1 Identifying False Part 1 There exist an element among brethren that insist that anyone teaching a false doctrine must be publicly labeled as a false teacher. They also insist that any preacher that will not label a person that teaches a false doctrine as a false teacher is weak, and they too must be labeled. Notice the reasoning by some of these brethren, and the teaching of scripture Teachers- 2 Pet. 2:1, Brethren- 2 Cor. 11:26, Witnesses- Mt. 15:19, Prophets- 1 Jn. 4:1 Apostles- 2 Cor. 11:13 Christs- Mt. 24:24

2 Arguments Made by Some we must mark those who teach what is false whether they intend to deceive or not. We are not saying it is required to break fellowship at the drop-of-a-hat. Note the party spirit in these statements- we it is nonsense and a play on words to refuse to acknowledge and name one as being a false teacher who teaches false doctrine with a good heart. One might ask, What difference does it make as long as the false doctrine is exposed? The sting is taken out of the identity of one who is marked as such. It is a softening toward the one who needs to be noted and avoided! Note the desire to make a show of others. Both those teaching falsely, and those who will not impugn the character of such

3 Arguments Made If we use the limited definition of "false teacher" as defined by (the editor), we are forced into an impossible position of having to be "heart judgers." If error is being taught, according to him (the editor) we cannot call that teacher a "false teacher" unless he "willfully, knowingly, consciously and intentionally" does so There is not a man on earth today who can prove that any teacher of error does so "willfully, knowingly, consciously an intentionally"! Note that the scriptures identify a false one, as we will see It should be understood that every false teacher is sincere about what they are teaching regardless of why they are teaching their false understanding of the scriptures. Presumptuous statement. His brother in the above statement said no man on earth can know the heart of one, and this brother states he can. I wonder if they are still united?

4 What These Have Said If teaching by an individual is contrary to God s word, the teacher of that doctrine is a false teacher, and must be labeled a false teacher. Note: This position includes the one with a doctrinal error, and a preacher that will not label that one a false teacher. Answer: Aquila and Priscilla were evidently unaware of this- Acts 18:24-26 Another Problem- Who is responsible for determining what topics will be considered as those with which all must agree, and who s point of view must be followed?- 1 Cor. 2:12-13 There is no other way other than by their teaching that a false teacher can be identified. Answer: If false teachers can be identified (and they are in scripture), they can be recognized. Mt. 7:15-20 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. (16) You will recognize them by their fruits If false teachers cannot be recognized we have an impossible command and conclusion by Jesus; Beware of false prophets - vs. 15, you will recognize them - vs. 20

5 A Point to Consider Jesus taught caution on labeling others- Mt. 5:21-22 Vs. 21 The murderer is in danger of judgment, God s judgment, Ex. 20:13 But Vs. 22a Anger without cause- danger of judgment (judgment of peers as not being prudent. Spoiled reputation)- Prov. 29:22-23 Anger- orgizo, to grow in anger, unchecked anger Vs. 22b Call a brother Raca, in danger of the council (Sanhedrin), judgment of authorities, being slanderous Raca- rhaka, empty, senseless- Prov. 10:18 Vs. 22c Call a brother a fool is in judgment of hell, calling a brother made in God s image godless moron - Jas. 3:8-10 Fool- mo ros, impious, godless- not: aphron- without reason (1 Cor. 15:36), or anoetos- unwise (Gal. 3:1) All will account for their words- Mt. 12:36-37

6 2Pet. 2:1 even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, 2Pet. 2:2 follow their pernicious ways; 2Pet. 2:3 they with feigned words 2Pet. 2:10 walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise authority. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of majestys. 2Pet. 2:12 But these, as natural brute beasts, 2Pet. 2:13 riot in the day time.sporting themselves 2Pet. 2:14 beguiling unstable souls: 2Pe 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, 2Pet. 2:19 While they promise them liberty, Identifiers of the False Jude 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. Jude 10 as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Jude 16 These are murmurers, complainers, their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. Jude 19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

9 Points to Consider on This Lesson Peter said; 2 Peter 2:1 But false prophets were also among the people, as also false teachers will be among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, and denying the Master who has bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. LITV This is a warning that is given to us, just as was Mt. 24 to those when Jesus gave them signs for escaping the destruction of Jerusalem- Note Heb. 10:25 In the same way the identifiers of false teachers are given for our protection. They can be identified and known by their actions

16 What is Being Done Some will run the names of their brothers through the mud in the name of Ezk. 3:17-21 and 33:7-9 But Note: The text in Ezekiel instructs the watchman to warn the sinner. Nowhere in this context is public marking mentioned, or the defamation of character. Note the following principle in connection with false teachers: Even the angels will not;, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord., and note Jude 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

17 What to do with the False Ones? Jude Keep (watch, guard) ourselves Mark and avoid- Rom. 16:17-18 Withdraw from the unruly- 1 Tim. 6:3-5 Cut their opportunity off, by cutting them off- 2 Cor. 11:12-15, Gal. 5:12 Reject the heretic- Titus 3:10-11 What is to be done with the unlearned? Jude 21 Keep (watch, guard) ourselves Vs. 22- Have mercy on those doubting Vs. 23a- Save others from hell (Rom. 11:14) Vs. 23b- Show mercy causing fright (phobos), hating their deeds

18 Application There is no doubt that there is danger in false teaching- Acts 20:27-32 There is no doubt that ample warning has been given- 2 Tim. 3:1-7 But we are never given license to label men for the sake of name calling- Mt. 5:21-22 If one is a false teacher or brother he must be marked as such, but the marking is based upon proven indicators- Titus 3:10, Rom. 16:17-18 If one teaches falsely, he is to be taught. When instruction fails he is to be withdrawn from, but with the intent of restoring- 2 Ths. 3:14-15 We must use our words with caution as the scriptures teach
