1 THEO 5215: New Testament Greek Exegesis 1st Term Instructor: Prof. Eric K. C. WONG CKB706 Thu 9:30 am 12:15 pm; I. Aim of the Course The main purpose of this course is to enable students who have learned New Testament Greek I & II to do translation and thence exegesis of the Greek New Testament. Those who have equivalent proficiency in NT Greek may join this course. Participating students are expected to consult tools, works of modern interpretation, besides the text of the NT. II. Learning Outcomes: A) Knowledge Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1) understand deeper issues of the Greek grammar; 2) read and understanding the original Greek text of the NT; 3) do exegesis on particular text with an relatively objective attitude 4) appreciate the pluralistic world of the Greek language and thought B) Attitude Outcomes 1) to develop students appreciation of the New Testament text as well as the diversity of its interpretation; 2) to develop students ability to have a critical, yet sympathetic understanding of the NT; 3) to develop students analytical mind in reading scholarly opinions. III. Learning Activities A) Lectures: There will be lectures on a given text of the Greek NT in each class. The electronic teaching medium BLACKBOARD will serve as a discussion and information exchange forum, besides classroom. B) Group Discussion There is group discussion or individual presentation in the first hours of each class on a pre-given text of the Greek NT. Grammatical and background issues will be dealt with. C) Presentation Each student will be assigned a text (or approved by instructor) for presentation. Research students have to do this exercise twice. The results of this text may further develop into the final term paper of this course. 1

2 D) Extra Meeting beyond Class: It is possible for students to ask for individual or group discussion / meeting with teacher outside class. E) Requirements and Expectations 1) It is expected that participating students should attend class regularly; 2) Read and prepare the pre-given Greek text before attending class; 3) Actively join the group discussion and raise questions of the text concerned; 4) A habit of reading the Greek NT daily is highly encouraged. IV. Class Schedule (to be given) V. Assessment scheme Time for submission of the works required is on the teaching day as specified. Late submission is not allowed. If granted by the instructor, each day of delay will result a deduction of 3 marks. 1. Short Essays (3 x 15 marks) 45% Students shall write 3 short essays after reading, discussing and receiving lectures on the 3 texts of the Greek NT. Word limits: 1000 words. Submission date: 19/9; 10/10; 31/10 2. Group Discuss and Class Participation 15% 3. Title of the Term Paper (7/11) 10% 4 Pages (Table of Content, Introduction, Conclusion and Bibliography) 4. Final Paper 30% An essay with footnotes and bibliography of about 3,000 words is to be submitted on or before Week 12. Assessment based on Paper-Grading Rubric System (see Attachment). Submission date: 21/11 VI. Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Honesty is a kind of virtue, for which everyone at the university is expected. Students must submit their papers via VeriGuide and hand in a print out of receipt and a signed Academic Honesty Declaration Statement.
