1 THEO-500 X K - Ecclesiology Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary Spring 2019 Online Course Instructor: Yoo Jin Choi (yoojinchoi99@hotmail.com) Course description: In this course we (Korean speaking students and instructor) will investigate and reflect on the church as a community of disciples engaged in following Jesus by the Spirit, crying out in vibrant hope of the eschatological banquet; this source of Koreaness leads us to find hybrid spaces as alternatives to mainstream hegemonic churches of the U.S. Objectives: After completing this course, the student will be able to: Exhibit knowledge of the loci of ecclesiology in some of their more salient formulations; Relate this doctrine to the other theological loci, pneumatology and eschatology in a cogent fashion; Perform an ideological critique and retrieval of this doctrine in question; Connect this doctrine to ministry and praxis in the world. Topics to be covered: Interrelated Ecclesiology with Pneumatology and Eschatology Overview of Ecclesiology in Tradition and Contemporary Theology Alternative Churches to Hegemonic White Churches: Black Church, Latino/a Church, Korean Church in the U.S. The Relationship between Church and Kingdom of God Requirements: 1. Class Attendance and Participation. Each lecture will be uploaded by Sunday 11:55 p. m. CST. After watching video/audio lecture, upload just one sentence of your questions and comments on Moodle by every Wednesday 11:55 p. m. CST (10% of grade) 2. Group work in Google Docs. After reading weekly reading material (from 2 nd week to 12th week) each student will be placed into a group that will discuss and elaborate on that text in dialogue with the class readings and lectures, in the time span between Thursday and Monday, via Google Docs, with help of a peer group leader. Each week (for ten weeks) participation will be evaluated on a scale of 1-10, with a maximum of 100 points possible. The criterion for the grading of this dimension will be whether the student is thoughtful and thorough in this process. This process will be of assistance in putting together ideas for the final paper (30% of grade). 3. Autobiographical paper based on the participant s church experiences learn from Jung Young Lee s autobiography (Marginality, 7-27) Write a 4 page paper (double-spaced) describing, in two pages for each section: (a) most influential factors in becoming who you are (family, location, community, church, friends, ect.); (b) how much and in what way your church influences who you are (your own church experiences) and, ultimately, what is your church for

2 you? What light does this experience shed on your ecclesiological presuppositions? What do you need to investigate further? Upload to Moodle by 11:55 p.m. CST March 7, 2019 (20% of grade). 4. Final Paper about a church which you dream of (3,000-4,000 words, double-spaced, font Times New Roman size 12 points) Based on each week s reading material, write your ecclesiology. Imagine the church you want to plant or the church you want to work in; which is more important: tradition or theology for your church from the reading material; what are the contrasts and similarities with your old churches you attended or pastored before in your autobiographical paper; which aspects your church contributes to the Kingdom of God; where is your church is located; who comes to your church, etc. Upload to Moodle by 11:55 p.m. CST May 8, 2019 (40% of grade).
