Great Truths from the Epistles Lesson #10 Paul s Closing Remarks in Romans Study Notes For Sunday, July 8, 2018 Read Romans 15:14 16:27 An Explanation of Romans 15:14 16:27 Paul Rejoiced About the Work Christ Had Done Through Him Romans 15:14 My brethren, I am certain that you are full of goodness, filled with knowledge and are able to teach one another But I have boldly written to you about things I wanted remind you about. God has, after all, granted me His special favor of making me a servant of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles. I serve by preaching the Gospel of God so that the Gentiles who believe may be offered up to God and be accepted by Him because they have been set apart by the Holy Spirit. 17 My work among the Gentiles will give me a reason to joyfully boast of God in Jesus Christ Of course, there are things Christ hasn t done through me to bring about the obedience to the Gentiles and I will not boast of those things (since I had nothing to do with it). I will only say what He has accomplished through the words and deeds He has given me, and the powerful signs and wondrous miracles that have been done through the Holy Spirit. These things Christ has done through me have allowed me to fulfill my work in the Gospel of Christ from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum [a region that was near Italy where the city of Rome was]. 20 I have worked hard at preaching the Gospel in places where they had not yet called on the name of Christ. I didn t want to just build on the foundation someone else had laid. 21 Like the Scripture says, Those who had never been told about Him before will see, and those who had never heard before will understand (Isaiah 52:15). Paul Wanted to Visit the Brethren in Rome 22 My other preaching journeys have kept me from being able to come to you there at Rome Since I have no more places that I need to go to in that region, and since I have really wanted to come visit you all these years, I plan when I go on my journey to Spain to come to you. Once I have come and visited with you for a while, then I hope you will be able to help me to go on in my journey.

Paul First Had to Go to Jerusalem 25 Right now, however, I am headed to Jerusalem to serve the saints. 26 The churches of Macedonia and Achaia have been very pleased to commit themselves to a contribution for the poor saints that are at Jerusalem. 27 It pleased these brethren very much because they feel like they are debtors to the Jerusalem saints. The Gentiles Christians are debtors because they have been allowed to take a part and share in the spiritual blessings that were promised to the Jews. And since they share their spiritual blessings, it is appropriate for the Gentile Christians to share their physical blessings (their money) with the Jewish Christians. 28 Once I have accomplished this work in Jerusalem and sealed this fruit to them [made certain that it has been accomplished], I will come to you on my way to Spain. 29 Then I will know that I can come with the fullness of Christ s blessing. 30 Brethren, I do plead with you by the Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, that you pray hard (along with me) to God in my behalf Pray that I will be rescued from those in Judea who do not believe in Christ. Pray also that the financial help we are taking down there will be well received by the saints. That way I can come to you joyfully by the will of God and can have a refreshing rest with you. 33 Now the God of peace be with all of you. Amen. Paul Sends His Personal Greetings to the Christians at Rome 16:1-2 Please know that our sister Phoebe who has arrived has my approval. She is a servant of the church at Cenchrea. Receive her in the Lord in a way that is appropriate of the saints and help her in whatever ways she needs you, for we think highly of her. This woman has helped many people, including me. 3-4 Give my regards to Prisca and Aquila, my fellow-workers in Christ Jesus, who have risked their own lives for mine. I m not the only one who gives thanks for this couple all the churches of the Gentiles do. 5 Also greet the congregation that meets in Prisca and Aquila s house. Greet Epaenetus, someone I so dearly love, who was the first person converted to Christ when I preached in Achaia. 6 Send my greetings to Mary who has worked hard for us. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen and my fellow-prisoners who are well thought of among the apostles. They were in Christ even before I was. 8 Send my greetings to Ampliatus, who I dearly love in the Lord. 9 Say hello to Urbanus, our helper in Christ and Stachys who I love dearly. 10 Greet Apelles, who is accepted and approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to Aristobulus. 11 Send greetings to Herodian, my kinsman. Greet those who belong to Narcissus who are in the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, workers in the Lord. 13 Say hello to Rufus, chosen in the Lord, along with his mother and mine. 14 Send greetings to Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the brethren with them. 15 Give my regards to Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints that are with them.

16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ send greetings to you. Words of Warning 17 But brethren, I admonish you to carefully watch all those who cause the church to be divided and cause people to fall contrary to the teaching you have learned, and keep away from them. 18 Such people are not true servants of Jesus Christ, but are servants of their own belly. By their smooth words and flattery they deceive people that don t realize what they are up to. 19 Your obedience to God has become well known and that causes me to rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise about what is good and pure in regard to what is evil. 20 And by this the God of peace will be able to quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of God be with you all. Final Words 21 Timothy, who is working with me, sends his greeting to you, and so does Luke, Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsman. 22 I, Tertius, who Paul is dictating this letter to, greets you in the Lord. 23 Gaius, who hosts me as well as the whole church sends greetings to you. Erastus, the city manager greets you and Quartus, a brother Now to Him who is able to give you stability from my Gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ. 25 (continued) -26 There has been a mystery which has been kept secret since the beginning of the world which has now been revealed. The prophets wrote of this mystery of what God commanded would come to pass that one day Gentiles would be allowed to be obedient in faith. 27 To God, who alone is wise, be the glory forever through Jesus Christ. Amen. LOOKING AT OUR LESSON The Brethren at Rome Understood and Obeyed God s Word Paul said that he knew that they were trying to be good and live right. He also said they knew a lot about God s Word. Because they knew God s Word so well and were trying to obey it, Paul said they would be able to help teach God s Word to each other. To teach the Bible we have to understand it and live by it. We should be thankful that God gives us Bible class teachers to help us learn more about His Word. It would be a very nice thing for you to tell them thank you for what they do. Paul Told the Brethren at Rome that He Planned to Come Visit Them All the country they lived in was called Rome or the Roman Empire, but the most important city in the Roman Empire was also called Rome. Paul said that he wanted to go there and preach the Gospel.

Paul was just about to leave for Jerusalem. Some of the churches where he had preached were sending money to the needy Christians at Jerusalem. The Jewish brethren there were very poor and having a hard time. After Paul had finished his trip to Jerusalem, he planned to go all the way to Spain, but on his way to Spain he would stop for awhile in Rome. We know from Acts that when Paul went to Jerusalem to minister to the saints, he was arrested and sent to Caesarea. Finally he was sent under arrest to Rome and remained a prisoner about two more years. After that he was released and may have gone on to Spain at some point. Paul Sends His Letter to Rome It is thought that Paul sent his letter to the church at Rome through the hands of a Christian woman named Phoebe. Paul says in Romans that he and many others thought very highly of Phoebe because of all the ways she had helped the cause of Christ. He tells the brethren at Rome to help her. Greet My Fellow Christians In most versions of the Bible it talks about Paul saying to greet people. What does greet mean? That is very much like when we say to tell someone hello for us. Paul knew several of the Christians at Rome because he had met them at other times on his journeys. Two of the people Paul mentions were the husband and wife, Aquila and Priscilla (Prisca) that had been good friends to Paul and had helped him. Now they lived in Rome and Paul sent them greetings. Several of the people mentioned were good workers for the Lord, and Paul admired them very much. It is interesting to think about that even though Paul had never been to the city of Rome, he still knew a lot of Christians there. When you are a member of Christ s church, you are part of a big family. Paul told the brethren at Rome that all the churches of Christ sent their greetings to them. Romans 16:16 The churches of Christ greet you is the reason we refer to our congregation as the church of Christ. Beware of Have you ever seen a sign that says Beware of the Dog?? If people have a dog that bites, they might put that up on a fence to warn others. Paul says that Christians have to beware of those who might claim to be Christians, but were causing trouble in the church. Sometimes people cause trouble because they teach things that aren t true. Sometimes people cause trouble because they don t know how to get along with others. As Christians we must do only what the Bible says. Paul tells us to try and be wise about good things and stay away from evil things. When we act right, God can crush the Devil s influence. When we obey God, He can help us stand strong.

Note to Teachers: Older classes might want to spend some time talking about the dangers of false teachers. Paul said these cause divisions because they teach things different from what God had revealed. He said we should turn away from these. Bible Quiz 1. What two things did Paul believe the Roman brethren were filled with? (Rom. 15:14) What did he say they were able to do? (Rom. 15:14) 2. Paul said that he would come to see the brethren at Rome when he was on his way to what place? (Rom. 15:24) 3. What had Macedonia and Achaia done? (Rom. 15:25-26) 4. What did Paul ask the Christians at Rome to do for Him? (Rom. 15:30) 5. What woman did Paul say he approved of? (Rom. 16:1) 6. What husband and wife did Paul send greetings to at Rome that he had known before? (Rom. 16:16) 7. Greet one another with the holy kiss. The of greet you. (Rom. 16:16) 8. If someone causes a division in the church by teaching false doctrines, what should we do about them? (Rom. 16:17) 9. Some don t serve Jesus, but instead they serve their own. (Rom. 16:18) 10. Be in what is good and concerning evil. (Rom. 16:19).
