3 St. Mary on the Hill June 25, 2017 This Sunday I am celebrating the Focus on Abilities Mass at 12:15. Our Focus on Abilities Mass is a Mass at which we want to offer a warm welcome to all our parishioners no matter what their life circumstances may be. It is at this Mass in particular that we look for opportunities for those with disabilities to serve. It is scheduled for the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:15 mass. And every fourth Sunday we will take a look in this space at how people are challenged by different disabilities. Today we focus on Visual Impairments: Visual impairment is defined as a limitation of one or more functions of the eye or visual system. The most common visual impairments affect the sharpness or clarity of vision (visual acuity) OR the normal range of what you can see (visual fields). Leading causes of visual impairments in the United States are age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. Other eye disorders, eye injuries, health conditions and birth defects can also cause vision loss. Lost vision cannot be restored; however, it can be managed. A loss of vision means that you have to reorganize your life and learn new ways of doing daily activities. If you have some vision, visual aids such as special glasses and large print books can make life easier. In addition, there are many computer applications, text reading software and Braille books that are available for individuals who have no vision. There are resources readily available for individuals with visual impairments: - Your eye doctor - National Eye Institute - American Foundation for the Blind ( - All About Vision (allaboutvision.com) - National Federation of the Blind ( - Lion s Club Organizations - Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services GLASS GLASS provides accessible reading materials to Georgians who, due to a disability, are unable to read standard print. Services include books and magazines in audio formats, Braille and digital downloads; loan of playback machines for recorded materials; more than 70,000 titles that are accessible online and free delivery to your door via US Postal Service. Vernon Knight, Parochial Vicar: At Sunday Mass, you may have heard the announcement that St. Mary on the Hill is receiving a new Parochial Vicar, or saw a notice in the bulletin that says a new parochial vicar is coming. I d like to introduce myself, my name is Fr. Vernon Knight. I have been a priest for three years and I am coming from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Macon, Ga where I served two years under Fr. Allan McDonald and last year Fr. Scott Winchel. I am originally from Indiana but because of my father s twenty years of service in the military, I am really an Army Brat. My family settled in Warner Robins, Ga where my parents and younger brother still live and where I went to high school and college. From there, I attended two major Seminaries before being ordained to the priesthood. I attended St. Vincent Seminary at Latrobe, Pa for my Pre-Theological Studies and finished my studies and formation down at St. Vincent Regional Seminary at Boynton Beach, Fl. I have a number of hobbies from painting, calligraphy, cooking, bee keeping, and sketching. I am so very happy to back here in Augusta, Ga. I was here eight summers ago as a Seminarian Intern serving St. Mary s community and it was a wonderful time! I want to thank Fr. Jerry Ragan and all my brother priests for a wonderful welcome. Fr. Jerry tells me that I will most likely be the last of a long line of Parochial Vicars to serve with him. I am humbled to know that Fr. Charlie Hughes was the first. Having lived with Fr. Charlie, I know he offers a great example to follow. And I look forward to serving our community family of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with our new pastor, Fr. Mark Ross when he arrives in August. Thank you so much and God Bless you all. In the Gospel we are invited by Christ to be afraid of those who can destroy the soul and the body, yet today we often find our fears focused on those who can destroy us materially. Many have ceased to believe heaven or the soul at all. My hope is that young people today once again are searching for meaning. Jesus invites us to a life that is truly strong and yet to a life that is the Cross! Do you think that there are times when you get too caught up in things, in the stuff you have or want to have? How can we as a family give greater witness to our faith by our words, by our actions, and our choices, by the way we live our lives.

As of the last report we received (6/6/17), 20.25% of our parishioners (494 families) have made a pledge to the Bishop s Annual Appeal. We have given $181,170 which is 77% of our target of $236,296. Our support of diocesan agencies and ministries is one way that we respond to God for all we have received.
