February 2011 Introducing Mr. Paul Snamiska KML Estate Plan/Deferred Gift Counselor Recent trends show that the Christian church received 33% of all charitable donations in America. It is also true that the church gets only 8% of all estate gifts (Christopher, J. Cliff. Not Your Parents Offering Plate 2008). Each of God s people has been given earthly blessings. Even after death we can use those gifts to advance our church and school ministries. Through estate planning and deferred gifts like insurance and annuities, we can often make a larger impact on ministry than we thought possible. Paul Snamiska s education path has been Wisconsin Lutheran High School, UW-Whitewater, Martin Luther College, and Concordia University of Wisconsin. His calling to the public ministry was to lead several Lutheran schools in Illinois and Wisconsin, including Pilgrim, Menomonee Falls within the KML Federation. Paul served on several committees at KML during that time and assisted the planning and growth of our ministry. Recently, Paul has served as the Program Administrator at Christian Life Resources. In that role, he created a variety of educational materials, worked with a nationwide network of affiliates, managed the international Life Centers in Ukraine and Bulgaria, and did a great deal of public speaking. While at CLR, Paul worked extensively with medical directives and counseled people on difficult end-of-life decisions. Paul is now excited to join the KML family and is eager to serve the Lord through this new calling as an estate counselor. A life-long learner, Paul will help the members of the KML Federation learn to use the many blessings God gives to advance the ministries of Christ through estate planning and deferred gifts. Paul and his wife, Amy, live in Menomonee Falls and are blessed with five children. The oldest four are out of the house, and Ella is a first grader at Bethlehem Lutheran. Do not hesitate to contact Paul at the KML Mission Advancement Office at paul.snamiska@kmlhs.org or call ext. 1116, or you can cut the bottom portion of this page and mail to: Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School Attn: Paul Snamiska 3399 Division Rd. Jackson, WI I have some questions about my current will/estate plan. I would like some help creating my first will/estate plan. I have questions about annuities and insurance plans that can help the ministries I love. I have a question about estate planning. Please contact me: Phone: Address: church:

KML news in brief Veterans Day Program Our eighth annual Veterans Day program took place Thursday, November 11. This year s theme was While Families Wait. Pastor Kenneth Mellon (former USAF) of Trinity, Pleasant Valley Road was our guest preacher. Various students also participated in this program through choral work, band, and special readings. Once again, this was a powerful event. We thank all who participated, and we thank those who serve us and who have served in the armed forces and their families. We estimate there were more than 300 guests. Quest for Quasi Our Fine Arts Department did an exceptional job with the performance of the Children s Theater production, Quest for Quasi. Their public performance to a full house was Tuesday evening, October 26. We hosted three grade school audiences on October 27. Many thanks to all of the students, faculty, staff, parents, and other volunteers for their dedication and hard work. Vision and Sustainability Two new committees will continue their work of evaluating and projecting long-term sustainability of our distinctively Lutheran education system. The ad hoc Sustainability Committee of KML is a think tank of leaders who brainstorm ideas from curriculum, marketing, recruitment, and governance. The elementary school principals have formed a Vision Task Force to assist the federation in working together rather than acting as separate ministry entities. They are considering what resources can be shared to improve our processes and increase the demand for a quality Lutheran education. Both of these groups are committed to teaching the Gospel to more families in the future. This is a great time to serve our Savior, Jesus Christ! We ask for wisdom and clear vision of what lies ahead for our schools. KML Senior Winner at Badger Girls State Event Senior Jessica Sandoval attended the 67th Annual Badger Girls State event in Oshkosh last June. Since she will most likely pursue a career in law (Prosecution or Criminology), Jessica chose to run for the Badger State Attorney General. She campaigned and eventually won by a landslide. There were approximately 800 girls who attended the event. She was also selected as an alternate to attend the same type of event, on a National level, held in Washington D.C. in July. There were four girls selected out of 800, two delegates and two alternates. Her Oath of Office was given by Wisconsin State Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson, as well as an introduction by Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

Dear alumni, You have read much in this issue about the historic vote on November 28, 2011, and our bold move to expand facilities on your high school campus. I ask for your help, and I pray that God blesses our efforts together to proclaim his name to our communities. As your high school expands its influence and teaches the name of Christ to this generation, I also pray you are strengthened in faith and purpose. May your lives be filled with courage and trust. May we stand together as a generation that will sacrifice all to serve the God who has saved us. Will you walk with us? David W. 5 Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School Performing Arts Center Proposed 750-seat facility A date to look forward to... November 28, 2011 The KMLBoard of Directors has recommended a vote to break ground for the Performing Arts Center at the General Board meeting on November 28, We thank the Lord for your support of the Walking the Path Together campaign. We still have much to do together, but the time has come to vote to move forward. For a successful vote to build we ask for a federation-wide effort to collect gifts and pledges now from all members of the KML family. Your support is essential to building this school of excellence. Every gift will count towards the advancement of the KML ministry. We know with God all things are possible!

KML Fine Arts Department Quick Facts 50% of the KML student body is directly involved in school music groups. There currently are seven curricular offerings that all use our one music room: Concert Choir, Womens Choir, Kantorei Choir, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Music Theory, and Basic Musicianship. This requires constant resetting of the room throughout the day. In addition to curricular classes, the following groups must find space and time outside of normal school hours to rehearse in our music room: Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Percussion Ensemble, Flute Choir, and Echoes. Private instruction in voice and piano also use normal practice rooms and a converted storage area to give lessons. The present facilities are also used to rehearse the 113 members of our Elementary School Band program. Our growing art program is currently housed in a space originally designed as a normal classroom. Our music area must also provide rehearsal and storage space for drama presentations. Drama and music performances use the gym for performances, disrupting other classes and activity programs.

What will it cost? Several steps have been taken to reduce the construction costs. It is estimated that construction and fees could be $3,933,440. Other project costs of lighting, sound, catwalks and rigging, parking lot, sound system, etc. are estimated at $600,000. If financed by municipal bonds, we estimate paying 3% interest with 1.5% in fees. For the past year our bond rate as been below 1% interest. How will it be paid for? As of January 26, 2011, $2,701,639 has been given and pledged for current debt reduction. We ask God to open the hearts of his people to accomplish these three steps: Gifts and pledges given now will reduce the need to borrow for the long term. It is essential that our twenty-eight churches participate at some level in debt reduction. We continue our efforts to solicit corporate gifts and foundation support. In addition to providing the much-needed space for our award-winning music program, our vision is to have our federated congregations and schools use this facility. KML would also like to benefit the community by expanding our Fine Arts Series and offering the facility to renowned fine arts groups.

What will the vote on November 28, 2011 really mean? The decision to build a Chapel/ Performing Arts Center has already been made. Before 2001, the federation established a four phase project estimated at a $20 million expense. Most of the work was accomplished already in the Time to Grow expansion dedicated in October of The last remaining piece of the original four-phase project is the worship, practice, and performance facility called the Performing Arts Center. The campaign for debt reduction is called Walking the Path Together. The delegates of the twenty-eight churches of the federation will officially vote on November 28, 2011, to establish a ground-breaking date for the long-awaited Chapel/Performing Arts Center. They must first evaluate our current debt and the gifts and pledges that are already committed. The delegates will also review the detailed floor plan of the PAC to make sure the facility will serve the federation well into the future. What will it take to get a yes vote to break ground? The delegates of the federation have already set the benchmark of $3 million in gifts and pledges before the vote to break ground can be taken. The Lord has blessed your giving and started answering prayers. We are only $300,000 from that benchmark! To encourage our delegates to vote yes on breaking ground for the Chapel/Performing Arts Center an additional $500,000 of new pledges is also requested. This demonstrates sustainability for the new debt from individual supporters. The leaders of our twenty-eight congregations in the federation will ask God to bless their KML debt-reduction plans through church budget stewardship. They will formally resolve to set aside an annual amount that the General Board delegates will combine to evaluate long-term sustainability of the Walking the Path debt. We will continue our efforts to secure grants from foundations that support the fine arts. Creating partnerships with local businesses and foundations will strengthen our school s mission. Finally, the detailed floor plans and cost estimates of the project will be evaluated by the delegates to ensure the new facility will meet the needs of the KML ministry for years to come. Essentially, your new gifts and pledges will help and encourage the delegates of the General Board to vote yes. What if the vote to break ground is not approved? If the vote to break ground is not approved on November 28, the Walking the Path campaign will continue and our current debt will remain a priority. We will be grateful for what God chooses to give and continue to trust in his timeline. Daily worship, concerts, worship festivals, and theater productions on campus will remain in the gymnasium. Our choral and band programs will not likely expand due to facility limitations. The thirteen separate ensemble groups will seek alternate practice corners throughout the school. Our single music room will continue to serve more than half of our student body as a practice and education site. Other curricular offerings, such as art and physical education, will be limited. When will we break ground? If God chooses to allow a yes vote on November 28, 2011, from the delegates of the General Board, we could break ground within weeks. The competitive bids and final working plans will be ready.

How long will the building construction take from start to completion? After all the contracts are in place, the project can be completed in 9-11 months. How can we get a stone? Two hundred thirty-seven people have already received a stone. They are participating in the What Does Your Stone Mean? program. For a one-time gift of $500 or a $175 pledge for three years, you can be a Path Paver. If you are able to make a $1,000 gift, your granite stone will be engraved with a word or Bible passage reference that has a special meaning to you and your family. Click on the What Does Your Stone Mean? link on the KML web site: You can read what other donor s stones mean to them. Their testimonials are inspiring, and you will understand why so many have chosen to support this building project. Receive your stone with an online donation or pledge, or contact Wendy Breimon in the Mission Advancement office at ext wendy.breimon@kmlhs.org Can we name a room in the PAC? Let all we do be a witness to the glory of our God. We are encouraging our donors and their families to make a gift large enough to name the rooms of the Chapel/ Performing Arts Center. The practice rooms will line the Hall of Heroes. The donor can choose a biblical hero of faith to identify a room. The five larger practice rooms can be named after significant biblical sites that are significant to our Christian heritage. As donors choose the identification for each room, they will be able to write an explanation or reason the biblical name or location is significant to them. The rooms will be clearly marked with permanent plaques that may be signed by the giver. You can check out the floor plan and suggestions for the biblical room names on the KML web site at: If you want to make a gift and select the room name, please call David Bartelt or Wendy Breimon in the Mission Advancement office at I just gave a gift, why are pledges so important? Pledges benefit the donor and KML. The Federation that owns the campus can be confident the long-term debt can be serviced through pledges from individuals. The donor benefits from staying closely connected to KML for a longer period of time. Often the gifts given over a longer period may have greater impact than a one-time gift. What will be done with the stones? Each owner of a stone will bring theirs back to the ground-breaking service. Their stone represents their gift to the Lord and will be a witness of God s grace for generations to come. The stone will be placed at the altar during the worship service. The builders will incorporate the stones into the Chapel/Performing Arts Center facility. Generations will be reminded what your stone means. Will the PAC be available to the community? There will be many opportunities to invite the surrounding communities to our campus for concerts, theater productions, and worship services. They will see excellence in Lutheran education. We have the chance to be lights for the name of Jesus! In addition, we will invite professional organizations, orchestras, and theater groups to perform in our facility. KML can increase the appreciation of the fine arts in Washington County. Is there interest from outside organizations to use our PAC? Yes! Letters of interest have been received from The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, The Kettle Moraine Symphony, and The Trinity Irish Dancers. These organizations are excited to bring the fine arts to Washington County.

Who will benefit from the KML PAC? Worship Life Our student body, faculty, staff, and campus guests will have a worship setting that is focused on Christ Furniture, symbols, and large musical instruments can be protected and carefully maintained Academic Help alleviate scheduling issues in offering students the classes they want Eliminate many scheduling conflicts due to lack of space Athletic Reduce wear and tear on the gym area caused by set up for concerts, musicals, and other fine arts activities The gym is currently used for multiple purposes, and the PAC could help avoid some of the space and time conflicts The additional availability of facilities might allow us to seriously consider beginning another winter sport for boys Art Currently, the visual arts program is limited by space. Students must put away all supplies and work before leaving the classroom every day. This creates a variety of issues that limit the curriculum and academic growth of our students. When the Performing Arts Center is built, the art room will move to the current music room which is approximately four times larger than the art room. This extra space would allow for a more organized and expanded art program. Student s perspective Band & Choral Parent Alumni KML has an extensive music program, with around 300 students throughout the day squeezing into one room about the size of one of our larger class rooms. A PAC would relieve the growing stress of the music program and add space for daily choir and band classes. Give KML a chance to truly show off its talent during the various plays and concerts Daily chapel in the gym involves setting up more than 100 chairs each day for worship. With a PAC, the students would be allowed to worship and praise God in an environment that doesn t smell or look like a gym. It is obvious that Kettle is blessed with a great campus. We have four computer labs, nice football fields and ball diamonds, two soccer pitches, large outdoor areas for biology and AP Environmental Science classes, a solar panel system, two gyms, plus a great place to run for Cross Country. Any student at KMLHS can easily see how a Performing Arts Center will complete our school. Our own programs will be able grow. Dedicated practice space will be more efficient for practice and equipment. Individual singing groups and instrumental ensembles will no longer compete for space and practice times. The facility is a commitment to an important part of the education of our students in the fine arts. At KML, parents have been blessed to see and hear their children use their skills in the classroom and on the fields, courts, and the track. The PAC will provide a new vision into God s blessings, one which presents the opportunity for our students to showcase their God-given talents. Alumni will be able to experience all the amenities which the PAC will offer. Alumni will have the opportunity to utilize the facility for other events, and of course, support the current KML students in their performance and expression of the fine arts. With the addition of the PAC to the KML campus, alumni will have a new reason to visit their high school and witness God s plan in blessing their high school. Grade School Band Community The PAC will contain many rooms that will benefit not only the Fine Arts Department at KML, but the entire school and federation, offering a quality environment for the students of the KML Federation to learn about music and the arts. The Grade School Band Program currently has 113 students. The auditorium will provide adequate and improved rehearsal space that will optimize the education our children receive. The PAC facility will bring the fine arts to Washington County. Our visitors will see what excellence looks like in Lutheran education as they come to concerts, theater productions, and professional performances. The PAC will show the our current and future Charger families our dedication to a quality education in the arts. However, all our students, involved with the fine arts or not, will benefit from this new facility. May God lead you to support the PATH campaign.
