THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD After the Christmas celebrations, we come to the beginning of Jesus public ministry, which began with the Baptism of Jesus by John. Jesus is identified to us as a faithful servant, who will be obedient in carrying out the will of the Father. We are invited and challenged to look at Christ to discover the Father. Also, we are exhorted to listen to Him and respond favorably to His message of salvation. He is about to begin a mission, a journey that will take Him to Jerusalem to offer His life, His death on the cross, and resurrection. We are invited to follow Him. Are you ready for the journey? The Spirit of God will help us. Do not be afraid! New Parish App: Great tool for outreach/communication New Parish App Coming Soon! In the coming weeks Immaculate Conception Church will launch our own app for iphone and Android smart phones. This will allow us to better communicate with you throughout the week and keep you updated with relevant parish news or updates. The app is very well designed and very intuitive. It will be a great resource for parishioners by providing daily Mass readings, Catholic news and prayers, convenient prayer and Confession reminders, our bulletins and more. We hope for our new app to be a tool for fostering stronger parish life at Immaculate Conception Church and better engaging the New Evangelization. Please watch in the coming weeks for our official launch announcement. January is our Parish s month to supply basic needs to Catholic Charities Samaritan Center. Items sought are such things as toothbrushes & toothpaste, paper towels, toilet tissue, deodorant, powder, soap, shampoo, Kleenex, detergent, etc. There will be large blue bins at the main (middle) & by the parking lot entrance of the church for your donations. Thank you in advance for your help & support. Bins will remain until the 2nd week in February. A Notice from Catholic Charities Equal Rights for Farmworkers: Tens of thousands of farmworkers in New York milk cows, tend animals, and plant, prune, harvest and pack fruits and vegetables. They are the backbone of our state s multi-billion dollar agricultural industry. Despite their hard work, farmworkers are not treated equally in our labor laws. Unlike other workers they do not receive overtime pay or the same workers compensation or disability insurance coverage when hurt on the job. You can help right this wrong! In the coming weeks you ll have the opportunity to sign our Diocese-wide petition asking our legislature to change this law. Keep reading the weekly bulletin to learn more about this issue. YOUTH CORNER This week we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. When I ask people what does baptism do for us? they are very quick to respond it takes away original sin and makes us part of the church community. That answer is correct but not complete. If baptism washes away original sin and makes us part of a community then why was Jesus baptized? He was without sin and he drew a community to himself; so why was he baptized? Remember that after he was baptized, Jesus went out into the desert and was tempted. After that, performed his first miracle. You see, Jesus baptism was about his mission. He was baptized then went out to teach, preach and performed his miracles. So, our baptism isn t just about washing away sin and becoming part of the church. Both are important and baptism is necessary for our salvation. However, through our baptism we are called to be part of Christ s baptism and his mission; which is to bring the Good News to the world. We are to be his hands, feet and voice in our world which, honestly, is a hot mess. Our baptism isn t just something that happened a long time ago. It is something that we are all called to live out everyday. So, LIVE your baptismal call in his world as Christ asks of you and as ONLY YOU can do AROUND THE AREA/DIOCESE Save the Date! The 3rd Annual March for Life will take place on Friday, January 1pm to coincide with the 46th annual National March For Life in DC the world s largest pro-life event! The March will begin at the parish steps and proceed along Seneca Street. Plan to be part of this peaceful, prayerful witness to Life!
