3 November 13, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Dear Parishioners: "You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name." This is not a pleasant prophecy. On the contrary, Jesus' somber words may strike us with a bit of fear and make us wonder if we will ever actually face such a tragic scenario. We are fortunate to live in a country where religious freedom is tolerated, and of course we hope that this continues to be the case. But the sad fact is that right now, there are Christians in other parts of the world who are living out the reality of these prophetic words. For these men, women, and children of faith, the name of Jesus truly is a cause of persecution and martyrdom. Let us imagine for a moment that the tables were turned. Suppose we were the ones suffering from the violent advances of anti-christian forces. Suppose we were the ones losing our homes, fleeing for our lives, tending to our wounded loved ones, or worse. Where would we look for help? To other Christians, most likely, to those who would sympathize with our commitments but who still had the resources to assist us. We ARE those other Christians. We are the ones who share a common faith with these suffering brothers and sisters on the other side of the globe. We are the ones with the resources to help them, even if it is just in a small way. Our prayers for their protection and peace cannot be underestimated, but neither can we dismiss the significance of contributing in any way possible to those organizations that are working on the front lines to assist the suffering Church throughout the world. May we all do what we can to bring relief to those who need it most. Yours is Christ Father Brian T. Bell, Pastor Middle School Youth! How are you going to get there? Shannon Hards, Director of Youth Ministry HOLY SEPULCHER will be selling a variety of beautiful handcrafted Olive Wood rosaries, crosses, nativity scenes and unique products next weekend November 19th & 20th. Your generosity will help Christians in the Holy Land so they can support their families. Christians in the Holy Land are a minority and are medium or low socioeconomic status. Faith Formation News High School Teens! Come and join us for the following Life Teen Events at St. Bernard s: Page 3 Sacrament classes are closed for the 2016/17 school year. This includes 2nd, 3rd, Confirmation and Heritage. All other classes, Kindergarten, First Grade, Fourth and Fifth Grades remain open all year. Please make sure your children are in class on time and picked up on time. Confirmation and First Communion for all third graders and above that are not being baptized at the Easter Vigil will be on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 2pm. This will be our service project for the semester. Please sign up at Life Teen so we can tell them how many volunteers we will have! 12/4 - "A Friend Indeed" (After the 11am Mass in the Teen Room) - What qualities do you look for in a friend? Do your friends help and support you? Why is it important to have supportive Catholic friends? 12/13 - "Christmas Party" (After the 11am Mass in the Teen Room) This will be our last Life Teen event for the Fall Semester. We are going to celebrate with Christmas games and festivities! Shannon Hards, Director of Youth Ministry TURKEY TUESDAY- November 22, 2016 Each year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the St. Vincent de Paul Society collects frozen turkeys, stuffing, canned vegetables and gravy, napkins, etc. at markets throughout the Valley. Our parish Conference will be at the Bashas Market on the corner of Thompson Peak Pkwy. & Bell Rd. to collect frozen turkeys and food items all day on Tuesday, November 22, The collection at Bashas will replenish the pantries at the downtown St. Vincent de Paul dining facility and at St. Catherine of Sienna. In addition, we will fill food boxes for residents of our Parish. The turkeys and food items collected on this one day number in the thousands and help the St. Vincent de Paul Society feed hungry people this holiday season.
