2 MESSIAH MESSENGER Published by MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH Phone: address: October 17, 2018 VOL. 76 NO. 41 MESSIAH YOUTH Messiah s Youth ministries are off to a roaring start this year and we have a lot of things planned for the coming months. The only thing missing is you! Middle and High School youth are selling apple dumplings to raise money for a mission trip. This summer, the youth group will travel to South Carolina to help in the long-term disaster recovery projects in the wake of Hurricanes Florence and Michael. Each Apple Dumpling is $3 and will be ready on November 3. See a youth to order in person or call the church office if you need someone to come to you. 2nd Sunday Faith Night offers youth in grades K-12 opportunities for learning, fun, service, and fellowship. So far this year, the GLOW (K-2), BYG (3-6), Confirmation (6-8), and JOY (9-12) groups have teamed up to pack school kits for Lutheran World Relief and to make Veteran s Day gifts. The Confirmation class has a lot of fun and does not shy away from difficult faith questions. Of course, sometimes the Youth Group just needs an opportunity to have some fun. Our trip to Hallo-fun at Knoebel s was a blast. A very special thanks to the anonymous donor who left ride tickets in the office mail drop. You helped us have a great night! Messiah s youth ministries depend on the support of the congregation. Your gifts of time, talent, and money help this congregation provide the community s youth a safe place to have fun and learn about their faith. Thank you! Vicar Josh

4 The Library Corner Highlighted Books for the Week: Children/family - DVD Quigley's Village - Enjoy What You Have It's a rainy day in the Village and everyone is staying inside. Mr. Quigley and Trundle visit the children with their rainy day box filled with fun activities to chase away the blues. This DVD's theme is Contentment and is found in the Quigley's Village DVD section of our library. Adult - The Big Guy Upstairs - You, Him and How it all Works - If there is a God, what does He want with me? God feels so far away. How am I supposed to interact with Him? Does God really care about me and my life? Isn't God just angry all the time? How does God feel about me? How do I know God is listening? Maybe you can relate to some of these (or similar) questions. The answers are here--no religious jargon, no pretense, and no nonsense. Just simple, credible and engaging insights and true stories. Found in the Adult Non-fiction section of our library. Decorate your vehicle's trunk for TRUNK OR TREAT on Wednesday, October 31 (6 p.m. 8 p.m.) during South Williamsport's Trick or Treat night. Help "Pack the Parking Lot" with lots of fun and candy- filled vehicles for our community's trick or treaters who came by the hundreds last year! Welcome them to Messiah with simple children's, Halloween or fall-themed decor and treats! In the event of rain, we'll reschedule when South Williamsport reschedules! Donated items may be placed in the model ship in the church narthex. Please bring only gently uses items in good repair. No money will change hands bring what you, take what you need. Tell your friends and neighbors. Help Wanted! Set-up: Friday, November 9, 10 a.m.-noon. Trick or Treat for NGA: Please help the Newberry Branch of NGA (Needlework Guild of America) collect hygiene packs to shared equally with Children & Youth of Lycoming County, Expections/Pregnancy Care Center, Family Promise of Lycoming County and Shepherd of the Streets. Take a candy treat from the basket to enjoy. Then return the hygiene item listed on the candy corn label. Donations may be placed in the tub in the Narthex. Deadline to return items is November 4. 6 November 1 st is the completion date for the Dresses and Britches project for this year. Please finish any dresses and britches you are working on and turn in by that date or call to let me know about delays Thank you. Doris Butt. Barb and Doug Houseknecht will host a "Halloween Party" at their home, 518 Clinton Street, South Williamsport, for Messiah's Women of the ELCA on Tuesday, October 23rd, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Everyone planning to attend is asked to bring a dessert to share and also several wrapped "white elephant gifts" for Halloween Bingo, Bible Bingo, and just regular Bingo. A fun evening is planned! Messiah's Women of the ELCA are in urgent need of cookies to be gifted to our college students and military personnel. The cookies will be packed in "Cookie Boxes" on Tuesday, November 27th, in Shaheen Hall and mailed the following day. All donations should be marked "For WELCA" and brought to the church kitchen on or before Sunday, November 25th, or brought to the November 27th WELCA meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m. Marge Wonderlich will lead Devotions for the business meeting; Carol and Marilyn Winter are hostesses. WELCA is requesting names and addresses of college students and military personnel for their annual cookie box event. Please contact the church office.
