Ephesians, Chapter One, Lesson Four HOPE IN CHRIST Ephesians 1:11-14 STIMULATE ** As our study together last week was drawing to a close, we observed six elements of our redemption that should cause us to desire to live in a manner worthy of the calling with which we have been called. Do you remember what those were? V. 6 - It was "freely bestowed", with His grace. V. 7 - It came at great cost, "through His blood". V. 7 - It provided total forgiveness! V. 8 - It was "lavished" upon us, abundantly! V. 9 - It gave us our understanding of the mystery. V.10 - It was planned before time. ** Did you place your 3 x 5 card in a prominent place so that you would be reminded of the particular element of your redemption you had chosen to focus on? If so, what impact did that have on your walk with Christ? It was very encouraging for me to see each day, as I began my day, the significant price that Jesus paid to buy me back from sin. It strengthened my walk moment by moment to be reminded of that wonderful truth! MOTIVATE ** Do you ever make promises? What are some motives that drive people to make those promises? Do you ever fail to fulfill them? Today in Part Three of Paul's long sentence of adoration towards God, we will learn why we can truly "Hope in Christ" and how the Holy Spirit plays a vital role in that blessed hope. Let's look at the passage together. Read passage (V.11-14) (Beginning with "In Him" from V.10) Opening Prayer INVESTIGATE Hope in Christ V.11 ** This verse, as we have seen, should begin with "In Him also we have obtained an inheritance" - Why is the "also" here? So far in our study of this marvelous letter we have seen that we: V.3 - were "Blessed...in Him" V.4 - were "chosen...in Him" V.5 - received our "adoption as sons through Him" V.7 - have our "redemption through His blood" The apostle is overwhelmed by all that we have "in Christ" and here adds that we have obtained our inheritance "also" in Him.
** The phrase "we have obtained an inheritance" translates a single compound word in the original Greek. eklerothemen - is an aorist passive indicative and was used in classical Greek of the day to speak of something in the future that was so certain, that it could not possibly fail to happen. The Greeks would speak of such an event as if it had already taken place. cf. Ephesians 2:6 "seated us with Him in the heavenly places" (an aorist active indicative) Even though we have not yet entered into that glorious experience, our dwelling eternally with the Lord is so certain that Paul speaks of it as if it has already taken place! The passive form of the verb here in our verse allows for two possible renderings, both of which are consistent with what Scripture says about inheritance. One rendering would be, "we have obtained an inheritance". The other is "we were made a heritage". **Does Scripture support the idea that Christ inherits us for His own? Absolutely yes! cf. John 6:37 & 39, 10:29, 17:24 and Malachi 3:17 The context of Paul's statement here in chapter one though strongly supports what we have received "in Christ" and that is why the translators chose to give preference to the rendering that they did. cf. 1Peter 1:3-4 ** In his very next phrase, Paul uses a word we have studied before, what is it? Predestined (from V.5) ** Do you recall its rich meaning? lit. "to mark out the boundaries or limits beforehand". It was all God's doing, without our effort! ** Our gracious God predestined our inheritance according to four things here in verse 11. What are they? 1) His purpose - This is God's own plan, He carries it out. It is eternally settled in His mind! 2) His work - energeo (we get our word energy from this Greek word) God not only purposes to give us an inheritance, He energizes it with His omnipotence or power. cf. Genesis18:14, Job 42:2 and Isaiah 26:4 3) His council - His resolution with reference to action. This is the Divine will as it displays itself in action. 4) His will - thelema, a desire that springs from the emotions. God's passionate love for us, His emotional nature, was governed by reason and deliberation as He fulfilled His plan of salvation on our behalf "in Christ". V.12 ** Having been granted so wonderful an inheritance by grace, through faith in Christ, what does verse 12 say was the reason for it all? To what end was it? That we "should be to the praise of His glory". ** Have we seen this exhortation to praise before in this letter? Absolutely! cf. V.6 with 1Corinthians 10:31 ** Who are the ones "who were the first to hope in Christ"? Paul, the other apostles, first generation Jewish believers who had placed their hope for salvation in the Messiah of God! cf. Luke 2:25-33
** In this expression of the salvation event, what is man's part, which is stated here in verse 12? We are the ones who "Hope in Christ"! Even though our ability to place our hope in Jesus Christ is all by God's grace, we are the ones who do it. cf. John 1:11-13 and John 11:25-26 V.13 ** So, is salvation limited just to those Jewish believers who were the first to "Hope in Christ"? Thankfully, no! "In Him, you also..." This includes the Ephesians, all of Asia Minor, the world and even us today! ** What phrase does Paul use in this verse to describe the gospel? "...the message of Truth, the gospel of your salvation..." ** What a wonderful title for the gospel! Does the world "listen to the message of Truth"? Yes they do, but for the most part they remain unsaved. ** Why is that? What is the difference between us and them? We listened and "...also believed..." The world is not interested in the Truth! cf. John 18:37-38, 1Corinthians 1:18 ** We have seen today that God has promised us an inheritance with Christ. How can we be sure that He will follow through with that promise? 1) Hebrews 6:18 "it is impossible for God to lie" 2) We were "sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise" ** What does it mean that we were sealed? 1) Authority - Esther 3:9-12 2) Security - Daniel 6: ) Ownership - 2Timothy 2:19 4) Finished transaction - Jeremiah 32:9-10 ** Are all Believers sealed with the Holy Spirit? Yes! This shows us the vital role that the third person of the Trinity plays in our eternal salvation. cf. Romans 8:9 V.14 ** Why does Paul call the Holy Spirit "a pledge of our inheritance"? The term meant an earnest, or down payment in advance for security. He is the first part of our inheritance, with all "spiritual blessing in the heavenly places" guaranteed to follow when we enter into the presence of Christ in heaven. ** According to verse 14, when God made this down payment what did He have in view? "the redemption of God's own possession"
** Have we seen this "view" expression before? Yes, V.10 - "with a view to an administration..." God revealed His will while looking to the fulfilling of all things in Christ, that we would be redeemed through His blood and then sealed us with the Holy Spirit, also while looking to our redemption. God's loving omniscience sees redemption's plan, over all, for our good and His glory. cf. Romans 8:28 ** Does this verse indicate anything about how valuable we are to God? Yes! We are His "own possession". cf. Titus 2:11-14 Footnote - V.13 of that passage reflects on the deity of Christ in that He is referred to as our "great God and Savior". ** Again, what is the goal of our marvelous inheritance? It is "to the praise of His glory". As seen in verse six and in verse twelve, this is now the third time we are reminded that the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) is to be praised! EXTRICATE ** What have you seen today about God's promise? 1) He promised us "our inheritance". 2) He planned it, independent of our wills. 3) He energized it, guarantying its success. 4) He desired it (willed it), out of His love. 5) He sealed it with the Holy Spirit. DELINEATE ** As kind of an overview of our last three studies together, let's look at what we have learned about our common salvation. 1) God chose us (V.4), we believed (V.13) 2) God lavished His grace upon us (V.8), we pour praise upon Him (V.6, 12 and 14) 3) God sealed us (V.13), we have assurance (V.14) EVALUATE ** Specifically out of today's passage, what new phrase did we see that describes the gospel? V.13 - "...the message of Truth..." ** How important is it that we, described as "God's own possession", share His message of Truth with the lost and dying world around us? It is vital. We need to be prepared for any opportunity that the Lord may place in our path. cf. 1Peter 3:15 "...sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence..."
ACTIVATE ** If we are those who truly "Hope in Christ" we should be excited about sharing the hope that is within us. Let's commit to the Lord now, in a time of silent prayer, that we will be alert this week for the opportunities He brings our way to share the good news of the gospel...the message of Truth! Closing prayer
