C Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! The Prayer of the Day is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: P Lord God, heavenly Father, we have come together today to remember your wonderful and mighty works, to give thanks to you and to seek your presence in our lives You have blessed us with gifts beyond counting You have blessed us with the gift of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ Fill our hearts with gratitude and praise By the power of your Holy Spirit, lead us to tell others of your mighty works so that they, too, will give thanks for the gift of salvation Hear our prayer in the name of Jesus our Savior Amen TL2 11
The Hymn of Praise is sung by the congregation to the tune St Thomas SM: O bless the Lord, my soul! Let all within me oin And aid my tongue to bless his name whose favors are divine He crowns thy life with love when ransomed from the grave; He that redeemed my soul from hell hath sov reign pow r to save His wondrous works and ways he made by Moses known, But sent the world his truth and grace by his beloved Son The Children s Message is delivered by the pastor or other worship leader: (Needed: a photo album or a digital frame or phone that can show photographs of family members, a birthday party, vacation trip or other events; a Bible) P What kinds of things do you remember? Can you remember what happened yesterday? Who wants to share something they did yesterday? (Let children answer) Who can tell us about something that you did two years ago? (Let children answer) Sometimes it s hard to remember what we did many years ago, even something special that we want to remember When we have special events to remember we often take pictures and save them to show to others (Show the album or photographs) Your family might have photographs in an album or you might share pictures on the computer or on a phone God has done many special things that we want to remember In a few minutes we are going to hear how God saved the people of Israel from their enemies We will listen to the story about Jesus healing a sick man We want to remember the story of Jesus love for us, how he died on the cross and rose from the dead Those things happened more than 2000 years ago! That s a long time to remember and there were no cameras then! How do we remember what God has done for us? I have a Bible here that tells us all about the things that God has done There are no photographs but there are wonderful, true stories of how God helped and saved his people Here in the Bible we learn about Jesus our Savior God inspired his servants to write down stories of his love and power That means God breathed into them the stories they were to write for the Bible Now we can remember and give thanks for 12 TL2
God s love and for his mighty works The verses from the psalm that we read earlier said: Tell of all his wondrous works Remember the wondrous works that he has done We can tell other people about God s love and power We can tell them how Jesus died for their sins, so they can believe in him too Let s say a prayer asking God to help us tell others about his wondrous works Let s pray: Lord God, thank you for giving us the Bible so we can remember your mighty works Help us to tell others about Jesus our Savior so that they can give thanks for your wondrous works! Amen The Old Testament Reading, Exodus 15:1-6, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: P `Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father s God, and I will exalt him The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name Pharaoh s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy The Epistle Reading, Philippians 1:3-11, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: P I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with oy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God TL2 13
The Gospel Reading, Luke 17:11-19, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: P On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us When he saw them he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests And as they went they were cleansed Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus feet, giving him thanks Now he was a Samaritan Then Jesus answered, Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? And he said to him, Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well The Sermon Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Nun Danket Alle Gott : Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, in whom his world reoices; Who from our mothers arms has blest us on our way With countless gifts of love and still is ours today Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, With ever oyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us And keep us in his grace and guide us when perplexed And free us from all ills in this world and the next The Sermon is delivered by the pastor: P Thank the Lord! How often have you heard that phrase? How often have you used it yourself? Sometimes the words are used carelessly, a thoughtless comment when a minor but nerve-racking situation turns out all right after all Sometimes the words are breathed out with sincere gratitude, an expression of profound relief a real prayer of thanks to God when we hear good news that we have hoped and prayed for: Thank the Lord! In our Old Testament reading we can almost hear the people of Israel breathing out a sincere and collective sigh of relief: Thank the Lord! Having recently escaped from 14 TL2
slavery in Egypt, the people found themselves standing at the edge of the Red Sea water in front of them and Pharaoh s army behind them and nowhere to go They cried out in fear They wished they could go back to Egypt They would be slaves again, but at least they would be alive No one was breathing out the words Thank the Lord! at that moment Then the Lord who set them free once again went to battle for them He opened a way through the sea Water rose up like walls on either side of them and the people of Israel walked through without so much as a splash When Pharaoh s chariots and soldiers tried to follow, they mired down in the mud and drowned when the water returned to its place The people of Israel did more than breath a prayer of thanks They sang a song of the Lord s victory: I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation Thank the Lord! The ten lepers in our Gospel story were not singing or breathing prayers of thanks As surely as Israel had been trapped, the lepers were caught, surrounded by sickness and reection on one side and by death on the other They stood separated by a sea of hopelessness from their homes and work and families The ten lepers stood on their shore and cried out to Jesus for mercy The Lord went to battle for them, sending them on their way to the priests to prove their healing and health By faith they passed through a sea of illness and in going they were cleansed But only one remembered to turn in gratitude on the other shore, returning to give thanks for his healing Thank the Lord! We re stuck on a dangerous shoreline too Our sinful desires leave us lost and mired in guilt The pressures of the world and its temptations push against us Satan stands ever ready to lure us back into slavery with his traps and tricks Like the people of Israel, we are all too eager to return to that slavery We are surrounded with nowhere to go But our Lord went to battle for us and opened the way for us by his death on the cross Jesus passed safely through the temptations of Satan and the world He remained steadfastly obedient to his Father s will, even to death on the cross Jesus passed through death and on the third day came alive again, defeating the enemies that stood against us By faith in Jesus name, we, too, pass safely through the sea while our enemies sin, death and the devil are drowned in a flood of baptismal waters Thank the Lord! Israel stood on the shore and sang a song of praise We can make that song our own: I will sing to the Lord for he has triumphed gloriously he has become TL2 15
my salvation! In fact, in the book of Revelation there is a picture, a vision of the future, of all the saints, of you and me, standing beside a crystal sea, singing the song of Moses and of the Lamb: Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God, the Almighty! But now, until we stand on the shore of that crystal sea, we breathe the prayer, Thank the Lord! In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul gives thanks to God for his fellow saints Look around you now These are your fellow saints, your partners in the Gospel These are the people who have passed with you through the baptismal waters and stand safe on the shore, set free by the blood of Christ One leper who was healed by Jesus returned and fell at his feet to thank the Lord Today we fall at the feet of Jesus to give thanks But then we go out into the world, to our work, to our families, and put our thanksgiving into action We pray, Thank the Lord, and give to those in need We pray, Thank the Lord, and put the needs of others ahead of our own We pray, Thank the Lord, and witness to the good news of salvation Redeemed and forgiven, we have a song of thanksgiving to sing as we work: The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation Thank the Lord! The Hymn of Response is sung by the congregation to the tune Nun Danket Alle Gott : All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven, The one eternal God, whom earth and heav n adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore The Offering is collected at this time The Prayers are offered: P Lord of our salvation, we give you thanks and praise for the countless blessings we receive from your hand, the blessings of home and family, food and shelter, work and friends C Teach us to be truly thankful, not only on this day, but every day P Lord of our salvation, we give you thanks and praise for defeating our enemies of sin, death and the devil and bringing us safely into your kingdom 16 TL2
C Help us to speak freely of your love for us and of the forgiveness and salvation we have in your name P Lord of our salvation, we pray for those who find it difficult to give thanks, those who are surrounded by illness and worry, by fear and guilt, especially for and for all those we name in our hearts C Give us opportunities to show our gratitude to you by serving those who need to experience your love through our comfort and help P Lord of our salvation, teach us to sing with all the saints: The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation! C Thank the Lord! Amen The Lord s Prayer is spoken in unison at this time Holy Communion, if offered, occurs here, according to local custom The Benediction is spoken by the pastor: P The Lord of all goodness bless you and keep you The Lord pour his riches upon you and grant you his plenteous presence The Lord be gracious unto you and look upon you with favor The Lord fill you with abundant bounty and grant you + peace Amen The Closing Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Wie Lieblich Ist Der Maien D: Sing to the Lord of harvest, sing songs of love and praise; With oyful hearts and voices your alleluias raise By him the rolling seasons in fruitful order move; Sing to the Lord of harvest a oyous song of love Bring to this sacred altar the gifts his goodness gave, The golden sheaves of harvest, the souls Christ died to save Your hearts lay down before him when at his feet you fall, And with your lives adore him who gave his life for all TL2 17
