1 Saint Jude Catholic School November 15, 2017 What are you Thankful for? November is half over, the days are getting colder and winter is approaching. Store displays and TV commercials for Christmas seem to begin earlier each year. As we look forward to the Christmas Season with joyful anticipation, let s not forget to celebrate Thanksgiving! All happiness begins with thankfulness. St. Paul reminds us to Give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thess 5:18). Thanksgiving is a great time to reflect on the blessings we have received throughout the year. I am reminded of a book that I read called The Hiding Place. The book is a biography of a woman named Corey ten Boom. She was a Dutch watchmaker and a Christian who helped hide Jews during the Holocaust in World War II. She was arrested and sent to a concentration camp. She was an extremely joyful woman and her story is quite heroic. Her heroism stemmed from her gratitude for everything in her life good or bad. She gave thanks for everything!!! This was the root of her joy. I often reflect on 1 scene in the book where Corrie was quartered in a flea infested barracks with other prisoners. The fleas were everywhere and so thick that it was nearly unbearable. As terrible and inhumane as this was, Corrie was thankful for the fleas!! The reason? the fleas kept the guards from coming into the barracks to monitor them. Not being monitored, the prisoners were free to read the bible, pray, and give thanks to God for all of their blessings even amid the horror of a concentration camp. What a sobering lesson. That story helps to remind me that whatever inconvenience may come in my life, even a terrible tragedy, there is always something to be Thankful for. What is it you are thankful for? Happy Thanksgiving. Food Collection for the Poor A great way to show thanks is to share our blessings with those less fortunate. Next Tuesday at the All School Mass, we will take up a collection of food for those in need. Students can bring in a can to their homeroom teacher anytime up until Tuesday. The food will be placed in the bins of the church, much like we do at Mass on Sunday food collections. If you are able, please put a non-perishable food item in your book bag tonight so you won t forget to bring it in tomorrow. Thank you. VISION STATEMENT Our vision for St. Jude Catholic School is to create a faith-filled academic community composed of students, parents, faculty, and staff which offers a Christ-centered education and embraces the uniqueness of all students to be life-long learners. ST. JUDE SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT St. Jude Catholic School community, a vital part of the St. Jude Catholic parish, is dedicated to educating each child spiritually, intellectually, emotionally culturally, and physically. MARY S SOUP KITCHEN DESSERT DRIVE Student Council is asking for help from their fellow 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade classmates! On November 21 st, the Student Council is sponsoring a dessert drive for the St. Mary s Soup Kitchen Thanksgiving Dinner. All 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students, please bring desserts in disposable containers that do not need refrigeration. There will be a table in the main hallway for the desserts. Thank you for your help! St Jude Christmas Village A place for students to shop for Christmas gifts - is being held December 4 6 th in the Church Basement All students will receive a Christmas village packet by November 17 th which includes, a parent letter, money envelope and shopping list. All items for sale in the village are $5 or less and many items for only $1. However, it is not a dollar store. We have worked hard all year to find high quality gifts at a low price! Students K-4 th grade will be shopping, throughout the school day, Monday through Wednesday. Students grades 5 th 8 th are invited to shop after school from 2:40 pm 4:00 pm each day. Teachers, staff, parents and parish members are invited to join in shopping on Wednesday after school from 2:45 4:30pm. In order to continue offering Christmas Village for the students, we must have sufficient volunteers to help the younger students shop and to check the students out so they can return to class. If you can offer a couple hours during the school day, this is our greatest need! Please contact Janeann Perkins to volunteer or if you have any questions. Call or text: or janeann.perkins@outlook.com.
3 NO SCHOOL ON: Wednesday, November 22 nd - OFF Thursday, November 23 rd - OFF (Happy Thanksgiving!) Friday, November 24 th - OFF Wednesday, November 15 th Midterms go home ATTACHMENTS -Volunteers for Advent Wreath -Symptoms of Cold/Flu -Spirit Wear Form -Guideline: Head Lice -Scrip Express NOTES FROM THE NURSE Head Lice It is lice season and head lice are very common and affect 8-10 million people a year. Treatment MUST be done in conjunction with cleaning, or a re-infestation is likely! Treating for head lice without cleaning ALL living environments is leaving your child open for re-infestation! For children traveling between parents, share this information with everyone involved. Having head lice does not mean you are unclean or that you are a bad parent! Head lice are very common and it can affect everyone living with the infested person! Make sure that if you find lice on one head that you check everyone in the household. Most children will have a tickly or itchy sensation, but not always. Please see the Guidelines: Head Lice sheet attached. Cold and Flu Season With flu and cold season upon us, please follow the attached guidelines when deciding whether or not to send your child to school. We understand that you don t want your child to miss school, but neither do you want to send a sick child to school and expose him/her and other children if they have one or more of the symptoms - please see attachment at the end of this newsletter.
4 VOLUNTEERS FOR ADVENT WREATH During the Advent/Christmas season, you are invited to be part of a special ritual during the Sunday liturgies. You and your child (ren) might be interested in carrying up the candle and incense in procession for the Advent Wreath on one of the Sundays of Advent (Dec. 3/10) through Dec. 17/24. Name Phone Children participating: We are interested in the Advent Wreath Procession. Date Preferred: Mass preference: 5:00 7:00 9:00 11:00
5 Symptoms of the Cold/Flu * A persistent, productive cough or cold, particularly with a runny nose that has colored (greenish) discharge. * Diarrhea or vomiting. Keep your child home for 24 hours after the last episode (without taking medicine). * Fever of 100 degrees or greater. Your child should stay home 24 hours after the fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine, ie: Tylenol, Ibuprofen). * Drowsiness or lack of interest in playing, eating or participating in normally enjoyable activities, which could indicate the onset of illness. * An earache, a severe sore throat or red-burning-itching eyes that have a discharge. Don t forget to encourage your child to cough/sneeze into their arm/clothing instead of their hand(s), to wash their hands thoroughly and frequently, especially before eating and after using the restroom. This will help curb the spread of communicable diseases! Encourage eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water/fluids. Stay physically active and getting sufficient sleep. If symptoms get worse or breathing is compromised, call your healthcare provider or 911. Remember, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine.
