1 The Link St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church July/August 2017 From the Pastor To the Disciples at St. Paul's, Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ! As we continue to move into another phase of transition, we owe a vote of thanks to Pr. Paul Shoop for his leadership and pastoral care over the past year. Pastor Shoop ends his transitional role (June 30) and on June 12th, at a regularly scheduled Council meeting, a contract was signed for a three month period naming me as your Transitional Pastor (as of July 1). I look forward to serving with you and, hopefully, calling a pastor by the end of my contract. This all depends on the work of the Holy Spirit, the hard work of the Call Committee and the gifts of the candidate (in relationship to the needs/msp of the congregation). We will see where the Spirit leads! We have much to give thanks for: your strength and continued ministries in light of the transition; the faithful work of your Call Committee; the naming of a candidate and setting a date for the interview; and of course, the CELEBRATION OF A 150 YEARS OF MINISTRY, culminating in a celebrative Service of Holy Communion and dinner following at the Woodcliff on Sunday, July 30! As summer begins, may we find time for relaxation and refreshment! May we be sure to worship weekly (either at home or away! May we serve faithfully in the ministries of St. Paul's! May we pray for the guidance of the Spirit as the Call process starts to move forward. May we pray for God's presence to guide each of us in the gifts we are called to share in ministry. I look forward to our time together. I will be away fro July 1-14, but in contact with Michelle as needed. Sunday pastoral supply is set and during my time away, Pr. Jonathan Deibler will cover pastoral emergencies (call Michelle if a need arises). Again, thank you Pr. Shoop and blessings to each of you as we move forward in ministry, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ! Peace, Pr. Frank Hanrahan Pr. Frank C. Hanrahan, Transitional Pastor Dean, Genesee Finger Lakes Conference Page 1

You may place it in the offering plate or hand it to an usher as you come forward to receive the sacrament. Thank you. Our Vision: To spread the Word, build a strong community, and make the world a better place. June Council Meeting Notes: The Call Committee has received the name of a pastoral candidate! The next step in the process is her interview with the committee. Further information will be very limited until an official recommendation is made. We'll again be doing the "God's Work, Our Hands" program at our annual church picnic. This year, Loop Ministries will receive more assistance from the state, allowing us to fill even more bags. The Finance Committee has made strides in implementing its strategy to secure available funds from dedicated accounts into low-risk, diversified investments. A significant portion has already been placed. Mutual Ministry has been working diligently on revising and updating St. Paul's Wedding Guide. Church Council unanimously approved it as presented. Council's next meeting will be August 7 th at 6:45 pm. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Thank you for the opportunity to journey with you during your time of transition. May God bless you into your future of ministry. Also, Joan and I both thank you for the gifts you gave us as we conclude our time with you. We appreciate your generosity and thoughtfulness. 5 The Call Process Explained by your Call Committee Now that we have been given the name of a candidate to consider for the position of Pastor, perhaps you are wondering what happens next. These are the next steps: 1. We will arrange an interview with the candidate. 2. We will go hear the candidate preach. 3. We will meet with the candidate again. 4. The call committee will pray and reflect on the candidate s suitability as Pastor of St. Paul s. 5. If the candidate is not deemed to be a good match for our congregation, we will report to the Council that the Call Committee recommends that we not call the candidate. The Call Committee, after the Council's acceptance of their recommendation, will report the result and reasons (for not calling) to the Synod. 6. If we are recommending the candidate, we will share the reasons for that recommendation with the Church Council. 7. The church council will meet with prospective new Pastor and they will decide if they agree with the recommendation. 8. If council is in agreement, the Candidate is invited to meet the congregation on a Saturday. 9. The candidate will preside and preach at St. Paul's the day following the Saturday Meet and Greet. 10. Following the Service the congregation will vote whether or not to Call the candidate. Lutheran Youth Organization News Thank you to everyone who worked on our Father s Day Root Beer Floats! It was such a hot day that the ice cream was melting as fast as we were scooping some of the floats were more like unblended root beer-flavored milk shakes! It was fun, anyway. We also provided a small gift to each of our Fathers and other adult men of the congregation. If you did not get your Man of God inspirational bookmark and pen set, please let me know and we ll be sure you get one. The LYO appreciates all you do!!!! Congratulations to Devin Rosenbauer, who won the BBQ gift basket donated by a generous congregation member. Woo- Hoo!! We are STILL determined to find a more effective means of communications other than s (which the school-age set doesn t seem to use) but one that is secure/private and easy enough for the parent-set to use. Any and all techie suggestions are welcome. We wish our Seniors well as they graduate and move on to the next phase of their lives. We pray that you will take your God-given light with you and share it wherever you can! Keep it lit by finding other like-minded friends, joining a college campus ministry, or staying in The Word through your bible or a bible study group. May God Bless all of you on your travels this summer! Alisa Piccirilli Page 5

11 Upstate NY Synod Assembly for 2017 Building Bridges Two are better than one..for if they fall, one will lift up the other. Thank you for letting me be one of your representatives to Assembly. I do enjoy going!! The music was amazing, this year we learned songs from all over the world, first in the language of the land, then English. The music and worship leadership was provided by the Glocal Musician-Educators of the ELCA. This group was formed by the Mission Formation Team. Through its intentional diversityincluding representatives from may countries, denominations, and several cultures- the group embodies ways to stand in mutual solidarity while amplifying marginalized voices. Chris has a copy of the all the music from the Assembly. Maybe we can learn some new songs. Fellowship- If you have never had the opportunity to join with a large group in singing to Our Lord, you are missing out on something. My first time was a WOW moment to hear all these voices singing praise to the Lord. It is also great to see friends from the past and make new ones. This year was able to give lots of hugs and find out what has been going on in the past year. Workshops-this year I was able to only make one. Called forward Together In Christ: What does this Mean? This is a church-wide initiative that is being implemented by Presiding Bishop Eaton, The conference of Bishops and the ELCA Church-wide Council. Five specific goals that are important for the ELCA to go forward into the future. What are these goals? What are the prioritized? How can local congregations align their own strategic goals to reflect the values in the Called Forward Together in Christ (CFTC) Some to the questions that were addressed at the workshop. Spoiler alert!! Leadership development, faith formation, and welcoming communities are some of the answers! Clarence Smith, ELCA Council Representative to the UNYS was a speaker on Saturday and gave the workshop later in the day. I have printed out a copy of the resource from ELCA.org to share with anyone who would like to read more. *Speakers-Keynote speaker Thursday evening was Dr. Joy Philip of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary in Ontario, Canada. She addressed the assembly on accompaniment. Accompaniment is a model of mission that provides support, partnership, solidarity, and relational engagement. It requires people to be present, listen, and participate. Dr. Philip urged the assembly to build living bridges of human relationship, much like the people of India have cultivated vines and roots to build living bridges over rivers and waterfalls. They take move than a lifetime to build, but they create a legacy for generations to come. *Friday morning keynote address was given by Rev. Dr. Stephen Bouman, Executive Director of the Domestic Mission Unit of the ELCA. We are provoked to engage this world, to show up, to listen. Rev. Bouman shared several stories of his experiences of how we can be engaged in building bridges and living into the model of accompaniment that Dr. Joy Philip shared Thursday evening. Then he continued sharing by going to scripture, citing Matthew 15, where Jesus returns to the boat after mourning for his cousin John. Jesus invites us out of the boat, saying Come. Who do we invite out of the boat? In summary Rev. Bouman tells us what it means to accompany another and build living bridges in his final remarks: The church was the place where people gathered to listen, to talk to each other, to work towards peace and mutual love and understanding of each others humility..now let's get out of the boat because the world needs to see something. Page 11

12 The business of the Synod was also taken care of. Several resolutions, reports, committees, and awards and recognition's was spread between the two half days and one full day. I also enjoyed visiting several rooms that had available to rest, read or find a quiet moment. The prayer room, Luther's room, the puzzle room and the kids room. The kids made something for the Bishop this year, which they do every year. This year the Bishop had a gift for them, a book. They were excited and the Bishop took time to open every one for all the kids. Service Friday evening, was amazing!! Yes, amazing is one of my favorite words. I love joining with my brothers and sisters, sharing the Lord's word, singing for Our Lord, and taking of the bread and wine. There is nothing better that we can do. Praise the Lord!!! There is so much more that can be shared. You can visit the website of the upstate NY Synod and the material is still there to read. Thank you again for letting me be your representative. There are copies of The Daily Call which I used information about the keynote speakers. In closing would like to say something about the four G's. This comes from the Bishop's report. Those four G's are as follows: Grounded in Christ Jesus Growing in Our Witness Giving from our Bounty Graced for the World. One leads into the other and creates a progression of steps to take as we grow into not only our faith but also the ability to proclaim it, share it, witness it to others and the world. This plan and process in still in infancy stages. Watch for continued information on this, a logo that will focus attention on it and new work beginning that will ground us in this Jesus as we look to share the Good News with the world. Bishop John S. Macholz God's Blessings, Robin Lancaster To the Members of St. Paul s Thank you for the gift cards and thank you note that you shared with me as I worked with Pastor Paul teaching the Confirmation Class this past year. I appreciate your kindness. Joan Shoop * * * Dear St. Paul s Lutheran Church, We received 19 hand knitted hats yesterday and we are so grateful to your knitters for their wonderful labor of love. Thank you for continuing to lift up our seafarers in such a practival way: making sure their heads are as warm as their hearts when they find out someone from Pittsford is praying for them. God bless your unconditional love in Jesus name. Peace, Pastor Marsh Drege Executive Director Seafarers International House * * * To All at St. Paul s, Thank you so much for the two care packages this year at college. I really appreciate the support and tasty snacks. My faith at Notre Dame has strengthened and I am hoping this trend continues. I hope to get confirmed in the fall! Thank you again for your generosity. Sincerely, Christopher Wittig Page 12
