4 You ve Got Heart Disease Did you know your heart is the most important part of your body? You can t live unless your heart does its job If it s not beating, pumping blood to your other organs, you can t stay alive No exceptions Do you know what the Bible says about your heart? Before I tell you, use the box below to write or draw about the things you already know The #1 cause of death in the United States is heart DISEASE This happens when your heart stops working early because it s sick and every year over one million people die from this Of course we are only talking about the physical beating of your heart Science has one story, but the Bible has much more to say The Bible tells us of a heart disease of a slightly different kind Let s find out about the condition of the heart Read Jeremiah 17:9 and write or draw the verse in the box Now don t be mistaken Just because the Bible isn t talking about our physical heart, it doesn t mean we won t die from this kind of heart disease In fact, the Bible says 100% of all people on earth have this kind of heart disease and we will ALL die from it These two verses share the dreadful truth with us ead omans ho has sinned 6 KEEP THY HEART WEEK 1

5 ead omans hat is the penalty for sin e have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of od That s our heart disease And we have a certain punishment for our sinful heart death But, I ve got some really good news As you saw in the second half of omans, od has a rescue plan to fi our disease A person with physical heart disease has a surgery called open heart surgery If the doctor catches the problem in time, he or she can save the life of a person with this surgery Did you know that God, the great Physician, also does open heart surgery? Not only that, He saves the person s life every single time Read Ezekiel 36:26 and tell about this surgery below Do you know what is required for us to have this open heart surgery? Read Romans 10:9 and talk about this with your parents There are three steps to being saved from the penalty of sin and receiving the new heart and life od promises e must A T we are sinners, BELIEVE Jesus Christ died to save us from our sins, and then TURN from our past life to follow Him Color in the words below as you tell your parents what these steps are Before we learn anything else about our heart, I need to ask you have you had the surgery? Are you saved from the penalty of sin? 6 The Heart Murmur Have you ever heard of a heart murmur? It s an unusual sound heard between heartbeats and it often means there is much bigger underlying heart trouble The first enemy of our heart we are going to discuss is the murmur This is the dangerous sound of complaining or grumbling And like the heart murmur, it leads straight to deadly heart disease Let s look at Exodus 16:3 and see what the problem really is In this verse, how are the Israelites feeling? This happened after God had delivered them out of slavery in Egypt and brought them safely through the waters of the Red Sea Can you picture them sitting around the campfire complaining about the food eriously It s easy to be hard on them, but we must admit we do the same thing God provides richly for us and we ust complain and grumble about the flavor ead ohn hat did esus say ead hilippians Again, what is the command we find here f something is mentioned once in the ible we should listen hen it s mentioned over and over again, we can be sure it s on purpose This grumbling and complaining leads down a path you don t want to travel KEEP THY HEART WEEK 2 16

7 Do you know what ultimately happened to the Israelites? Read Psalm 106:24-26 Illustrate each step of the path by the words below complaining (vs 25) (vs 24) discontentment disobedience (vs 25) lack of (vs 24) faith x Their grumbling and complaining led to discontentment over what God was providing, which led to no faith It was a quick jump from complaining to disobedience, and that disobedience led to punishment At my house, if you complain or grumble about doing a chore, you get another one My kids think this is pretty harsh, but imagine if I gave them 40 more chores or 40 years of more chores! ead roverbs hy does od punish us List two words describing why 1 2 The Bible says the Lord disciplines those He loves because He delights in them One thing we need to know about God is He doesn t punish us with a wicked intent He doesn t sit in heaven and tilt His head back with an evil laugh when He watches us suffer the consequences of our choices Know that He punishes because He loves us and wants us to grow e can only do that if we learn the lesson If we want to protect our heart, we must keep complaining and grumbling out! You might guess it s your brain because it tells you when to breathe You might guess your skin because it holds everything together ut you d be wrong on both counts ith the help of machines and medicines, you can actually stay alive without both of those organs working properly But you can t live unless your heart does its job This is why it s the most vital organ in your body If it s not beating, pumping blood to your other organs, you can t stay alive No exceptions How do you think this relates to God s view of the heart?
