1 Chinese University of Hong Kong Divinity School of Chung Chi College THEO5226: Theology and Feminism 神學與女性主義 Tuesdays 9:30am-12:15nn Classroom: CCT T41 Instructor: WONG Wai Yin Christina Office Hours: By Appointment Course Overview In parallel with the prevalence of women s movement and the emergence of feminism, feminist theology has ongoing emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. It aims at questioning the masculinist paradigms of theology in the Western Judeo-Christian religious traditions and offering creative constructive alternatives in current Global Christianity. The trend of feminist theology further expands from a universal (white) feminist theological articulation to a diverse interrupted practices in class, race, and culturally specific contexts. The course aims at exposing students to a broad perspective and discussion about the dynamic relationship between theology and feminism. In addition to studying the experiences of contemporary women and feminist critiques on violence, sexuality, poverty, and ecology, the students will encourage to reexamine the ways in which the Western Judeo-Christian religious traditions have profoundly influenced our understanding of God and gender and to study the feminist interpretations of God-talk, redemption, spirituality, and church. Learning Outcomes After successfully completing this course with a final grade of B or above, students will be able to: Identify and analyze some of the critical concepts, methods, and debates in feminist theologies; Demonstrate an understanding of critical scholarship and interdisciplinary methodology of the field of feminist theologies; Be aware of the influence of gender on theological proposals and interpretations. Procedure This course will involve lectures by the instructor, extensive class discussions in a variety of formats, tutorial, student presentations, and power point presentation, striving to engage a diversity of feminist theologies through a multiplicity of resources. What events were most important to you along this journey? How did malestream interpretation affect how you viewed yourself in God s eyes? What motivates you to study feminist theology? What do you get any new insights so far and what do you want to explore in future. Then, write a letter to her to express what you think and feel about her life and ministry from a feminist theological perspective. 3. Research Paper Words: in Chinese or in English; Due Date: April 26, Page outline will be presented to the class on Mar. 15, 2016, including a thesis statement (a focuesed statement about what you intend to accomplish in your paper), an outline, and an annotated bibliography. You will present the results of your research on April 12, 2015 to the class. 9 Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Attention is drawn to University policy and regulations on honesty in academic work, and to the disciplinary guidelines and procedures applicable to breaches of such policy and regulations. Details may be found at With each assignment, students will be required to submit a signed declaration that they are aware of these policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures. In the case of group projects, all students of the same group should be asked to sign the declaration, each of whom is responsible should there be any plagiarized contents in the group project, irrespective of whether he/she has signed the declaration and whether he/she has contributed directly or indirectly to the plagiarized contents. For assignments in the form of a computer-generated document that is principally text-based and submitted via VeriGuide, the statement, in the form of a receipt, will be issued by the system upon students uploading of the soft copy of the assignment. Assignments without the properly signed declaration will not be graded by teachers. Only the final version of the assignment should be submitted via VeriGuide. The submission of a piece of work, or a part of a piece of work, for more than one purpose (e.g. to satisfy the requirements in two different courses) without declaration to this effect shall be regarded as having committed undeclared multiple submission. It is common and acceptable to reuse a turn of phrase or a sentence or two from one s own work; but wholesale reuse is problematic.
