{1}. John 14: The Promise of the Spirit A. Introduction 1. Promises a. we have just beheld an election in the U.S. with startling results b. the airwaves were filled with vehement rhetoric c. and like every election, so it seems, with countless promises that can never be fulfilled hopefully, in some cases d. but God s promises are of a different character (A) He always keeps them (B) and in fact, through His incarnation as God the Son, as Jesus of Nazareth, born in that stable in Bethlehem (C) they have indeed already been fulfilled in eternal terms though this has not yet been made manifest to mankind (D) For the Son of God, Christ Jesus, who was preached among you by us by me and Silvanus and Timothy was not yes and no, but is yes in Him. For as many as may be the promises of God, in Him they are yes; wherefore also by Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us. (2 Corinthians 1:19-20) (E) which says that every promise to be found in God s word is fulfilled it is yes, or true; it stands ( Amen ) to the Glory of God e. one such promise is that of the Holy Spirit 2. The Context a. today s passage follows upon, and is an explanation and enlargement on the concluding verses of last week s message b. Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me; otherwise believe on account of the works themselves. (John 14:10-11) c. this describes the unity of God the Father & God the Son (A) in the words they have spoken to mankind (B) in the works they have done for mankind d. what follows has more to say about those works, and about another aspect of that unity in the Godhead B. Promised Works : Greater Works (12)
a. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father. (John 14:12) (A) note the general application of this verse (B) it applies to the one who believes in Me (C) not just to a specially saintly group; not just to the apostles and other gifted men of the NT church b. this is a verse, then, in which we are practising unbelievers! (A) for our immediate reactions are: (1) I cannot make the blind to see (2) I cannot heal the lame (3) I cannot raise the dead to life (B) so we somehow qualify Jesus words, limiting them to such men as Peter and Paul did in the book of Acts c. but they are and must be true, even if applied only in the sense of physical works (miracles) (A) with all those who received special spiritual gifts in the NT church to establish the message of the gospel (B) and exercised those gifts for many years across the greater territory of the Roman empire than just the land of Palestine (C) must have accounted for more miracles than Jesus did (D) but is that what is meant here? d. are those physical miracles the greater works? (A) where now are those who were healed? (B) where those raised from the dead; where is Lazarus? (C) all the results have now passed on out of the sight of men e. what about the spiritual works? (A) how many followers were there at the end of Jesus 3½- year ministry up and down the land of Palestine: just over 500? (B) how many were added to the number of the church on the day of Pentecost: some 3,000 and in the days thereafter? (C) how many have you had some part in bringing to the Lord: some in sowing, some in watering the seed, some in reaping (D) multiply that over and over again, and remember that these results are not temporal, passing away, but eternal (E) these are the greater works promised to those who follow Christ f. and for these works to be done
(A) (B) (C) (D) Jesus Christ had to walk the path to the cross & death Jesus had to be raised from the dead to secure our salvation Jesus had to ascend to the Father to present His perfect sacrifice and to sit on the right hand of the Majesty on high on our behalf 2. Answers to Prayer (13-14) a. And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. (A) answered prayer is not new in the NT (B) the Psalmist testifies, This poor man cried and the LORD heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. (Psalms 34:6 NAS) (C) but prayer is now made and answered on a more personal basis b. (here is another verse where we are practising unbelievers!) c. Prayer is now asked in the Name of Jesus (A) now, all too often and I speak for myself we tag on that phrase, in Jesus Name at the end of the prayer without much thought (B) but think upon it for a moment (C) Name in Scripture especially the Name of Deity stands for all that the Person is; it speaks of His character, His attributes, and His purposes and will (D) to pray in the Name of Jesus, is not just tagging on His Name at the end, but consciously and deliberately aligning our requests with His declared will and purposes (1) prayer of any other kind will not be granted: You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend [it] on your pleasures. (James 4:3 NAS) (2) Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me, Because they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of the LORD. (Proverbs 1:28-29 NAS) d. But note also that the answer to prayer comes from Jesus (A) that will I do (B) I will do it (C) from the Jesus who walked upon this earth (D) from the Jesus who was tempted in all points as we, but without sin (E) the one who redeemed us and is our forerunner into heaven (F) it is Jesus who answers our prayers to that the Father may be glorified in the Son
(G) let, therefore, our prayer be in the will of God, to the glory of God C. Promised Paraclete : The Meaning of Paraclete a. is One who has been called along beside another b. it can be, and is, variously translated as (A) helper the One assisting a person in need of help (B) comforter in the original sense of the word, the One who brings strength to another com (with) + fort (strong) (C) advocate the exact Latin equivalent of the Greek, advocatus one called alongside to defend another a friend at court when this word is used as a verb it means: to help, to encourage, to entreat, to exhort, and to comfort (D) the Paraclete performs all these ministries, and more (E) both directly to believers, and through believers c. these next verses introduce the Paraclete, explaining (A) who He is (B) whence He comes (C) to whom He comes d. but Jesus will have much more to say concerning Him on this last evening with His disciples 2. The Primacy of Love (15) a. If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. b. In one sense, this is not given as a condition to be met before the promise that follows is granted (A) that is, the receipt of the Paraclete by the believer is not delayed until he or she has perfectly fulfilled this verse (B) (C) loves the Lord with all heart, all the soul, all the mind, all the might and proves that love by a complete keeping of Jesus command, By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:35) c. yet, in another sense it is (A) for it is the exercise of love to Christ (B) demonstrated by obedience to Christ s words (C) that marks a man or a woman as a true believer
(D) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. (1 John 5:2-3) d. so we see a vital link between (A) love for God and obedience to God (B) love for Christ and obedience to Christ (C) which should not startle us as Jesus Christ is God the Son 3. Another Helper (16) a. And I will request ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; (A) Jesus, when speaking of His prayer to the Father, always uses a different word than is used of disciples prayer (B) even the word, request, may not adequately differentiate this (C) I think of the president of a company giving the treasurer a travel request: there is never any question that it will be honoured and the necessary flight will be booked and the tickets paid for (D) so that prayer from the lips of Jesus is of a different order than our own, because His heart is always perfectly attuned to the heart of God: My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Thy will be done. (Matthew 26:42) b. verse 15, as we said, if it were a condition of either salvation or of sanctification, would be a hopeless hurdle to cross (A) but Jesus has an answer for the believer, for His disciples (B) it is another Helper another Paraclete (C) requested by the Son; given by the Father will provide the help that will transform one who is in love with this world into one who is in love with God, with the Lord, Jesus Christ c. this Paraclete is another Paraclete (A) they have been travelling with a Paraclete Jesus during His ministry over the past three years (B) this Paraclete, Jesus, is going away He will still be that and is called that: and if anyone sins, we have an Advocate Paraclete with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; (1 John 2:1) (C) Jesus is our Paraclete in heaven (D) this other Paraclete being another of the same Nature: Divine is to be with us upon this earth never, ever to depart from us
4. The Holy Spirit (17) a. that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. (A) Jesus Christ has just declared that He is the Truth (verse 6) (B) the Holy Spirit is (1) marked by that Truth, being also called the Spirit of Christ (2) makes known that Truth to those who would come to Christ (3) defends that Truth against the spirit of error of this world b. this Spirit cannot be received by the world (A) that is, by those living in this sinful world system (B) that world cannot see nor know the Holy Spirit because it has been deceived by the Liar (C) in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:4) (D) 1 John 4:6 tells us that there is a spirit of truth and a spirit of error this world is governed by the spirit of error (E) and cannot receive this Spirit of truth (F) (until their eyes are opened to faith by that same Holy Spirit) c. but the disciples of that day, and of this do know Him (A) in the OT, the Holy Spirit would come upon men and women and use them to accomplish the purpose of God (B) but it was temporary as it came upon Saul for a season, for example; or so that David could rightly pray, Do not cast me away from Thy presence, And do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me. (Psalms 51:11) (C) (D) (By the way, it is questionable whether the Christian should sing this) so the Holy Spirit was an abiding presence with the OT saint, but a more intimate, a permanent experience of the Spirit s dwelling within the believer is the NT promise D. Promised Union : He Is Coming (18-19) a. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. After a little while the world will behold Me no more; but you [will] behold Me; because I live, you shall live also. b. when is He coming? (That is the question we always ask!) (A) there are three possible answers
(B) in the most immediate way, Jesus was going away from them into the darkness of physical death, and would come to them again in the resurrection within the next few days (1) that resurrection would be the pledge of our own some day (2) that resurrection would give us life, even as He is alive (C) in a more durable sense He will be coming in the Person of the Holy Spirit another Paraclete like unto Himself (1) not leaving us in the world as orphans without natural help (2) but in the Person of the Helper residing with us (D) in a final sense, when He returns at His second coming, to receive those who believe in him to be with Himself c. while all three are present, and the last as the ultimate fulfilment of which the earlier are preliminary (A) the context of the teaching of the coming Holy Spirit (B) suggests that the day of Pentecost is primarily in view (C) that is as in And gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," [He said,] "you heard of from Me; (Acts 1:4 NAS) (D) which the world did not recognise, ascribing the events they saw that day to men filled with new wine 2. God s Abiding Presence (20) a. In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. b. when the Spirit comes to abide in the believer, then he or she know this truth c. this is the spiritual knowledge that results not from intellectual reason and argument, but because God dwells within us. E. Conclusion 1. What a glorious, enabling promise this is of the Holy Spirit! a. helping, strengthening, encouraging b. the means of our being indwelt by God Himself c. all the while as we walk in this earthly pilgrimage
