3 SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, 2019 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So, God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began His adult public life at His baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of His first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in His own day, nor is He even now. So, we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of His birth, His humility and openness before John the Baptist, His kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet, it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. TODAY S READINGS First Reading As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). THE WEDDING AT CANA JESUS FIRST MIRACLE Jewish weddings were steeped in tradition and ritual. One of the customs was providing an extravagant feast for guests. Something went wrong at this particular wedding, however, because they ran out of wine early. In that culture, such a miscalculation would have been a great humiliation for the bride and groom. Running out of wine would bring dishonor upon the family name. When the wine ran out at the wedding in Cana that Mary, Jesus, and His first few disciples were attending, Mary turned to Jesus and said: "They have no more wine." "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever He tells you." (John 2:3-5) Nearby were six stone jars filled with water used for ceremonial washing. Jews cleansed their hands, cups, and vessels with water before meals. Each large pot held from 20 to 30 gallons. Jesus told the servants to fill the jars with water. He ordered them to draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet, who was in charge of food and drink. The master was unaware of Jesus' turning the water in the jars into wine. The steward was astounded. He took the bride and groom aside and complimented them. Most couples served the best wine first, he said, then brought out cheaper wine after the guests had too much to drink and would not notice. "You have saved the best till now," he told them (John 2:10). By this miraculous sign, Jesus revealed His glory as the Son of God. His amazed disciples put their faith in Him. This miracle, showing Jesus' supernatural control over physical elements like water, marked the beginning of His public ministry. Like His other miracles, it benefited people in need. John referred to Jesus miracles as signs, indicators pointing to Jesus divinity. Jesus second sign, also performed in Cana, was the healing at a distance of a government official s son. In that miracle, the man believed through faith in Jesus before he saw the results, the attitude Jesus desired. Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter my home, but only say the word and my son will be healed. Wine was a common symbol of God s bounty and of spiritual joy. Not only did Jesus produce a large quantity of wine, but the quality of it astonished the banquet master. In the same way, Jesus pours His Spirit into us in abundance, giving us God's best. While it may seem insignificant, there is crucial symbolism in this first miracle of Jesus. It was not a coincidence that the water Jesus transformed came from jars used for ceremonial washing. The water signified the Jewish system of purification, and Jesus replaced it with pure wine, representing His spotless blood that would wash away our sins. Do whatever He tells you. Mary to the Servants at the Wedding in Cana

4 SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, 2019 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WHAT IS ORDINARY TIME? The Liturgical Calendar gives us a full picture of the Church year. It shows the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. Each season is highlighted in its appropriate color. We have just started what the Church refers to as Ordinary Time. There's nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time it s a time set aside for reflecting on and celebrating our call to follow Jesus day by day. Ordinary Time comprises the longest season of the Church year. This is the season when the great mysteries of salvation unfold in all their depth and richness. At this time, we explore, nuance by nuance, virtue by virtue, the facets of belonging to Jesus kingdom. The God who sent Jesus to save all of us from darkness and death is revealed in splendor. We return to using green vestments during Ordinary Time. Changing colors gives a sense of progress of faith through the Church s calendar. Green is new growth, evergreens, green grass, glistening emeralds, ripening pears. It suggests renewal, healing, fertility, peace, and harmony. The Church has a vigorous life past, present, and future. The Church calendar guides us throughout the year, taking us from season to season in an ongoing effort to form us into God s Kingdom here on Earth, and lead us to His Kingdom in Heaven. FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS JANUARY 27 th TO FEBRUARY 3 rd We need to make sure that none of our neighbors are ever turned away when they look to the Church for help. Timothy Cardinal Dolan Feeding Our Neighbors is a united effort to fight hunger. Sponsored by Catholic organizations throughout the Archdiocese of New York and managed by Catholic Charities, 100% of contributions to the campaign will support local food pantries that serve New Yorkers, non- Catholic and Catholic alike. Let us not ask, Are you Catholic? Let us ask instead, Are you hungry? Although we at St. Catharine s are committed to this important program throughout the year, we ask that everyone please make a special effort during this particular week when the entire Archdiocese is asked to work together. Please put your food items in the specially marked bins inside the doors of the Family Room. Thank you for your generosity and compassion. NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Next week s Second Collection will help offset our Archdiocesan assessment for the Catholic School System in New York. Thank you for your continued support of this monthly collection. THE STORY OF THE CONVERSION OF SAINT PAUL FEAST DAY JANUARY 25 th St. Paul s entire life can be explained in terms of one experience his meeting with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In an instant, he saw that all the zeal of his dynamic personality was being wasted, like the strength of a boxer swinging wildly. Perhaps he had never seen Jesus, but he had acquired a zealot s hatred of all Jesus stood for, as he began to harass the Church: entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment (Acts 8:3b). Now he himself was entered, possessed, all his energy harnessed to one goal being a slave of Christ in the ministry of reconciliation, an instrument to help others experience the one Savior. One sentence determined his theology: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting (Acts 9:5b). Jesus was mysteriously identified with people the loving group of people Saul (who became Paul) had been running down like criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysterious fulfillment of all he had been blindly pursuing. From then on, his only work was to present everyone perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of His power working within me (Colossians 1:28b-29). For our Gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and [with] much conviction (1 Thessalonians 1:5a). Paul s life became a tireless proclaiming and living out of the message of the cross: Christians die baptismally to sin and are buried with Christ; they are dead to all that is sinful and unredeemed in the world. They are made into a new creation, already sharing Christ s victory and someday to rise from the dead like Him. Through this Risen Christ the Father pours out the Spirit on them, making them completely new. So, Paul s great message to the world was: You are saved entirely by God, not by anything you can do. Saving faith is the gift of total, free, personal, and loving commitment to Christ, a commitment that then bears fruit in more works than the Law could ever contemplate. WHY PAUL? Why would Jesus select the likes of Paul? There were certainly other devoted followers of Jesus available in those early days of the Church followers ready to give their lives to proclaim Jesus Christ as Savior of the World. But, Jesus picked a Pharisee, known as Saul, saying, This man is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before Gentiles, Kings and Israelites (Acts 9:15). God selected this man who had a strong hatred of all Jesus stands for, a man who went into the house of Christians and dragging out men and women, then handed them over for imprisonment (Acts 8:3). This man became God s chosen instrument to spread the message of Jesus across the Middle East and parts of Europe. Certainly, our Lord works in mysterious ways.
