SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 13, 2018 AS WE GATHER Good news versus fake news. What is the difference? Whether from false teachers, Internet bloggers, social media users, misguided co-workers and fellow students, or even the news media itself, our experience of daily life can be overwhelmed by fake news: information that is misleading, unhelpful, or simply not true. We must be especially aware of this in matters concerning Jesus, faith, and forgiveness. God has testified this Good News concerning His Son, Jesus: Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:12). In the face of so much fake news, take heart! Jesus His incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and ascension is God s final word of Good News for all people. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC THE WELCOME THE RITE OF FRIENDSHIP OPENING HYMN Dearest Jesus, We are Here LSB 592 (verses1, 5) Public domain Dearest Jesus, we are here, Gladly Your command obeying; With this child we now draw near In response to Your own saying That to You it shall be given As a child and heir of heaven. Now into Your heart we pour Prayers that from our hearts proceeded. Our petitions heav nward soar; May our hearts desires be heeded! Write the name we now have given; Write it in the book of heaven! 3
HOLY BAPTISM p. 268 SERVICE OF THE WORD INTROIT Psalm 27:1a, 4 5, 10, 14; antiphon: v. 7 P: Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; C: be gracious to me and answer me! P: The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? C: One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after P: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, C: to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. P: For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; C: he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. P: For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in. C: Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; C: be gracious to me and answer me! KYRIE P: O Lord, who guided Your apostles in selecting a faithful witness to Your resurrection, C: have mercy on us. P: O Christ, who is the only-begotten Son of God and Good News for all people, C: have mercy on us. P: O Lord, who prayed for Your people that we may be one and experience the fullness of Your joy, C: have mercy on us, and grant us Your peace. Amen. SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. God who testifies Good News concerning Your Son, Jesus, grant in a world filled with misleading voices and much that is false, that Your people hear and attend to the sound 4
of Your voice; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns in communion and love with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. FIRST READING Acts 1: Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. [a] 15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong [b] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 For it is written in the Book of Psalms, May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it ; and Let another take his office. 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection. 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 5
GRADUAL ALL: Christ has risen from the dead. [God the Father] has crowned Him with glory and honor, He has given Him dominion over the works of His hands; He has put all things under His feet. EPISTLE 1 John 5: If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand VERSE Romans 6:9; John 14:18 ALL: Alleluia. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. Alleluia. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL John 17:11b 19 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventeenth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture 6
might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Sit HYMN OF THE DAY Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling LSB 650 Holy Spirit, ever dwelling In the holiest realms of light; Holy Spirit, ever brooding O er a world of gloom and night; Holy Spirit, ever raising Those of earth to thrones on high; Living, life-imparting Spirit, You we praise and magnify. 2 Holy Spirit, ever living As the Church s very life; Holy Spirit, ever striving Through us in a ceaseless strife; Holy Spirit, ever forming In the Church the mind of Christ: You we praise with endless worship For Your gifts and fruits unpriced. 3 Holy Spirit, ever working Through the Church s ministry; Quick ning, strength ning, and absolving, Setting captive sinners free; Holy Spirit, ever binding Age to age and soul to soul In communion never ending, You we worship and extol. 8 SERMON OFFERING I was There to Hear Your Borning Cry RH39 (verses 1,2,4) I was there to hear your borning cry, I ll be there when you are old I rejoiced the day you were baptized to see your life unfold I was there when you were but a child with a faith to suit you well; In a blaze of light you wandered off to find where demons dwell When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. If you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one, I ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun I was there to hear your borning cry I ll be there when you are old I rejoiced the day you were baptized to see our life unfold RITE OF CONFIRMATION LSB 272 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray together in Christ Jesus for all people according to their needs. O God, restore us to oneness among our family of believers even as You have restored us to oneness with You through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, who is Your Good News for all people. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: O God, grant to all servants of Your Word attentive hearts to listen to Your voice as they speak Your Word among people who do not yet know how much You love them. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: O God, in Holy Baptism You began Your good work in our catechumens, and You have blessed their instruction and training in Your Word. We implore You to pour out Your Holy Spirit on their hearts and minds so that they will truly love and revere You, confess the faith with joy and boldness, endeavor to live according to your commandments, and praise and glorify You as their faithful God and Lord, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 8
P: O God, be with all people who suffer affliction of body, mind, or spirit, [especially...]. Grant that all people look to You and experience healing and wholeness according to Your good and gracious will. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: O God, You have set the feast before us in the Holy Supper of Your Son s body and blood. Grant that all who come and dine this day both here and throughout the world do so trusting Jesus words that His body is given and His blood is shed for the forgiveness of our sins. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: O God, in Your beloved presence the saints rest from their labors awaiting the day of the resurrection of all flesh. Bring us together with all Your saints into the fullness of Your reign on the day that Jesus comes again. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: All glory, honor, power, and might be unto You, dear Father, who with Your Son, Jesus Christ, are living and reigning in communion and love with the Holy Spirit, ever one God, now and ever unto the ages of ages. C: Amen. SILENT PRAYERS The congregation is encouraged to take a few moments to pray silently for anything that weighs heavily on our hearts. We are also encouraged to pray for those in our lives who do not know Christ that the Holy Spirit may work powerfully to bring them to saving faith. SACRAMENT We believe, teach and confess that in the Lord s Supper, Christ comes to us and his body and blood are really present to forgive our sins and assure us of everlasting life and salvation. We, as baptized believers, prepare for Communion by examining ourselves, repenting of our sins, anticipating our Lord s forgiveness and drawing on Christ s power in the Sacrament to help us live an amended life for Christ. To those who share this confession with us, we invite you to join us as we welcome you to the Lord s Table. PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. 9 [Colossians 3:1]
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136] C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who in this world filled with fake news is Himself Your Good News for all people. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS p. 208 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, who is Your Good News for all people, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the 10
faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. LORD'S PRAYER p. 209 C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI p. 209 P C The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen. AGNUS DEI p

Use this seed of the resurrection to fill us with Your Good News that we share it with others and be made ready together to experience the fullness of eternal life on the day when Jesus comes again; for He lives and reigns in communion and love with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. BENEDICAMUS P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 13

Concordia Lutheran Church s Covenant with One Another How Do We Love One Another at Concordia Lutheran Church? 1. We will behave in a spirit of forgiveness always speaking well of others with love and kindness knowing that God created every human being in His image and we will always show respect for others despite our mutual failures, acknowledging shortfalls and willing to forget prior harms. 2. We will promote and practice honest conversations following the 8 th Commandment to speak well of each other, avoiding gossip by redirecting people to the appropriate person and avoiding anything that would cause divisions in the Body of Christ. 3. We will lift up each other in prayer in all that we do by turning to God for guidance and support, showing our gratitude and thanksgiving, and realizing we depend on Him for our entire existence. 4. We will offer a hand of hospitality welcoming all people by acknowledging the presence of others, greeting everyone with concern for them and openly sharing our biblical faith with everyone in word and deed. 5. We will be positive and joyful sharing openly our happiness in the Lord with fun, positive humor and inclusive fellowship always defending each other, speaking well of each other, and putting the best construction on everything.
