3 A Message From Our Pastor Dear People of St. Patrick, The month of October gives us many opportunities to look at the life of the Church through the examples of Mary, the Saints and the Angels. Yes, there are still saints and angels. In the Gospel today, the rich man, who had not reached out to Lazarus, the poor man begging, died and did not go to heaven. The rich man wanted to warn his brother, still alive, to learn to change their way of life and not be lost. We have the love of Mary and the example of her life on how to become a saint. The month of October is dedicated to praying the Rosary. Let us make more of an effort to pray this wonderful devotion to honor God by honoring the Mother of Jesus. Monday, we celebrate the Feast of St. Jerome, priest and doctor of the church. St. Jerome translated the bible from Greek into Latin. Jerome also had to struggle with his temper and gives hope to many of us as we struggle with our human emotions. Tuesday, is the Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church, the Little Flower. Therese was a Carmelite Nun who died at the age of 24 years from tuberculosis. She suffered a great deal in life but wrote, The Story of a Soul, which gives excellent advice on how to live a good life. Wednesday, we celebrate the Holy Guardian Angels. We believe God gives us a guardian angel when we are born, who prays for us and watches over us. Some of us really keep our poor guardian angels very busy. Prayer to the Guardian Angels Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God s love commits me here, Ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule, to guide. ~ Amen Thursday is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Francis, a humble Franciscan Brother, not a priest, who showed great compassion for all and love for all God s creation, earth, animals and people, especially those who were poor. More non-christians and lovers of animals come to have their pets blessed on the occasion of St. Francis Feast Day. A day to remind us of the many blessings God, our Loving Creator, has given to us and continues to bless our world. Let us pray that at the end of our lives, the angels and all the saints in heaven will be able to welcome us into God s kingdom of joy and happiness. God Bless, Fr. Larry Young Pastor

5 Life at St. Patrick When God allowed the rains to pour on our yearly St. Patrick School Fall Festival last Saturday, he had to be proud of the united spirit of the people of St. Patrick. Yes, we got wet but we moved everything inside the hall and went on with the festival. I am so proud of all our parents, students and teachers. Great job and thank you to all who came, worked and supported our school event. On Sunday, October 6, we will bless the animals at 1:30pm in front of the school. We ask St. Francis to pray for and to help protect our family pets. I always look forward to meeting my four legged friends and other types of animals on this day at their parish home. Thank you to all who purchased religious good items handmade in the Holy Land. Your generosity and support reminds us to help our fellow Catholics around the world. The couple who gives of their time to go around to the parishes is all volunteer for the cause. Annual October count taken every year in all our parishes of the Diocese is to help us plan for future needs of the Diocese of Oakland. I know it is a distraction, but the results are very important for the planning of Diocese. Thank you for your patience. Month of October, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on Monday, October 7. One way is through Faith Family activities. Every student in the school is assigned a Faith Family (our Kindergarteners sometimes call them our fake families! ) that includes a student from each grade K-8. This group of nine students is led by their Eighth Grade leader and together they participate in a variety of fun, prayerful, and cultural activities. This past week was our first Faith Family activity our Faith Family Picnic. Students had lunch together as a Faith Family then rotated to a variety of stations for games that were led by our Student Government leaders. This gave families a chance to get to know each other at the beginning of the year. Faith Family activities are scheduled once a month. This year s Spring Musical will be Aladdin, Jr. This week students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will have the chance to audition for a part of their choice.
