2 THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Stewardship, A Way of Life Tithing God s Plan for Giving Biblically a tithe means 10%. All are asked to consider tithing and return 10% of our income to the Lord (5% to the parish, 5% to your favorite charity). The spiritual practice of tithing disposes us to make God first in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the tithe, but the tither, not the gift, but the giver for God! JANUARY 13, 2019 In Pew Collection $10, (From 302 Households) Loose Cash $ Online Giving $ 5, (From 56 Households) Total Collection $16, January 14, 2018 $15, Currently, we have 1803 households St. Paul tells us that God has blessed each of us for a reason. How has God blessed you? Are you using your gifts according to God s plan? How are you helping to build God s kingdom here on earth? Remember that if you don t do the work God planned for you, no one else can do it. Live the life God has intended for you, feel His love, peace and joy! PLEASE REMEMBER GOOD SHEPHERD IN YOUR WILL Tuition Angel Weekend As Sunday, January 27, begins Catholic Schools Week, please consider a gift to the Good Shepherd Tuition Angel Program. Many Good Shepherd families struggle with the financial means to afford a Catholic education. The Tuition Angel Program enables the parish to provide funds to assist these families. Special Tuition Angel envelopes will be displayed in all of the church narthexes at the Masses next weekend. Many thanks to those who will use the Angel envelope. Simply drop it in the collection basket on any weekend or return it to the Parish Office. Contributions in any amount are welcome and will be gratefully appreciated. Convenient Form Of Stewardship Online giving at Good Shepherd is an option for parishioners who may find this method of giving more convenient. Our website, contains the link to our online donation system, WeShare. Parishioners have the ability to make monthly recurring donations online. For example, instead of making 52 weekly donations, you may authorize twelve monthly recurring payments that are regularly charged to your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover) or transferred from your checking or savings account. Many Good Shepherd parishioners have found this to be a simpler and more consistent way of donating. Additionally, monthly recurring donations enable our parish to better plan and manage our finances. If you haven t enrolled in our online donation system and are interested, please visit the parish website and click on: BISHOP GAINER TO HOST LISTENING SESSION Bishop Gainer invites all members of the Good Shepherd Parish to attend a Listening Session on Monday, January 21, 2019, at Saint Joseph s Parish in Mechanicsburg, PA at 7:00 p.m. He encourages anyone with questions regarding the Grand Jury Report, the Diocese s response to abuse, our path forward, or any other questions or concerns to attend this session. The session will include opening remarks from Bishop Gainer and retired Pennsylvania State Police Capt. Janet McNeal, recently hired to oversee the youth protection efforts of the diocese. Following their brief remarks, the floor will be opened for questions. If you are unable to attend this Listening Session, but would still like to ask Bishop Gainer a question, please your question to: AskBishopGainer@hbgdiocese.org. Next follow the simple instructions to create a new account. A record of your contributions is kept on your account online, as well as posted to our records for tax purposes. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact the Parish Office at

4 THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SAINT JOHN NEPOMUCENE NEUMANN, FOURTH BISHOP OF PHILADELPHIA Neumann, a small individual at 5 2, arrived in Manhattan in June 1836 and was ordained three weeks later for the Diocese of New York. His first assignment was to provide pastoral care for a German-speaking immigrant community whose members were clearing forests for a settlement near Niagara Falls. After four years of working alone, Neumann joined the Redemptorists (Congregation for the Most Holy Redeemer, C.SS.R.), and took permanent vows in January Neumann spoke eight languages and became a popular preacher for many different immigrant communities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and New Jersey. Eventually, he was elected to head the Redemptorists in the United States. John Nepomucene Neumann was born in Bohemia in 1811 and named by his parents after the patron Saint of Bohemia. Neumann was known to be an exceptionally gifted seminarian, intellectually and spiritually. He studied at the University of Prague and traveled to the United States to be a missionary after his bishop decided to postpone ordinations due to an oversupply of priests in the diocese. In 1852 Neumann was appointed the fourth bishop of Philadelphia, a diocese that spanned the eastern half of Pennsylvania and the state of Delaware. As soon as he was ordained he embarked on an ambitious diocesan building campaign and was responsible for building over 100 parishes and 80 Catholic schools. He completed an unfinished cathedral and founded a new congregation of women, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, to help staff the increasingly crowded schools. Neumann also wrote two German catechisms that were approved by the First Plenary Council of Baltimore, the first of three national meetings of United States Catholic Bishops held in 1852 in Baltimore, Maryland. His Baltimore Catechisms were translated into other languages and widely used in the United States for the remainder of the 19th century. On January 5, 1862, Bishop Neumann collapsed on a Philadelphia street and died. He was 48 years old. Philadelphia s historical annals reveal that half the city s population attended his funeral, including the mayor, police and fire brigades, military battalions and a number of civic and Catholic societies and benevolent organizations. He was buried under the altar of the lower church of the Redemptorist parish, St. Peter. His burial site quickly became a shrine, attracting thousands of pilgrims. Saint John Nepomucene Neumann was canonized on June 17, His feast day is January 5. Children s Liturgy will start today January 20 th at the 9:30 a.m. Mass for Children in grades K-5. Children will be invited to come forward after the opening prayers before the Liturgy of the Word. During the Liturgy of the Word, Children will be in the chapel hearing the Word and a message at their level. They will pray the creed and appropriate intentions for children. At the Offertory children will return to the families in the Church. We recommend that you sit in the same section each week to allow the children to easily find you. We are still looking for adults who are cleared through the Diocese of Youth Protection Program to assist with this program in both leadership and assistance with youth. If you want to volunteer and are not cleared please contact Dr. Spahr at aspahr@gsschpa.org or to get assistance on getting cleared Lottery Update Thank you very much to the many parishioners who supported the Good Shepherd Lottery. Through your generous support we raised $22,000 for the Good Shepherd School program! Look for more opportunities to win in the future! Special thanks to parishioner, Mark Glessner, who manages this fundraiser for the parish. Father Ben has written a new book, one you definitely want to read! The Book is Titled: Love and the Practice of Virtue Relating to God. By: Rev. Benedict Faneye, OP Love is one word that could be subject to as many explanations as there are those willing to give. But, at the heart of LOVE is Virtue which admits of no duplicity. Love acknowledges the reality of the imperfect human condition, and it is in that acknowledgment that the individual realizes either that you are not alone in your struggle, or that you have been chosen to help others in their moments of need. Though one may not realize the responsibility, it is enormous and not something to be taken lightly. In the life of virtue, constancy is a necessity while striving to be a virtuous person. In other words, no wavering! Love and the Practice of Virtue portrays how by learning to be virtuous in our actions, we learn to love one another since this is the path to our true End, which is our eternal happiness. For one who learns to love and striving for the virtuous life, the challenge remains to be a reflection of the One who is the source of all Good. The Cost is $11 per copy. Books can be purchased in the Parish Office during normal business hours.
