The Purpose Of The Holy Spirit a) To Introduce You To Christ Acts 19:1-2 1 It happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? So they said to him, We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit. (NKJV) 1. The Promise Of The Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:3 No man can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Ghost. (NKJV) b) To _Infuse You With Power Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Ghost has come upon you and you will be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the end of the earth. (NKJV) a) The _Old Testament Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants and My blessing on your offspring; (NKJV) Acts 3:6-7 6 Peter said, Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. (NKJV) c) To _Initiate Real Change Isaiah 59:21 As for Me, this is My covenant with them, says the Lord. My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants - from this time on and forever, says the Lord. (NIV) John 16:8 When the Holy Spirit has come, He will convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. (NKJV) d) To _Equip You For Serving Joel 2: It shall come to pass that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. (NKJV) b) The _New_ Testament Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto (following) repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry, He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire. (NKJV) John 14: I will pray the Father and He will give you another Comforter that He may abide with you forever - 17 the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him for He dwells with you and will be in you. (NKJV) Luke 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! (NKJV) 1 Corinthians 12: The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom though the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things distributing to each one individually as He wills. (NKJV) e) To _Offset_ Your Inadequacies Romans 8:26 The Spirit helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (NKJV) The big idea: There isn t anything spooky about the Holy Spirit.

4 Some may ask, Do you have to be filled with the Holy Ghost to get into heaven? and the answer is no. Romans 10:9 If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. (NKJV) Ghost Stories 1. The Promise Of The Holy Spirit 3

5 a) The Old Testament Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants and My blessing on your offspring; (NKJV) God spoke to His people through Isaiah to assure them that the day would come when the Holy Spirit would be poured out on them and their children. Isaiah 59:21 As for Me, this is My covenant with them, says the Lord. My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants - from this time on and forever, says the Lord. (NIV) God spoke through Isaiah to assure His people that there is a permanence to the Holy Spirit working in their lives and not just a visitation. 4

6 Joel 2: It shall come to pass that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. (NKJV) God spoke through Joel to assure His people that the Holy Spirit would one day be poured out on everyone regardless of gender, age or position. b) The New Testament Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry, He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire. (NKJV) God spoke through John the Baptist to assure His people that Jesus would be baptizing them with the Holy Ghost and with fire. 5

7 John 14: I will pray the Father and He will give you another Comforter that He may abide with you forever - 17 the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him for He dwells with you and will be in you. (NKJV) God spoke through Jesus to assure His people that the Holy Spirit would live in them and be with them forever. Luke 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! (NKJV) God spoke through Jesus to assure the disciples that He would give the gift of the Holy Spirit to anyone who asked Him. 6

8 Ghost Stories 2. The Purpose Of The Holy Spirit a) To Introduce You To Christ 1 Corinthians 12:3 No man can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Ghost. (NKJV) The Holy Spirit enables you to recognize and to confess that Jesus is your Lord. 7

9 Charles Spurgeon: A sinner can no more repent and believe without the Holy Spirit s aid than he can create a world. b) To Infuse You With Power Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Ghost has come upon you and you will be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the end of the earth. (NKJV) God is more interested in who you be than in what you do because if who you be ain t right then what you do ain t gonna be right! 8

(NKJV) The power of the Holy Spirit working through you can bring miracles to other people! E.M. Bounds: What the Church needs to-day is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use. 9

11 c) To Initiate Real Change John 16:8 When the Holy Spirit has come, He will convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. (NKJV) The Holy Spirit will show you what s wrong, what s right and then give you the ability to choose correctly. Samuel Chadwick: The root-trouble of the present distress is that the Church has more faith in the world and the flesh than in the Holy Ghost, and things will get no better till we get back to His realized presence and power. 10

(NKJV) The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to every Spirit-filled believer. 11

13 Hudson Taylor: Many Christians estimate difficulty in the light of their own resources, and thus they attempt very little and they always fail. All giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on His power and presence to be with them. e) To Offset Your Inadequacies Romans 8:26 The Spirit helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (NKJV) The Holy Spirit will pray through you when you don t have any idea what to pray. 12

14 Ephesians 5:18 Do not be drunk with wine but be filled with the Spirit. (NKJV) The Greek word translated as filled means to make full, to fill up, to fill to the full, to fill to the top so that nothing can be added, fill to the brim. the big idea There isn t anything spooky about the Holy Spirit. 13
