n th January2011 Mary invites us to become blessings! Monthly message At the start of the new year we entrust everything to Mary Help of Christians, Mother of God and Mother of the Church. For our Association and for the Salesian Family this will be a special year, during which we ll be celebrating the International Congress of Mary Help of Christians in Czestochowa, at the shrine of the Black Madonna (3-6 August). Our path towards this meeting commits us to imitate Mary and to make her part of our every day life. Mary s presence and help become for us a blessing, because love is the key to understand Mary s life: the kind of love experienced until the very end, to the point of forgetting oneself, which pushes us to do the will of God with passionate commitment. And this is why every single one of Mary s actions, even the smallest one, is never banal but it is actually always filled with meaning. By behaving like Her and by being guided by Her, we will offer all our neighbours the testimony of a simple and joyful life, which despite human limitations and fragilities of our human condition, is coherent. By welcoming in us Mary s help and love, we will become for our brothers a blessing, and we will bring peace and joy: the kind of joy and peace which the world cannot give: meaning the joy of being loved by God, of being forgiven, the joy of the value, beauty and greatness of life. It is the joy of God s love which is lavished into our hearts; and it is also the joy of brotherly love among mankind, the kind of love we see shining in the Holy Family of Nazareth. Therefore, God gives us His peace and His joy to fill our hearts with them, and we in our turn must emanate, spread and radiate peace and joy. Where can we go and irradiate them? To the places where we live: first of all our families, then our workplace, our school Our Lady has her strategy: she puts weed killer where weeds are to be found. We are that weed-killer which Our Lady places in strategic places. Therefore, let us not complain dear friends, if we are the only ones in our families: we are that weed-killer, that salt, that yeast, that light in a world of darkness, lies and death. And then, let us bring God s holiness, his Light, his Goodness and Mercy and his good word everywhere: even in the street, to the bar, to places of entertainment. This is a beautiful plan for our life, it is the Christian revolution: this is the transformation of the world. The world goes on because there are many unknown people, who may even be despised, who are a blessing (wherever they find themselves living), and they bring peace. They are the weed- killers who prevent weeds from winning the day, they are the lights which prevent darkness from taking possession of the world. Then other people will ask: How can your joy be explained? Where do you find the strength to win against selfishness and comfort? Who teaches you understanding, devotion and dedication to your neighbour? This is then the moment to reveal our life s secret, to tell people about our experience of God and to address them an invitation: Come and see. Let s commit joyfully and pledge ourselves to live this Salesian month! May the feast of our Father Don Bosco grant us special graces, in particular his apostolic and educational passion for the salvation of the youth, with the powerful and maternal help of Mary Help of Christians. 2 Let us pray to Mary Help of Christians Towards Czestochowa 5. Mary is the reliable Mother (don Roberto Carelli) Maternal love is a very concrete form of love. God is its life, its origin, its universal fullness; the mother is the womb of life, its beginning, it means giving oneself for another person. God is Love, the mother is the body of love. In Mary, the Word of God has taken upon himself a man s body and soul in a very special way. Mary is the Ark of the Covenant, the holy ground of God, the heart of the Church. Entrusting oneself to Mary with child-like love means entrusting oneself to a very concrete form of love, which teaches us about the concreteness of love. In the same way as and even more than every mother, Mary s love not only never grows tired, it is constant, trustworthy, attentive, caring in offering what is for the children s own good, but also careful in welcoming their requests, and careful to perceive any changes in their heart, their wellbeing and their sadness, ready to distinguish real needs from what are only tantrums. The teachings of the Church speak about Mary s maternity in relation to us by stressing the maternal traits of Mary s cooperation to our supernatural generation, a generation which required much more delicate and energetic care compared to natural maternity. Let us think about how man, if left to himself, without a life of prayer or with a weak desire for Heaven, whose thoughts are more oriented to earth, not to the resurrection but to survival, how his actions are not oriented to Heaven but are dictated by earthly goals, how such a man constantly runs the risk of feeling the earth to be close and Heaven to be far away. Mary then, who is the Door of Heaven, but also the Queen of Heaven, who was taken up to Heaven in body and soul, teaches Christians to lift their eyes up to things related to Heaven and away from earth. She frees us from the slavery of food which perishes, and teaches us to look for the food of eternal life, the one that can really feed our hunger for life, love and happiness. In the Church s most recent documents Mary s maternity is concretely fulfilled through her never- ending prayer, her attentive love, and her sublime example: Mary s maternal action in the history of grace is constant and never ending and her constant intervention continues to obtain for us the gifts which ensure our salvation. (LG 62). Even now, from Heaven, She continues to fulfil her maternal function, cooperating to the birth and to the development of divine life in the souls of all the redeemed ones. She cooperates first of all through her never- ending prayers, inspired by her ardent love. She also acts on our souls through the irreplaceable influence of the example of her life, because, as the saying goes: words have the power to move us, example has the power to draw us in. (SM I,1-3). The Church constantly experiences this through the countless ways in which Mary s presence shows us her maternal care in accordance with divine providence: through simple inspirations or memorable apparitions, Our Lady encourages and accompanies conversions and foundations, the building of churches and the setting up of works of charity. Above everything else we need to remember that Christian concreteness translates as holiness, divine life in human form, a path of conversion and justification, purification and holiness, a path of death and resurrection, cross and joy. For this reason, Mary s maternity is exemplified in particular in generating and accompanying saints. With unparalleled words, Grignon, when discussing Mary s relations with the Spirit, explains that God s salvific work takes advantage of Mary s maternal contribution to the maximum: The Spirit wants to shape himself in Mary and through Mary, and therefore he says I took root in an honoured people (Sir 24,13): My beloved and my bride, take root with all your virtues among my honoured people, so that they may grow in virtue and grace. I am so happy about you, who used to live on this earth exercising the highest virtues, that I desire to find you once again on earth, without you having to leave Heaven When Mary takes root in a man s soul, she produces the kind of wonders which she alone could ever be capable of, because she alone is the fruitful Virgin who did not have and will never have equals in purity and fruitfulness She shaped the world s greatest saints who will live until the end of the world When the Holy Spirit, her groom, finds Mary in a man s soul, he flies to this soul and communicates himself to him: the more room this soul leaves for his bride, the more abundantly the Spirit communicates himself to him. Mary received from God great command on the souls of the chosen ones.by giving her power over His own Son, God gave him to her above his adoptive children, not only his body but also his soul. The spiritual aim of this meditation is that of entrusting ourselves to Mary, in order to learn from her the beauty of holiness and the concrete steps which help to develop it and communicate it to others. MATERNITY AND REALITY Don Bosco had a privileged experience of Mary s presence as Mother and Teacher, an experience which he left his children and the whole Salesian Family as a legacy. He understood perfectly well how much Mary Help of 2

Christians had inspired and guided him in his vocation and his mission, how she had protected him in his trials and tribulations, how she had not only helped him, but had also been the main protagonist of his educational work. Don Bosco interprets Mary s regality not in a static sense but in a dynamic one, not only as a sign of dignity but as charity and energy: She is seated, which literally means to be close to him to assist him Mary helps us during the course of our life, at the moment of our death and after death! It is not a coincidence that Don Bosco will make assistance central to his educational method for young people. When we contemplate Mary as the Queen, never stops being the Mother: she is both Mother and Queen, therefore her power of personal intervention has no equal. The realism of Mary s maternal presence in Don Bosco expressed itself through familiarity, which is the indelible spiritual legacy and a distinctive trait of the Salesian spirituality. Familiarity in the Salesian homes and families in which Don Bosco s spirit is alive, makes it possible for all things related to God to be familiar rather than unknown, it makes them not difficult but easy, it doesn t stress its demanding features but rather its loving ones, and this happens thanks to Mary s maternal power: With Don Bosco there is no need to cross over any bridge, as in the Salesian s familiar environment God, Jesus and the Holy Virgin are at our fingertips! The Salesian familiar s environment is what it is because it does not stop at man, but includes the supernatural; because it has made familiar the whole Christian religion, morals and the sacraments; because the whole supernatural reality is made more maternal by Holy Mary Help of Christians. Today we need to acknowledge that the Marian dimension of the Salesian spirituality needs to be relaunched with great force. In a culture which has taught us to think and act as if God did not exist, to overestimate our free initiative forgetting the primacy of grace, to rely on our own means rather than on Providence, to plan for our work to be done by God, rather than ourselves doing what He has planned for us. The act of entrusting ourselves to Mary and to her maternal heart is the safest antidote to relaunch any spiritual, pastoral and educational initiative, moving on from the logic of earthly efficiency to that of evangelical efficiency. Fr Viganò, reflecting on the Marian dimension of the Salesian vocation and recalling Don Bosco s experience who, thanks to Mary saw what miracles are, clearly states that: We need to delve into the realism of Mary s spiritual maternity There will be no revival for us without Mary Help of Christians; on the other hand with her maternal help, we will see the effect of rebirth grow miraculously! MATERNITY AND HOLINESS Don Bosco s familiarity with Mary is rooted in his personal experience, in the education he received at home, in his vocation inspired by a dream, in the growth of his holiness. Before personally entrusting himself to Mary, he was entrusted to her by his mother Margherita. One day she called him and said the following memorable words: My little John, when you came into this world I consecrated you to the blessed Virgin; when you began your studies I recommended to you the devotion to this Mother of ours; now I recommend you to be all hers; love Mary s devotees and if one day you will become a priest, make sure you always recommend and spread the devotion to Mary. Which Don Bosco did, with trust and affection which went beyond all expectations. This was also because, in the mystery of his vocation and mission, Jesus entrusted him to Mary and encouraged him to entrust himself to her as a Mother and as a Teacher. In the dream he had when he was 9 years old, and then in the following ones at 16 and then again at the seminary, the act of entrusting to Mary takes on the concrete characteristics of the acquisition of knowledge, fortitude, counsel: I will give you the Teacher under whose guidance you will become knowledgeable, and without whom all knowledge becomes foolishness Here little John: this whole flock I will entrust to your care Don t be afraid: I will assist you This is my Mother: take counsel with her! Once he had become a profoundly Marian priest, he affectionately talked about Mary s maternal help in a vibrant and persuasive way: Mary wants us to put all our trust in her So far we ve walked on safe ground. We can t go wrong; it is Mary who is guiding us Mary has always been my guide! How good is Our Lady!... Holy Mary has always helped me and will continue to do so!...how Mary loves us!...mary loves us too much!...holy Mary is the founder and she will we the supporter of all our work Out Lady wants us to honour her with the title of Mary Help of Christians; the present times are so sad that we really need the Holy Virgin to help us protect and defend our Christian faith.. Don Bosco always tried to give his Marian heart to his children and to his whole spiritual family. Let us listen, meditate, prepare ourselves and utter the words which Don Bosco did not call neither consecration nor entrustment, but more straightforwardly and more affectionately the act which makes us her children. This phrase contains everything: adoration for God, the testament of the Golgotha, the desire to put oneself into John s shoes and to be 3

welcomed as children; there is a sense of our wretched condition as sinners, the desire to imitate the Mother s virtues, the actual handing over of oneself in terms of filial abandonment, the request for protection during our life as well as at the moment of our death, our eyes looking up to Heaven: My Jesus Christ, true God and true man, only son of God and of the holy Virgin, I acknowledge you and I adore you as my first and last destination. I beg you to renew in my favour that mysterious and loving testament which you made on the Cross, by giving the beloved apostle Saint John the quality and title of your Mother Mary s son. Tell her these words from me: Woman, here is your Son. Grant me the favour to belong to her as a son, and to have her as a Mother for my whole mortal life on this earth. Blessed Virgin Mary, my main Advocate and Mediator, I.., miserable sinner, the most unworthy and lowest of your servants, humbly prostrate myself in front of You, I entrust myself to your goodness and mercy, and filled with a burning desire to imitate your beautiful virtues, I proclaim you today my Mother, and I beg you to consider me as one of your dear and lucky children. I irrevocably give my whole self to you Please accept my offering, appreciate the trust with which I abandon myself into your arms. Grant me your maternal protection throughout my life, particularly at the hour of my death, so that once my soul is set free from the strings of the body, it may pass over this valley of tears and enjoy the eternal glory of the Kingdom of Heaven with you. Amen! MATERNITY AND FRUITFULNESS Mary s maternity is at the origin of ecclesial fruitfulness. As the Mother of grace and the cause of our joy, she has a special relationship with the Gospel and with evangelisation. By promoting devotion to Mary Help of Christians, Don Bosco clearly understood her ecclesial and not purely individual function : Mary is the Help of Christians not only because she helps Christians in their numerous needs relating to themselves or to their families, but especially because she protects and assists the Church in the midst of the dangers of the world, particularly when faith itself is under threat. For this reason, Fr Viganò rightly observes: Don Bosco added the title of Help of Christians to the one of Mother of the Church So it is through Mary that we find the mystery of the Church.. By looking at Her, we can see the living Church is her eyes that explain its mysteries. If we look carefully, there is then a deep connection between Mary s maternity and the work of evangelisation. The dynamism is identical: contemplata aliis tradere: communicating what we have contemplated! Just like the Mother experiences the deepest unity with the Son to then offer Him to the world, so the work of the Church consists essentially in welcoming the Gospel and transmitting it, in being evangelised and in evangelising. The Church is a Mother who behaves like the Mother: it is at the same time receptive and offering, it keeps everything in itself in order to hand everything to us. As a matter of fact, the joy of the Gospel intgrates itself if it spreads light on the heart and irradiates on all hearts, if it becomes infused and it is spread, if it is celebrated with devotion and proclaimed with courage. Just as Don Bosco used to do, whose zeal for the Gospel and for the salvation of souls was as great as the care her took in the liturgical celebrations and to his commitment to the moral education of the youth. In any case Don Bosco was the first to wonder how powerful Mary s supernatural intervention was in his work. Speaking about the building of the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians he used to repeat (without exaggerating) that it had all been her work, and that to each brick corresponded a favour granted by her! The story told by Don Bosco himself regarding the Marian origin of that temple, and which Mary Help of Christians considers her home and the centre from which to irradiate her glory, is really worth reading or reading once again. What comes across in Don Bosco s own experience is the logic of the Magnificat, that is to say, the idea of the joy and fruitfulness of faith: the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians was not built by relying on human initiative and resources, particularly of the rich and powerful, but only on the full confidence in God s providence and in Mary s intervention. In short, a temple entirely made up of grace and gratitude: Those who spoke about or heard people speaking about this sacred building, might wish to know where over half a million lira has been found. It is very difficult for me to answer this question, to myself and even more to others. I will therefore say that many people initially offered to take part in the project, but in practice they didn t. Some wealthy people, after realizing the necessity of such a building, promised generous donations, but most of them changed their mind and decided to donate their money elsewhere. It is true that some wealthy devotees had promised donations, but only when the time was right, meaning that they would have made donations once the building of the Basilica was well on its way. Thanks to the offerings of the Holy Father and of a few other people, the land was bought but not much else; therefore when the work was due to begin, 4

there was no money to be spent for such purpose. On one hand there was the certainty that that building was to be built for the glory of God, but on the other hand there was a total lack of funds. It then became clear that the Queen of Heaven did not want mortal bodies but real bodies, meaning that Mary s real devotees had to play their part in this holy venture, and Mary herself desired everyone to know she was also doing her part, and wanted everyone to know that since it was her work, She would build it: aedificavit sibi domum Maria I don t think anyone ever asked for her help and did not have their wish granted. Either a spiritual or a temporal favour was usually granted by the merciful Mother, the powerful Help of Christians Saint Bernard s words have therefore proven to be true: It is unknown for a person to address Mary with trust and not being answered. FOR PRAYER AND FOR LIFE I contemplate Mary in her holiness as a Mother: I imagine her filled with graces like the Angel saw her, I look at her in Nazareth as Jesus saw her, I imagine her among the Apostles, I receive her as a Mother who generated me and educates me to do good and to the concreteness of holiness. Am I a believer and am I self-sufficient? Who comes first in my heart: my ego or God? How do I face the worries and problems of life? Do I trust I can manage alone, or do I trust in God? How is my sense of Providence growing? Do I know that God is present and operates in history, that He listens and grants the wishes which I express with faith? How do I keep doubt and fear away from my prayer? Do I address Jesus and Mary with obedience and filial trust? Let us pray for the Salesian Family and all its groups, so that through a renewed and boundless trust in Mary, like Don Bosco, it may experience and spread the great works done by the Lord for those who trust in Him, and through a solid, hard working and brave faith, may contribute to the great venture of new evangelisation. Prayer for our persecuted brothers and sisters As the Association of Mary Help of Christians, together with Pope Benedict XVI, we maintain that religious freedom is an essential condition which guarantees the promotion of dignity for all people, which supports the building of peace and harmony among people. During the Day devoted to Peace, Pope Benedict XVI s speech on the theme Religious freedom: the way towards peace, stressed how Christians are currently the religious group which suffers the greatest persecution because of its faith. Together with all Christians world wide and with all men and women of good will, we feel extremely close to the Christians who have been killed or persecuted, and to the ones who are victims of violence and attacks Oh Mary Help of Christians, Mother blessed by the Saviour, Your help in favour of Christians is invaluable. For you heresies were defeated and the Church won against any pitfall For you families and individuals were freed and even protected from the greatest dangers Grant oh Mary, that my trust in you may never fade, So that through all my trials, I may experience that you are truly Help for the poor, defence for the persecuted, health for the sick, Consolation for the afflicted, shelter for the sinners and perseverance of the righteous (Saint John Bosco) 5

Family Chronicle Bookings are open for the VI International Congress of Mary Help of Christians (ANS Turin) Next August between 3rd and 6 th, the VI International Congress of Mary Help of Christians organized by the Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), will take place in Czestochova. The congress is open to all groups of the Salesian Family, and it is intended to promote and spread the values of entrustment to Mary, life, the family and of education and bookings are now officially open. The International Congress of the ADMA members has now become a regular event for the various communities of the Association around the world. Since 1988 there have been five of them: in Turin-Valdocco in 1988, on the occasion of the centenary of the death of Don Bosco; in Cochabamba (Bolivia) in 1995; in Seville (Spain) in 1999; in Turin-Valdocco in 2003 on the occasion of the coronation of Mary Help of Christians; and in Mexico City in 2007.The motto for this sixth Congress to be held at the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa will be Totus tuus, and by referring to Pope John Paul the second s great Marian devotion, it aims to renew the profound sense of belonging to Mary, which inspires all members of the Association. Marian devotion (specifically to Mary Help of Christians), is very much alive in the Salesian Family as it was inspired by Don Bosco himself, who by building the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin, and by spreading the prayer he dedicated to her, expressed the conviction that Mary inspires and supports the Salesian work and the Family which he funded. The promotion of the International Congresses of Mary Help of Christians is aimed at all groups of the Salesian Family who recognize in the devotion to her one of the charismatic features of the common Salesian spirit, and therefore a way of spreading devotion to Mary Help of Christians according to the spirit of Don Bosco. In preparation for the International Congress Fr Roberto Carelli, writing in the monthly online newsletter of the ADMA, invites all the members of the Salesian Family to model themselves on Mary, to be born of Mary and educated by Mary. It is possible to register for the VI International Congress of Mary Help of Christians by downloading the appropriate registration form in Italian, English, Spanish or Polish from the site dedicated to the event. ( ADMA - PANAMA On Saturday the 4 th December, during the pilgrimage which we go on as ADMA to the Virgin of Hope at the Shrine of the Valley of Media Luna in Colón, we joyfully started our path to Czestochowa, not wanting to loose sight of our final destination: eternal life. We are accompanied by the image of the Pilgrim Virgin Mary Help of Christians and uniting in prayer we ask for brotherhood, unity and conversion for our Association. Walking this path is not easy because we belong partly to God and partly to this world. However, I think that as we get closer to God, we gradually begin to look at this world from a distance, as it appears in the picture of the Shrine in Turin. (Xiomara). 6

LOMBARDY (ITALY) SPIRITUAL EXERCISES For the first time, between the 3d and the 5 th December 2010, spiritual exercises for ADMA s groups from Lombardy took place, and were held by Fr Pierluigi Cameroni. His presence was for us the first of many graces we experienced during those days, and all the groups present from Nave (BS), from Chiari (BS) and from Arese (MI), feel gratitude, and child-like affection towards Fr Pierluigi. During our meditation we reflected upon Saint Giovanni Bosco s Marian spirituality, the source of our vocation; we also reflected upon how to concretely live this spirituality in the Church, through Pope Benedict XVI s teaching as laymen and women co-responsible in their being and in their actions as God s people. In conclusion we discussed in detail ADMA s missionary and apostolic orientation through the Christmas message of 2011 of the Senior Rector. The exercises were a truly Marian experience. Not only because of the Rosaries recited, but rather because, (helped by an atmosphere of brotherhood, prayer and meditation), we wanted to model ourselves on Mary, by first of all becoming as humble as She is, emptying ourselves of everything that is not useful for our soul, in order to leave room for the only thing that is necessary, or rather to the only Person that is necessary: Her Son Jesus. During those days, as we aimed to imitate Mary, we were invited to become docile to God s Holy Will, to open all those closed doors, particularly that of or heart. Although uttered in a family -like and joyous atmosphere, Fr Pierluigi s words slowly penetrated our souls, leading us to seriously question our faith and our life, putting our certainties to the test. And how did we give consolation and peace to our hearts? By invoking Mary, with simplicity and affection, with children s hearts, by holding the hand She always holds out to us, by feeling she was always present as the Mother and Teacher, just as our beloved father Don Bosco did. (Alessandro and Laura). GELA (CL) ITALY The ADMA from the Parish of San Domenico Savio in Gela organised two wonderful events: on the 2d of December 2010 the act of entrusting to Mary Help of Christians on the part of the children took place. On the previous week, the young couples took part to the lecture held by Fr Calogero Di Gregorio. During the Eucharistic celebration the children s presentation took place, as the latter were lovingly welcomed by Don Lillo who blessed them and their parents, a particularly touching moment. The celebration ended with a collective prayer to Mary on the part of the parents, and with a moment of communion and brotherhood. There were 47 children. On the 9 th December 2010, 12 aspiring members expressed their commitment as they became new ADMA members. We all felt emotional and joyful for that totus tuus to Mary Help of Christians. (Luigina Ciaramella - President). 7

SAN JUAN (ARGENTINA) ECHOES FROM A NEW YEAR PARTY - Last night a lively meeting took place to mark the end of the year. As celebrations were going on, the presence of a big ADMA group, whose faces were showing joy as well as traces of melancholy went unnoticed. The group was made up of older women (grandmothers), a few men and young women. The group was accompanied by a dear Salesian priest, Fr Celestino Gonzales, who celebrate his golden jubilee five years ago: this means he has already devoted 55 years of his life to God and to his brothers. We cannot even imagine the feeling of emotion of a consecrated priest who holds a spiritual rucksack filled with spiritual sacrifices and offerings. And yet, to the eyes of the world, the only thing that stood out was his Salesian humility. This leads us to think about a terrible reality which occurs here in Argentina: the Salesian Congregation which supports us (at least in Argentina), is made up of many elderly priests. God s designs are mysterious and we must live through this moment in history by accompanying them with our fervent prayers. It seems that our role must be to watch over our children and grandchildren by praying and helping them as much as possible to keep the peace in the home, as well as promoting the Salesian Family through example and spreading the devotion to the Holy Sacrament and to Mary Help of Christians. At a time when society appears to be more divided, ADMA preaches peace and unity. At a time when society seems more violent ADMA looks for a way to calm things down with every possible means. At a time when society is pray to weakness and of an hedonistic life-style, ADMA looks back to a model of healthy and frugal life characterised by hard work. At a time when society is becoming more pagan, ADMA tries to cultivate the religious meaning of life. By following the Pope s wise advice, we understand that frequently our faith too has become sleepy, and we must wake up from this sleep and commit ourselves to a faith which moves mountains, in order to give the things of this world their proper importance. Even good people can feel tired: it can happen, but we must fight through example and prayer until the last moment of our life. Some of us could only pass on the example which was shown to us by our parents, but we haven t been able to keep our children from straying from the right path of faith. A hostile world and bad customs have been stronger and grownup children no longer want to listen to elderly people. These parcels should not be despised, but rather must be given to the Lord who is in the Tabernacle. He alone can move hearts and control time. If we add penance to prayer, we will fulfil the request made by the Blessed Virgin Mary. And this not only can be done but must be done! The meeting went in the right direction because we felt protected by the Virgin Mary s mantle, as well as by members of the Salesian Family. From the imaginary crib, the president distributed a gift to all ADMA members who were present.
