Sabbath Thinking You were loved because God loves, period. God loved you, and everyone, not because you believed in certain things, but because you were a mess, and lonely, and His or Her child. God loved you no matter how crazy you felt on the inside, no matter what a fake you were; always, even in your current condition, even before coffee. God loves you crazily, like I love you...like a slightly overweight auntie, who sees only your marvelousness and need. Anne Lamott Page 2 The Sabbath is a day for the sake of life. -Abraham Heschel The Bother of Forgiveness Matthew 18: 35 Is it possible to forgive too much? It is Peter who raises the question and there is nothing wrong in the asking. Can we have a proper relationship or a proper society when everyone knows, once they have done something wrong, they will always be forgiven? Where is the deterrence from acting badly? And what about me? Am I to simply become a doormat? Jesus comes at this from a different way, from the perspective of who we are and are becoming rather than what we may or may not be entitled to do. When I am injured I have the power of life or death either in my forgiveness or my condemnation. But do I have the power of judgement? That seems to rest with God if we look at the last sentence of the passage. The one who injures does not escape the consequences. Forgiveness and justice should not be confused. You may love your child, but you can still send him to the corner. The question is why do you send him there? What are your motivations? It is interesting how Jesus not only holds sinners accountable but victims also. The victim must remember that they also are forgiven sinners. When we remember in truth who we really are we are likely to show mercy. When we remember the fact that we remain loved by God we are driven toward love and forgiveness, leaving the rest to God. Remembering is how we grow into the Kingdom. Forgiving is merely an act which flows naturally from that remembrance. Fr. Jamie+ Firm Exodus 14:13 On their journey towards freedom. In a whirl of uncertainty. With extreme danger pursuing. Entangled by fear. Even tempted to give up the gift of liberation. Moses spoke two words to his fellow travelers, stand firm. Firm, not rigid. Rigid is inelastic. Rigid shatters. Rigid has a detailed memory, but no imagination. Firm is adaptable. Firm is an observation station. A watch post. Firm remembers God s previous works and knows God is making an odds-defying way forward. Firm sees the danger, the uncertainty, the temptation and the fear in HD and still whispers a defiant whisper, God is able! The Rt. Rev. Robert Wright Bishop of Atlanta

Parish News Page 6 Vestry Working to Find New Parish Administrator When the vestry met for its annual summer retreat three weeks ago it became clear that our church needed a new direction in administration.. They reviewed all of the different work and ministries in which we are engaged and all of the great people we have faithfully carrying out our mission. They looked at the places of real strength and the places which need more resources and more organization. It reflected on the huge changes in technology and the vast opportunities available to us to advance our work, create efficiencies, support creatively our people, and tell our story to the world beyond our beautiful place on Ridge Road. It became clear that a new direction was needed in administration, one that combined the traditional needs of a parish with a creative understanding of social media. The vestry invites the congregation to join it in this new direction and this search. For the time being, this will remain a part-time position. Briefly, this is who is being sought: 1. A self-starting individual with strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills & with IT knowledge and experience hours a week at $16/hour over three days a week. Times can be flexible. 3. Letter of Intent and Resume can be submitted to the office by . Vestry contact is Jennifer Savage Presiding Bishop Coming to Atlanta Our Presiding Bishop, The Most Reverend Michael Curry, will visit the Diocese of Atlanta, October in two events which are open to the public. He will be giving the Keynote Address at Candler School of Theology at 7PM Wednesday, October 11, 2017 on Racial Realities and the Beloved Community. There will also be a panel discussion including the Presiding Bishop ; Bishop Wright; and The Rev. Kim Jackson, Associate Rector at All Saints, Atlanta.. Registration is required through the diocesan website. He will also be at the Annual Vergers Guild Conference Friday, October 13, 2017 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Atlanta. 12 p.m. Holy Eucharist: Presiding Bishop Curry to celebrate and preach 2:45 p.m. Keynote Address.
Parish News Page 7 Vestry Planning for New Sign Design for New Sign Pending final county approval the new sign should be complete by mid to late October! Since our sign was destroyed in March the vestry has received compensation, received bids, and settled on the new design of natural stacked stone to complement our natural setting and increase our curb appeal. Even before the incident funds had been set aside to replace the aging sign. When completed it will be lit back and front by spotlights at night. The dimensions will be 8 feet high by 8 4 long. Location took more consideration. It could not be placed in the same location because of a set-back approximately in line with the telephone pole, parallel with the road. The best new site appears to be just south of the telephone pole, There it can be seen, heading south framed by the pole and the guide line, and heading north without being obscured by the telephone pole itself. (See the pictures and sketch below).
Mission Page 8 Mission to the Dominican Republic. and Chile Grady Lacy with Bishop Julio Holguin Grady Lacy s gift of language and heart for mission has led him six times down to the Dominican Republic with members of Christ Church, Valdosta in the diocese of Georgia. The mission has included a building project, arts and crafts, and working with children. It has always been open to other churches. If you are interested speak to Grady or contact the mission team directly: Julia Ariail (juliacarail@gmail.com or Julius Ariail (julious.ariail@gmail.com) In honor of the nearing retirement of Bishop Holguin the diocese is seeking to raise enough money to be self-sufficient. During the bishop s 26 years he has presided over the shrinking of external support from 86% to just 9%., churches increased from 23 to 71, Episcopal schools from 7 to 28, full time clergy from 15 to 43, and missions increased from 10 to 50. Heidi and Russ Smith and family have been missionaries in Chile for 31 years. They now work in the Araucania region in the south among the Mapuche indigenous people. The Smith are part of the Anglican missionary society called SAMS (South American Missionary Society). St. Clement s has been supporting their work for many years. Chile Araucania Contribution will be matched up to $250,000 and should be sent before Oct. 1 to PO Box , Tampa, Fla There is also a PayPal button at the diocesan website.
Doing Something Page 9 Presiding Bishop Curry: We cannot do everything. But we can pray, give, work. September 13, 2017 In the wake of natural disasters at home and abroad, and troubles such as the violence last month in Charlottesville, says Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, it is easy to grow weary, tempting to be downcast and give up. But while we cannot take care of everything, there are things we can do, and we are not alone in doing it, while Christ is with us. It may be that we cannot solve everything, and we cannot do everything. But we can do something, no matter what. We can pray. We can give. If possible, we can sign up and go to work. We can pray for those who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. The areas that have been affected as we pray include the Dioceses of Texas and West Texas, Western Louisiana and parts of Louisiana. We can pray for all of those who have been affected by Hurricane Irma. Episcopal dioceses that have been affected include the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Southeast Florida and Southwest Florida and Central Florida and Florida and parts of Georgia and Central Gulf Coast. We can pray for all of the peoples in these areas. We can pray. And we can give. We can give to the Hurricane Fund of Episcopal Relief & Development, for our donations actually help, they help in strategic ways. They really make a difference. If possible, we can sign up. We can sign up to volunteer through Episcopal Relief & Development, again, all on their web site, we can sign up, and when there are volunteer opportunities, we can know about those and possibly participate. We can t do everything, but we can do something. We can pray. We can give. We can go to work. The one thing we cannot do, is to quit. The truth is, we don t do it alone. Jesus in the Great Commission, said after calling His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, He ended that Commission by saying, And remember, I am with you always. In the Presiding Bishop s Office, there is a crucifix that has Jesus sacrificing His life for the cause of love on the cross. It s a different kind of crucifix. On this one, the artist has sculpted Jesus on the cross, dying as an act of love, but even more than that, holding someone, someone deeply in need, that this Jesus who sacrifices and gives His life, gives His life for us, and for all who are in need. That s the Lord we follow who has been raised from the dead. And we are not alone. Press Ctrl + Click: ERD
