2 Timothy 3:10-17 Continue in the things you have learned by example and in the Holy Scriptures Michael Silva / Sep 24, 2017 Opening: Joke: Science teacher was teaching on the attributes of water Teacher: What is the formula for water? Student: H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O Teacher: That's not what I taught you. Student: But you said the formula for water was...h to O. - In our passage today, we are challenged to be good students of the Word. Transition/Intro: 1. We are continuing our study in 2 Timothy, the last letter Paul wrote before being put to death for his faith. 2. Key Themes: Faithfulness despite suffering. Holding fast to the Scriptures. Preaching the Gospel. Fulfilling your ministry. 3. Our passage today could be summarized in this statement Continue in the things you have learned by example and in the Holy Scriptures. a) We need to continue as students of the Word. Let's read our passage: 2 Timothy 3:10-17 (NKJV) i And Pray 1. In our passage last week Paul challenged Timothy and you and me to: Be on guard in these perilous days. a) Continue to build on these, Paul writes 2 Timothy 3:10 10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 1. Paul continues by contrasting the perverse false teachers and followers in the preceding verses with his own life of faith.

2. The words carefully followed comes from one Greek word παρακολουθέω [parakoloutheo /par ak ol oo theh o/] and it means to follow one as to be always by his side. a) Like a good faithful dog. No matter where you go in the house, they are by your side. That s the idea behind carefully followed. i) But it doesn t just speak of presence, but also understanding. ii) A dog is present but doesn t necessarily understand. iii) But Timothy stuck with Paul and stuck to Paul s teachings and example with full awareness and understanding. 3. What is it that Timothy carefully followed? a) doctrine Paul s teachings. i) Doctrine is important, it helps to explain our faith and what we believe. b) manner of life conduct, way of life, example in action. That which can be seen by others. i) I have found that my Manner of Life has opened many doors for me to share my faith. (1) Iraqi Translator. c) purpose direction; Paul s life was going somewhere. i) As Christians we have purpose and our lives are going somewhere. ii) INTERESTING This word is also translated as shewbread (showbread). (1) In the Tabernacle/Temple there stood the Table of Showbread and on it 12 fresh loaves were placed each Sabbath, one loaf for each of the 12 tribes of Israel. (2) The next week the priests would bake 12 new loaves and they would eat the week-old bread in the Holy Place. (3) The table and the bread were a picture of God s willingness to fellowship and communion with man. It was like an invitation to share a meal, an extension of friendship. Eating together often is an act of fellowship. God was willing for man to enter into His presence to fellowship with Him, and this invitation was always open. ii (4) Why is this important to know? Because our purpose is connected to Jesus, who is the bread of life (John 6:35). (5) If you are trying to pursue your purpose apart from Jesus you will be like a PB&J without the bread you ll have nothing to hold you together. d) faith walking by faith leads to faithfulness. e) longsuffering patience under pressure. f) love Agape, self-sacrificing love. Page 2

g) perseverance endurance, steadfastness. Not easily giving up. 4. Making it personal: How are you doing in each of these areas? Are you carefully following in these areas as well? If not, what can you start doing differently? 2 Timothy 3:11 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 1. persecutions The external difficulties that aimed at us as believers. 2. afflictions or pain, is what s experienced internally from the persecutions. a) I am afflicted because I am persecuted. 3. Paul then speaks of his persecutions during his First Missionary Journey. a) At Antioch Paul and Barnabas were expelled from the region by a group of Jews who adamantly opposed them. (Acts 13:50) b) These same Jews followed Paul and Barnabas to Iconium where they stirred up the local population against Paul and Barnabas to abuse and stone them so the two had to flee to Lystra. (14:5) c) The hostile Jews finally got their hands on Paul in Lystra, where they stoned him and drug him out of the city supposing him to be dead. (14:19) 4. Though Paul endured persecutions and afflictions, notice Paul declares And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 2 Timothy 3:12 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 1. As believers, you can be assured that you will suffer persecution at some point in time. a) Some people suffer because of their choices and lack of maturity, not because they are of the faith. b) Some people suffer because they look for trouble. c) But true believers will suffer persecution simply because of their faith. i) If the world has rejected Christ, there will be times when they will also reject you too! 2. John MacArthur, Self-centered Christians who serve the Lord halfheartedly seldom have to pay a price for their faith. They are of little threat to Satan s work because they are of little benefit to Christ s. a) Let s make it our aim to serve Him and to be great benefit to Him. Page 3

b) 2 Corinthians 12:10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Timothy 3:13 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 1. It s not going to get better. There will be a decline leading up to the return of Christ. a) Things need to grow worse in order for the Anti-Christ to be able to come in and deceive all the people of the world into following him. 2 Timothy 3: But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 1. How are we to respond in the face of growing persecutions? a) continue in the things we have learned. b) Don t forget the Lord or turn away from Him. Turn to Him. Stick close with Him. 2. From childhood refers to Timothy s godly grandmother and mother Lois and Eunice and all they had taught him. a) This highlights the importance of being around others that you can learn from like Timothy did with his family. b) LEARNING BY EXAMPLE. i) Be an example to others, both Christian and non. ii) Find an example. 3. Making it personal: Timothy had Paul, who do you have? 2 Timothy 3: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 1. All Scripture, not some, or most ALL is given by inspiration of God. Page 4

a) The word Scripture included the Old Testament and the New Testament writings that God inspired that would be included in our Bibles. 2. The Bible is profitable for a) doctrine Teaching others. b) reproof rebuking, identifying that which is wrong. c) correction setting things right like a broken bone. i) Some teachers will only tell you what you did wrong. ii) The good teachers will show you how to fix your mistake. iii) The Bible is a good teacher who tells you how to fix your mistakes. iv) Joke: Stressing the importance of a good vocabulary, the teacher told her young charges, "Use a word ten times, and it shall be yours for life." (1) From somewhere in the back of the room, came a small male voice chanting, "Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda." d) The Bible is also profitable for instruction in righteousness This is the right way of living for all Christians. 3. I can t emphasize enough the importance of the Scriptures in our lives. a) Read: Psalm 19: Timothy 3:17 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 1. Homer Kent, Though [the title man of God] was usually reserved for prophets in the Old Testament, it belongs to all Christians. Such a designation places great responsibility upon the believer. To fulfill it, he needs to be fully equipped for the life before him. Such complete equipment is found in the Word of God. It is our armor and our weapon to meet the declension of evil days. 2. To be complete means that the light of the Bible is revealing and providing everything I need in my Christian life. a) It reveals that I am a sinner. i) It provides instruction on how to be forgiven and saved from my sin. b) It reveals that I am justified by faith. Page 5

i) It provides instruction on how to walk by faith. c) It reveals the true nature of God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit. i) It provides instruction on how to have communion and relationship with the triune God. d) It reveals many things i) It provides instruction on how to respond to that which is exposed by the Light. 3. The more time you spend reading and meditating upon the Word, the more answers you find in it. a) How s your personal devotion time with the Lord going? b) What are you reading? i) Are you reading from the Word itself, or are you just reading someone else s thoughts and comments on the Word? ii) Devotionals and commentaries are good, they can be insightful, but they can also be the middle man standing between you and the Lord. iii) James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. iv) It doesn t say draw near to commentators and popular devotional writers, draw near to Him! v) In what ways can you draw near to Him in greater ways this week? Conclusion: What s the big take away from this passage? 1. Continue in the things you have learned by example and in the Holy Scriptures. 2. Lean into the Scriptures and learn from them so that you will be complete and equipped for every good work. Invitation: Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Benediction: 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; Page 6
