2 Our Work Our ministry to North Korean Christians includes emergency relief like food, shelter and medicine; distributing Bibles; and strengthening the church through radio broadcasts. North Korea has been ranked as the hardest country to live as a Christian since Christians face extreme levels of pressure and violence in all areas of life, even just owning a Bible is illegal. All citizens are taught to worship Kim Jong-un from a very young age. Many Christians live as secret believers, and don t even share their faith with their children or family. If Christians are discovered, they are sent to labour camps, tortured or even killed on the spot. Their families, considered guilty by association, share the same fate. Every Christian in North Korea has made that choice I am convinced he can take the suffering because he constantly reminds himself of the joy that is set before him. Christian from North Korea. There are a lot of struggles and obstacles in our daily lives; however, we have Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life. 3 02 Afghanistan Officially there are no Christians in Afghanistan. Believers are in hiding and although there are small groups of Christians, there is no organised church. Christians are intensely cautious about who they share their faith with. If a believer is found out, they could be excluded from the community, admitted to a mental institution, or killed for their faith. 4 03 Somalia There is no safe place in Somalia for Christians to practice their faith. Almost all Christians come from a Muslim background. Community and family members persecute anyone who leaves and converts who are discovered are usually killed. Even suspected Christians are persecuted. Older Christians say that the generation born in the 1990s have become intolerant and some believers were killed by their children s children. The government believes that there are no Somali Christians. 5 04 Libya Libya has been in civil war since Organised crime thrives and ic extremists violently attack and kidnap Christians. Believers caught evangelising can be arrested. All Libyans are considered to be Muslim and are forbidden from going to church. Christian converts from must hide their faith, especially from family. Many risk their lives to follow Jesus and have to consider fleeing the country. 6 05 Pakistan Christians in Pakistan often live in poverty due to discrimination in the workplace. The blasphemy law also means Christians can lose their jobs, social status or their lives for speaking out about their faith. Muslims wishing to convert to Christianity are threatened by their friends and family. Pakistan is one of the most violent countries in the world for Christians, however the church continues to meet together despite the cost. Then I think: Will it really be disrupted or will I be sent into the fullness of worship? 7 06 Sudan Sudan is a staunchly ic country that is known for supporting ic extremist groups. President al-bashir wants to establish an ic state and ensure that all citizens follow strict Sharia (ic) laws. Sudanese Christians face persecution daily. Churches are destroyed, church leaders are often arrested and falsely accused of crimes they did not commit, and there are extremely high levels of violence. 8 07 Eritrea Known as the North Korea of Africa, Eritrea is an extremely volatile place for Christians. The government makes daily life difficult. Homes are raided, Bibles confiscated and Christians are forced to disappear. In ic regions of Eritrea, converts face persecution from their family members. Believers are imprisoned and tortured so they deny Christ. Despite this, the church continues to remain faithful in the face of persecution. Forgiving one s persecutors is not easy, but Christ calls us to be merciful and He warned us that following Him and preaching His gospel will bring persecution. 9 08 Yemen Due to the civil war that began in 2015, at least 14 million people are at risk of famine in Yemen. In this environment, persecution and ic extremism has flourished. An estimated 85,000 children have died of malnutrition. Yemen is an ic and clan-based society. Converting to Christianity is seen as betraying one s clan and new believers are often disowned, forced into a Muslim marriage or killed. 10 09 Iran The Iranian government supresses Christianity in fear it might replace the ic way of life. Under Sharia (ic) law, Christians who evangelise to Muslims can be thrown in prison or have their churches closed down. Converts from also face the death penalty. Christian media is monitored by the government and believers using such websites or channels are tracked down. Despite this, the church in Iran continues to grow. 12 Our Work Through local partners, we strengthen the church and provide emergency relief to persecuted believers. We also deliver Bibles, train in job skills and help adults learn to read and write. The leader of a radical Hindu group in India has declared that by the end of 2021, they want to remove Christianity from India. Churches are regularly monitored and disrupted. Police officers rarely intervene when Christians are persecuted. Some groups are working towards Hindutva, a process to make Indian rule exclusively Hindu and in some areas it s illegal to convert to Christianity. Those who do convert are often attacked or even killed. Sharing the gospel has dangerous consequences, yet God is strengthening His Church and many believers want to share Christ. 13 11 Syria Even though Christians have been in Syria since the first century, is now the main religion. Since the war broke out in 2011, ic extremist groups previously oppressed by the government have been able to operate. The ic State, well known for their violent persecution of Christians, are one of many groups seeking to remove Christianity from Syria. 14 12 Nigeria Twelve states in northern Nigeria enforce Sharia (ic) Law. Christians are pressured not to wear a cross or carry a Bible. Attacks from the ic extremist group, Boko Haram, and clashes between Muslim Fulani Herdsmen and Christian farmers have left many dead. Christian homes and churches have also been destroyed. Nigeria is one of the most violent countries for Christians in the world. 15 13 Iraq Iraqi society is becoming more ic and corruption in the country can lead to Christians losing their land and homes. Despite cities being liberated from the ic State, thousands of fighters remain in Iraq. Whilst it has been safe for some Christians to return home, many struggle to stay due to lack of jobs. Traditional and evangelical churches have been divided for many years. However, many church leaders said the ic State helped unify the church. We were all busy with our lives, gathering money and putting money aside, but it made us wake up and cry for God. Shlama*, Open Doors local partner from Iraq. 16 14 Maldives If you are born in the Maldives, you are born a Muslim. Leaving is not tolerated and could result in the loss of citizenship. For the small number of Christians in the Maldives, normal church life is impossible. Christians can t do any religious activities in public and have no complete Bible in their native language. Christian parents often have to hide their faith and send their children to ic schools. 17 15 Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabian law forbids the practice of any religion other than. Conversion from is punishable by death. There are no church buildings and Christian services are held in secret. At home, Christians risk honour-killings or violent attacks from their families and communities. Despite these challenges, the number of Saudi Christians is increasing. 18 16 Egypt Christians experience limited rights and freedom in Egypt. Persecution, oppression and land theft are common for Egyptian Christians. Unfair laws imposed by the state ensure equality for Christians is limited. There have been more violent incidents towards Christians in Egypt than in past years. Persecution continues from ic groups, government officials and even family members. 20 Our Work We support Central Asian Christians who are in prison, excluded from their family and community, and are in need of jobs. We deliver Bibles, disciple believers, and give micro-loans. The church faces immense pressure from a paranoid government. A believer can be fined for having a Christian song on their phone. In some areas, it s even illegal to own a Bible. Christians are constantly monitored; phones are tapped and spies try to infiltrate gatherings. House churches are frequently raided and those present can be detained for up to 15 days, interrogated and fined. Despite this, many believers are standing firm in their faith and continue to share the gospel. 21 18 Myanmar Buddhism is the dominant religion in Myanmar. Many Buddhist groups pressure minorities such as Muslims and Christians to leave the country to keep Myanmar pure. Thousands of Christians have also been displaced due to civil war. Most Christians are extremely poor, especially in rural areas, and get stuck in the cycle of poverty due to ethnic and religious discrimination. In September 2018, a Communist paramilitary group closed more than 60 churches and detained over 100 church leaders. 22 19 Laos In this Communist nation, Christianity is branded as a Western influence so believers are often seen as a threat by the authorities. Persecution is more common in rural areas and mostly comes from family and community. Sometimes new Christians are expelled from their communities and forced to live in the jungle for months, even years, before relocating. Beun was imprisoned for five months for sharing the gospel. But his time in prison made his faith stronger. 23 20 Vietnam In Communist Vietnam, Christians are seen as dangerous and accused of betraying their culture. New believers have their rights stripped away and are often forced flee from their village to escape the violence. Some Christian children from an ethnic minority are not allowed to go to school because of their faith. Printing the Bible is restricted in Vietnam, making it hard to grow in faith. Any public expression of Christianity can lead to imprisonment. 24 21 Central African Republic The majority of the population is Christian, however, ic extremist groups and corruption make life difficult. Christian homes and churches are attacked, leaving thousands of Christian families homeless, unemployed and forced to live in camps. New Christians are often ostracised or beaten by their family and neighbours to force them to deny Jesus. They rarely get to meet with other Christians and lack support. 26 Our Work Through our local partners, we distribute Bibles and Christian literature, help Christians find jobs and train believers. In 2018, violence increased dramatically in Algeria and a dozen churches were closed. Algeria rose 20 ranks on the 2019 World Watch List. The main source of violence comes from relatives of Christian converts. It s even more dangerous for Christians in rural and conservative ic parts of the country. Christians are becoming bolder in their faith and have even been imprisoned for sharing their faith on social media. Though the influence of ic extremism is increasing, there is an openness to the gospel and people are coming to faith in Jesus. 27 23 Turkmenistan During the days of the Soviet Union, atheism was enforced by the state. Religion is still viewed with suspicion and distrust, and the church is heavily regulated. Police raids, surveillance and confiscation of Christian materials are common. Most Turkmens identify as Muslim. Converting from to Christianity can lead to violent persecution and rejection from family and community. 28 24 Mali Mali is predominantly Muslim and one of the least developed countries in the world. Most Christians live in the south of the country and many face increasing pressure due to the threat of ic extremist groups, like al-qaeda, from the north. It s hard for Muslims who convert from Christianity to live out their faith and they often have to keep it a secret from their families. Missionaries also live under the constant threat of abduction. 29 25 Mauritania Poverty is rampant in Mauritania. One third of Mauritanian children are malnourished and society has also become more accepting of ic extremism. Christians rights are rarely protected and those who leave to follow Jesus lose everything. If they don t deny their faith in three days, the punishment is death. The underground church is very dependent on foreign aid and struggles with jealousy and mistrust. This is becoming a barrier for people to grow in their faith. 30 26 Turkey In Turkey, and strong nationalism co-exist. Christians often feel pressured to stay silent in their faith. Outspoken believers can face discrimination in their workplace and in the legal system. Some are also falsely accused of crimes they didn t commit. Although the marginalisation of Christians looks to be increasing, the church in Turkey remains faithful and is growing stronger each day. Esther and her family fled to Turkey after being threatened with imprisonment in Iran because of their faith. But life as a refugee in Turkey is difficult. 32 Our Work Open Doors is strengthening the Chinese church by preparing them for persecution through discipleship training and delivering Bibles.
