So many things in our lives vie for our time and can pull our attention away from our friendship with Jesus. We need renewal, which is only possible through the Holy Spirit, the principal agent of the Church s evangelization. When the Apostles were gathered in the Upper Room after Jesus Ascension into Heaven, they prayed the first novena, which was for the coming of the Holy Spirit. A novena is a nine-day period of focused private or public prayer to implore special intentions with a sense of urgency and need. Beginning on Thursday, May 10th, until Sunday, May 20th, let us join together in the prayer below to ask the Holy Spirit to help us grow in our relationship with Christ, to recognize and repent from sin, and to be renewed in our life of prayer and faith. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus to people who no longer attend church and to heal their spiritual blindness, so that they may come to a realization of how much God loves them and of their need for God through the Catholic Church. O Holy Spirit Beloved of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen and console me. Tell me what I ought to do And command me to do it. I promise to submit to everything that You ask of me and to accept all that You allow to happen to me. Just show me what is Your will, Holy Spirit. Additionally, she is a Vocal Coach specializing in improving singers' pitch and tone to create a more polished and melodic sound. Topics to be covered at the workshop include proper breathing, posture, vowel pronunciation, consonant usage and other vocal techniques. EUCHARISTIC MIRACLES EXHIBIT Shrine Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe May 31 - June 3 All cantors, choir members and liturgical ministers are invited, as well as any member of the parish who has considered joining the music ministry at St. James. You do not need to read music to attend. Whether you're a seasoned vocalist who would just like a tuneup or a novice with a good ear, this workshop is for you! MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 9:00 am to NOON Throughout Christian history, our Lord has shown us that He is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. Interestingly, many Eucharistic miracles have occurred during times of weakened Faith. For instance, many Eucharistic miracles have taken place as a result of someone doubting the Real Presence. Most Eucharistic miracles involve incidences in which the Host has turned into human flesh and blood. Of course, we as Catholics believe that the consecrated Host is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord, under the appearances of bread and wine. Therefore, Jesus, through these miracles, merely manifests His Presence in a more tangible way. With an extensive assortment of photographs and historical descriptions, this Exhibit will present many of the principal Eucharistic Miracles that took place throughout the ages in various countries of the world and which have been recognized by the Church. Anointing of the Sick: Those who are seriously ill or have been sick for a long period of time should receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. 5 Answer: Disorder in society is the result of disorder in the family. St. Angela Merici, Foundress of the Ursulines What does it mean that parents are the primary educators in the Faith? Parents are primarily responsible for the health care of their children. This does NOT mean they drill and fix cavities in their teeth. It does not mean they make determinations about how to perform an appendectomy. It does not mean that they set up an ER in their living rooms and write prescriptions for antibiotics. It does mean that they choose when and where to take their children to those professionals who are well versed in human anatomy and health. Parents are primarily responsible for the secular education of their children. This does NOT mean that they teach their children AP Chemistry or Honors English. It does mean that they make the decision as to where it is best to send their children for their secular education. It does mean that they carefully choose when and where to take their children to those professionals who are well versed in secular education. Parents are primarily responsible for inculcating the Faith of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church into their children. That does NOT mean that they are qualified to hand on Biblical Studies, Sacramental Theology and Church History, nor the fullness of the Church s teaching on Moral Theology or any of the other theological studies. Rather, it does mean that they carefully choose when and where to take their children to those professionals who are well versed in all these theological studies. Of the three - health care, secular studies and theological studies - only one matters in eternity. What good does it do to gain the whole world - because one sacrifices all to get the "best" secular education at the "best" schools - if all the time and treasure sacrificed to attain to temporal gain results in the loss of one's soul because one has been far too oriented toward secular success and insufficiently oriented toward eternal salvation? Jesus gave specific teaching on this issue.* The same applies, in equal measure, to sports or any other temporal priorities that trump Faith, the single most important factor regarding parents stewardship of their children s eternal souls. Today's first passage from Acts and Jesus's words in the Gospel clearly point out that 2,000 years ago, the wolves were devouring souls, including wolves disguised as Catholics. What fool would think the situation has improved since then? In this troubled and terrible time, where in our own country, Christians are denounced as haters and the Bible is denounced as promoting hatred, we must be all the more diligent in knowing our Faith or we will be, like so many before, lost to the wolves. Now, more than ever, we better be fulfilling our duty and our responsibility to our precious children, of whose eternal souls we are the stewards, or not only will the coming cataclysm be more harsh in our time, but it will be eternally harsh in eternity. *Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father s glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct. Mt 16:24-27
