2 Prelude Second Sunday of Advent December 9, 2018 Greeting/Announcements Welcome One Another The Call of Advent P: John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare people to receive Christ. C: John s message helps us prepare for the Lord s coming today. P: That message is never out of date or out of place. C: It is the same message we repeat today in the hope that all people will turn to Christ Who comes as the Savior of the world. P: John s message helps us. C: It makes us aware of our sins and leads us to the Christ child. P: In response to John s message and call to repentance, we confess, C: I am a sinner. I do repent. I need a Savior, and it is Jesus Christ Who is my Savior. P: Jesus comes to you as The Way, The Truth and The Life on the highway of your heart. C: A straight highway filled with righteousness, an elevated highway filled with praise, a level highway filled with humility, and a smooth highway filled with love. P: Help us, O Lord, to prepare for Your coming. Speak to our hearts and give us the desire. C: to turn away from our sins, and to return to You for pardon and peace, direction and purpose, comfort and hope. Amen. 3 P: The second candle of the Advent wreathe is called the Bethlehem candle. It signifies the preparation of all of history for the coming of the Messiah in a specific time and place. Opening Hymn Oh, Come, Oh, Come Emmanuel LBW #34 Confession of Sins P: It is time to wake from sleep. Salvation is near! Let us confess our sins to God. C: Faithful God, we confess that in thought, word and deed we have turned away from You. We have not eagerly expected Your coming. We have been slow to serve You and our neighbor. Restore us, Almighty God. Let Your face shine upon us and forgive us. P: Lay aside the works of the night; put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Strengthen your hearts, for God is with us to save us from our sins. Almighty God grants you forgiveness, keeps you in the grace of Christ Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit fills you with joy and hope. C: Amen. 6 First Reading Malachi 3:1-4 R: 3 I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come, says the LORD Almighty. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner s fire or a launderer s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years. 16 Announcements: TODAY Sunday School is at 10:15 a.m. There are classes from 2-3 year olds all the way through adults. We are using a curriculum called The Gospel Project- a Christ-centered chronological Bible study for all ages. Ages 2 to kindergarten meet in the kindergarten room, grades 1 to 6 meet in the Choir Room, grades 7 12 meet in the basement, and the Adult Bible Study meets in the Library. The second candle that is lit in the Advent wreathe, the Bethlehem candle, is a symbol of the preparations made to receive and to cradle the Christ child. May our hearts be ready to receive the Good News of Jesus our Savior. Our Sunday School Christmas Program will be NEXT Sunday, December 16 th at the 9:00 a.m. worship service. Refreshments will follow in the Fellowship Hall. We are looking for Sunday School Children to share their musical talents during the prelude for the Christmas program. There will be a sign-up sheet on the easel in the narthex for any child that would like to play a song. There will be a reception following the Sunday School Christmas Program (there is no Sunday School this day). Please sign up on the easel in the narthex to bring bars, cookies, etc. Thank you! 17 Meals, Mugs and Mittens.will be served on Christmas Day at 12:30 p.m. Our needs list will soon be posted on the easel in the narthex. You may sign up to offer particular food items, money offerings, and the opportunity to help with the meals. Not only is Christmas dinner served here at church, but meals are also taken to the county jail and to those who are shut-in. We need people to help. The December issue of The Daily Walk and October December copies of Christ In Our Home are on the small table at the rear of the sanctuary. Need Knows No Season..Money raised in Todd County through the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is used year round to provide temporary, emergency assistance to those in need. This often happens through our Todd County Chaplaincy. If you or your family are willing to help out this holiday season by being a bell-ringer, please call Fran Thomas ( ). 22 Hello, My name is Jason Fischer and I am the Camp Director at Lake Beauty Bible Camp. I wanted to take a moment to share with you that we are currently looking to hire to part time positions, and we are hoping that you would assist us in finding the right person by sharing the openings with your congregation. I have included some basic information on each position below, if you would like more information than what is provided below please let me know and I will be happy to get it to you. Part Time Housekeeper Hours a week (primarily weekdays) (Starting January 2019) -Assist in the weekly cleaning of camp to prepare for the next guests using the facility -Hours can be easily spread out to fit during school hours so interested person can easily drop off and pickup kids from school Part Time Cook 30 Hours a week (Schedule Varies) (Starting January 2019) -Will be responsible for preparing and serving meals for guests -Will be the lead/primary person for given meal preparing food for 10 to 300ppl -Previous food service experience required in a commercial kitchen These are just snippets of the position, if you would like a full job description please let me know. Sermon Outline: I. All the successful servants of the Lord had to learn. A. God promised that his descendants would be like the stars of heaven, but he had to wait. B. Most of the time our problems come from doing, not less, than God says. II. Another servant of the Lord that had to learn patience was. A.
