01. The Epistle of James (10/19/16) The James, who wrote the epistle that bears his name, is regarded by most evangelical scholars to be James the half-brother of the Lord Jesus Christ and not one of the three other James mentioned in the gospels. Jesus half-brother James was not one of His disciples during His earthly ministry. In fact, during His earthly ministry Jesus half-brothers, James, Joses, Simon, Judas and possibly His half-sisters (Matt. 13:55-56) thought He was mentally unstable for going around claiming to be the Messiah (John 7:5; Mark 3:31). So what brought James to saving faith? Well, we read in 1Corinthians 15:7 that Jesus appeared to James after His resurrection! This convinced him that Jesus truly was the Messiah and Savior of the world. No doubt James shared his new found faith with his brothers and sisters and we know that Judas got saved and possibly all of Jesus half-siblings. Judas (Jude) went on to write the epistle of Jude. James went on to become the lead pastor of the church in Jerusalem. 1

He was the one who made the deciding speech at the Jerusalem Council (Acts15:13 22), and Paul called James one of the pillars of the church (Galatians 2:9). We learn from early church history that James was such a man of prayer that his knees had large, thick calluses, making them look like the knees of a camel which earned him the nickname camel knees. We also learn that James was so hated by the Pharisees in Jerusalem for his unwavering testimony of Jesus Christ that they threw him off the pinnacle of the temple to kill him. However, when they discovered the fall didn t finish him off they beat him to death with clubs the year was A.D. 62. Tradition tells us that he died praying for and forgiving his attackers following the example of His Lord who, from the cross, prayed for and forgave those who crucified Him. The date of the epistle of James is uncertain one thing we can be certain of was that he wrote it sometime before A.D. 62! To whom did James address his epistle and what was his purpose in writing to them? We learn to whom James addressed his epistle from the first verse of chapter one To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad The word scattered means in the dispersion a term that was used to identify those Jews who were living outside the land of Israel. 2

But what s interesting is that the word carries with it the idea of scattering seed as when a farmer sows his fields for harvest. You remember from our study in the book of Acts that the Jewish believers were scattered throughout the Roman Empire in the first wave of persecution as recorded in Acts 8:1, 4. God used this persecution to sow the seeds of the gospel in many places and the result was a great harvest of souls for the Kingdom! However, the cost was great as many of these Jewish disciples were persecuted greatly for their faith usually and most vehemently by their fellow countrymen. This led to great discouragement which was one of the reasons James wrote to them to encourage them not to give up but to keep going forward in their faith and ministries. Unfortunately, many had given up and had gone back to the world and it s riches another theme that James addresses in chapters four and five of his letter. Author Warren Wiersbe contends that the main theme of James epistle is the issue of spiritual immaturity he says, and I quote: These Christians simply were not growing up. This gives us a hint as to the basic theme of this letter: the marks of maturity in the Christian life. James used the word perfect several times, a word that means mature, complete. By a perfect man (James 3:2) James did not mean a sinless man, but rather one who is mature, balanced grown-up. Spiritual maturity is one of the greatest needs in churches today. Too many churches are playpens for babies instead of workshops for adults. The members are not mature enough to eat the solid spiritual food that they need, so they have to be fed on milk (Heb. 5:11 14). Just look at the problems James dealt with and you can see that each of them is characteristic of little children: Impatience in difficulties (1:1 4); Talking but not living the truth (2:14); No control of the tongue (3:1); Fighting and coveting (4:1) and Collecting material toys (5:1) 3

It sounds like many churches and Christians today! Before we jump in let me mention one more thing. Martin Luther didn t believe the book of James was inspired by God and therefore didn t belong in the New Testament cannon of Scripture. In Luther s mind when James said that salvation was not by faith alone but by faith plus works (James 2:14-26) in his mind it proved that James was not writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. You see Luther and the other Reformers were fighting a fierce battle with the Roman Catholic Church over this very issue how a person is saved. The RCC taught it was by faith plus works (going to Mass, lighting candles, doing penance, keeping the sacraments etc.). Whereas the Reformers believed and taught that the Bible was crystal clear on the subject that salvation was by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone! But did James actually teach that salvation was a combination of faith coupled with works? No, (and we ll see this when we study chapter two) James didn t teach faith plus works for salvation he taught a faith that works as evidence of salvation. Or as Spurgeon put it, we are convinced that a man is saved by faith alone but we are also just as convinced that the kind of faith that saves a man in never really alone. 4

Chapter One James 1:1 (NKJV) 1 James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings. The term bondservant is really slave in the Greek James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Explain the concept of someone becoming a voluntary slave from the O.T.) To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad James is writing to Jewish Christians but they were still Christians which means this letter applies to all Christians Jew or Gentile. James 1:2-4 (NKJV) 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Right up front James presents the difference between spiritual and carnal believers it comes down to how they see trials and how they receive trials. At the core is how each sees this life carnal Christians look at life from earth s perspective and view their Christianity as a vehicle for God to bless them. 5

For these people God exists to make them happy and bless them with all kinds of material treasures as they are all about laying up for themselves treasures on earth. In contrast, mature, Spirit-filled Christians see life from an eternal perspective and view their Christian life as a way to lay up for themselves treasures in heaven by taking up their cross, denying themselves and living for the glory of God while on this earth. The first group tends to see trials as a satanic plot to destroy their earthly happiness and therefore believes that the devil needs to be rebuked when he attacks with trials so that they can once again enjoy God s blessings in this life. Whereas the second group sees trials as being necessary for growth and spiritual development a part of God s plan to better equip them for service to their Lord. James, who wants to replace carnality with maturity in the lives of his readers, is trying to get them to see their difficult circumstances as a positive thing a blessing from God to grow their faith and to better prepare them for the rigors of ministry. James 1:2-3 (NKJV) 2 My brethren, count it all joy [carnal Christians have a real problem with this] when you fall into [ come across, encounter ] various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. The word patience is the Greek word hupomone (sounds Italian!). This word comes from two words hupo (under) and meno (to stay, abide, remain). And so it s a word that means to remain under. 6

It pictures someone under a heavy load and choosing to stay there instead of trying to escape. One ancient Greek philosopher called hupomone the queen of virtues another described it as the frame of mind which endures. And so it s a word that means endurance or perseverance. What is James saying? He is saying that trials are beneficial in that they build endurance in us to finish the race (our ministry) God has called us to. Long distance runners have to train by subjecting themselves to the pain of running everyday so as to build up their endurance if they want to finish their race and win the prize. James is saying the same is true in our race for Jesus trials subject us to some pain but it s designed by the Holy Spirit (our Trainer ) to build our endurance so that we finish the race He has set before us. Let me mix metaphors for a moment when James talks about the testing of our faith he is likening trials to the fire that purifies ( tests, refines ) gold. It s the same thing Peter said 1 Peter 1:6-7 (NKJV) 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, [Explain] 7

James 1:2-4 (NKJV) 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. The word perfect is mature. This is one of the main reasons many Christians never really grow up they never exercise enough patience (they don t hang in there long enough) to give God time to work in their trials so as to build their faith. William MacDonald Sometimes when problems come we become desperate and use frantic means to cut short the trial. Without consulting the Lord as to His purposes in the matter By doing this, we actually may be thwarting God s program in our lives. And it is just possible that we may have to undergo a longer trial in the future before His particular purpose is realized in us. We should not short-circuit the development of endurance in our lives. By cooperating with God we will become mature, well-rounded Christians, lacking in none of the graces of the Spirit. Romans 5:3-4 (NLT) 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. James 1:5 (NKJV) 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Let me stop here and say this intelligence is the accumulation of information wisdom is the proper application of information. 8

A person can have a lot of information in their brain but still be a fool if they don t apply it properly. For example, many scientists are brilliant men and women who know a lot about the universe and about nature and animals here on earth but if that knowledge doesn t point them to God then, as God sees them, they are fools regardless of how smart they are. Romans 1:18-23 (NKJV) 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and fourfooted animals and creeping things. Now when it comes to wisdom in the Christian life it starts with knowing the Word of God. But that knowledge doesn t automatically equal wisdom (the proper application of God s Word in a given situation). Therefore, we need to ask God, through His Holy Spirit, to give us grace and understanding to properly apply what we learn from His Word into our lives this is divine wisdom! I believe that all wisdom from God starts in our hearts with the fear of the Lord. Solomon had a lot to say about this in the book of Proverbs 9

Proverbs 1:7 (NKJV) 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 2:1-12 (NKJV) 1 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; 8 He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, Equity and every good path. 10 When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 11 Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, One author said, The Bible does not give specific answers to the innumerable problems that arise in life. It does not solve problems in so many words, but God s word does give us general principles. We must apply these principles to problems as they arise day by day. That is why we need wisdom. Spiritual wisdom is the practical application of our Lord s teachings to everyday situations. Now, the wisdom that James is referring to is, no doubt, wisdom from God in knowing what to do or how to act in the various trials we face in life. Many times when we find ourselves going through a difficult trial (as with our job) and we need wisdom from God to know if He is using it to move us on or to toughen us up. James is telling us that, asking God for this kind of wisdom, the wisdom to do His will in a given situation so that we can better glorify Him with our lives will never bring the reproach (the scolding) of God upon us no matter how often we ask for it. Proverbs 3:5-7 (NLT) 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. 7 Don t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. 10

God delights in us asking for this kind of wisdom and will gladly give it to us generously James 1:5-6 (NKJV) 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. What God does get upset about is when we ask for His wisdom in a given situation but then doubt He s really going to give it to us. Why would a Christian doubt God would give them the wisdom they ask Him for? Many doubt because, they reason, they are unworthy of receiving anything from Him (true but irrelevant). Others believe He s so busy running the universe that He really doesn t have time to get involved in their puny lives. And still others don t even ask for wisdom at all because they re too busy being angry with God for allowing the trial in their life in the first place! A person that doubts, James says, is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. This kind of person is up and down in their faith one minute they re trusting God to help them, and the next they re all anxious and doubting whether He will help them which causes them to grab the situation back from Him in an effort to work things out on their own. Alright Lord, I ve given You twenty minutes to show me what to do here looks like I m going to have to work it out on my own! 11

This is the very issue James is dealing with immaturity! Paul put it this way Ephesians 4:14 (NKJV) 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, James 1:7-8 (NKJV) 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. The term double-minded literally means two-souled. One writer put it this way, The man of two souls, who has one for the earth, and another for heaven: who wishes to secure both worlds; he will not give up earth, and he is loath to let heaven go. That in and of itself is not a wise way to live trying to serve two masters. Christian maturity is all about being single-souled. It s all about making a full commitment to God and His will for your life God cannot bless anything less. And you will only know instability and anxiety in your Christian life until you stop being double minded in your walk with Him. 12
