W ELCOME to this Service of Worship at The First Congregational Church. Today is Harvest Sunday! On this Sunday, we continue to give thanks for all of the ways God blesses us. Today, in particular, we gather food, a portion of God s gift to us, to share with brothers and sisters in our community. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices. *All who are able please stand Seating of latecomers PRELUDE Nimrod (from Enigma Variations) CALL TO COMMUNITY Please sign and pass the red book. Jayson Engquist, guest organist Edward Elgar Dr. David D. Young PRAISING GOD CALL TO WORSHIP * OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 461 OPENING PRAYER (In Unison) Eternal One, source of all life and all bounty, be with us this Harvest Sunday as we open ourselves to your love and your wholeness. Fill us with your compassionate spirit so that we can serve your world into which we have been born, and to which you call us. Help us to recall that it is your breath that flows through us, your breath of creative love. Help us to affirm that love, a love which your Son came to help us know and understand, amid the everyday places that you lead us. At home, in town, with family and friends, along the way, at work and at play, let us show forth your love. And as we do so, help us to remember that love and justice are not words just found in our Bibles, but to be found in our lives as we share your love and show forth our praise. Amen.

CONFESSING TO GOD CALL TO CONFESSION Rev. Avery C. Manchester PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of Creation, we confess our casual handling of our life s unfolding, preferring to measure the shortfall rather than acknowledge the awesome richness of the gift itself. God of Inward Formation, we confess our easy attachment to things external, ignoring your inner presence which is the source of energy and self-renewal. God of Integration, we confess our accommodation to living with fragments, denying that wholeness which is our health which comes from the unity of outward and inward function. Forgive us on this day of new beginnings for all those surrenders which separate us from who you would have us become, for we would reclaim our lives in the company of Christ in whom everything holds together and who taught us to pray LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. FIRST LESSON H HEARING GOD'S WORD 2 Corinthians 9:10-15 Liz Morris e who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. Through the testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all others, while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! SCRIPTURE ANTHEM Jesus Loves Me The Cherub Choir Debbie Berner, accompanist SECOND LESSON A Matthew 15:29-39 Stu McCalley fter Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee, and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them, so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way. The disciples said to him, Where are we to get enough bread

in the desert to feed so great a crowd? Jesus asked them, How many loaves have you? They said, Seven, and a few small fish. Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. Those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. After sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. ANTHEM Come Thou Fount The Children s Choir Vance Briceland, accompanist Arr. Lee Scott, who was born in 1950 and received his education from the University of Alabama. He has over 300 compositions currently in publication and travels extensively around the world to conduct workshops, choirs and hymn festivals. The text is taken from Psalm 122 and contains the words I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord! Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem." We welcome back to First Congregational Church former assistant organist, Jayson Engquist. He also shares his talents during the prelude with a section from Elgar's most familiar orchestral work Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma) and commonly referred to as The Enigma Variations. Each of the 14 variations composed are dedicated to his "friends pictured within," and are musical portrayals of many of his close circle of friends. In the Wikipedia entry about the piece, it states "Augustus Jaeger was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. For a long time he was a close

friend of Elgar, giving him useful advice, but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Remarkably, Elgar later related on several occasions how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. The name of the variation refers to Nimrod, an Old Testament patriarch described as "a mighty hunter before the Lord" the name Jäger being German for hunter." Next Week at First Congregational Church 10:00 am Worship Service Meetinghouse The First Sunday in Advent Music by: The Chancel Choir: Gloria and Et in Terra Pax from Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi The Palmer Handbells: Savior of the Nations, Come, Arr. Cathy Moklebust Rev. Avery C. Manchester, preaching *** 5:00 pm linc worship service Auditorium (Please Note Change from Published Schedule in MHM) Going Home Luke 15:11-24 Come as you are and bring all your friends! Leader: Dan England Thanks to Pam Grunow and the Chancel Committee for decorating the Harvest Table this morning. The First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God's guidance in our journey of faith.

We have child care for babies and toddlers every Sunday. Your children are always welcome for the entire service or for a respite time if needed. Please see an usher if you need directions. The 10:00 am Service is broadcast live each week on WGCH 1490 AM Radio. In addition, the service is available through the church s website, A bulletin can be found there as well as a link to the live broadcast. Previous sermons may also be found there. The memorial fund honoring Elizabeth and Warren Dennison has provided for the radio broadcast of this morning s service. Calendar TODAY Church School Today we have a special opportunity to worship together for the entire service. There are extra books and activity sheets for our children on the bookshelves in the aisle leading to the Chapel. Although there are no church school classes, the Baby Nursery and Toddler Room are open as always. Three and four year olds can join us if you or they need a change of venue! Next Sunday, Thanksgiving weekend, there are no classes again but there will be an Advent wreath-making Big Event for all children who are here. Sharing Christmas Blessings It s that time of year again when we share our blessings with friends at Pilgrim Towers and H.O.M.E. Co-op in Orland, Maine. This is the sixth year we have been able to bring some holiday cheer to these two communities. This year we have a great group of volunteers to help make this magic happen led by Mary-Ann Assing and several other elves. Don t forget to pick up your gift tags today for a man, woman, boy or girl. Deadline for wrapping and delivering your gift(s) back to the church is Friday, December 9. Bible Study We're welcoming newcomers to the Bible Study even though there are only a couple of weeks left (good planning, eh?). Anyway, this week we take a careful look at the matters of light and darkness in the story of a man who was born blind. This is an intriguing character

who is changed forever when Jesus brings him sight. But even more interesting is what happens to him spiritually and intellectually as people try to understand what happened to him. His soul evolves and so can yours if you will join so many others who come to let a little light shine into the drear of these November days. Youth and Cherub Choir Rehearsals There will be no Youth or Cherub Choir rehearsal today. Parish Nurse Sue Asselin, RN is available in Room 203 after the Worship Service. Stop in to have your blood pressure checked or discuss any health concerns. Annual H.O.M.E. Craft Sale Today is the last day of the Annual H.O.M.E. Craft Sale. It is being held in the auditorium from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Be sure to stop by to enjoy a bit of Maine hospitality and shopping to help support Homeworkers Organized for More Employment (H.O.M.E.) from rural Hancock County, Maine. All proceeds from this sale go directly to H.O.M.E. Come see the handmade quilts, Christmas decorations and gifts, woolens, pottery, wooden toys, weavings, homemade jams, maple syrup, and much, much more! Christmas Tree Sale One of the ways that we increase the amount we are able to share through the Outreach Budget of FCCOG is through our Annual Christmas Tree Sale! The trees (and wreaths, garlands and kissing balls) arrived yesterday and we began selling as soon as the truck was unloaded. Here's where you come in...buy TREES AND OTHER ITEMS FROM US!! Also, we still need volunteers to pull off this effort. If you are able to help out, please contact the Church Office. linc Join us today at 5:00 pm in the Auditorium for our new linc worship service. Come in your jeans and t-shirt and experience something completely new. The theme today is Stories from this Side of Faith Deuteronomy 7:9 (please note this is a change from the schedule that was published in November s MHM). Sometimes, we have to get to the other side of a situation to see the places where God was while the

story was unfolding. Today, members of our faith community will share their stories, how they understood God then and how they understand God on this side of faith! Leaders: Community Y! - Youth Ministry The Youth Ministry programs (Y!) for FCCOG will meet tonight. Come to linc first at 5:00 pm, if you'd like, and then stick around for the Y! programs. JPF will meet at 6:00 pm for Legoland of the Lost and SPF will also meet at 6:00 pm for SPF45. THIS WEEK Community Thanksgiving Service Tomorrow The Greenwich Fellowship of Clergy presents the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at St. Michael The Archangel Parish in Greenwich tomorrow evening, Monday, November 21, at 7:00 pm. Choirs from around the area will participate in a combined choir as well as in singing individual anthems. Members of the FCCOG Children s Choir will be part of this service. This is a great opportunity to gather together to celebrate the blessings we receive from God. The church is located at 469 North Street. A reception will follow. Please bring non-perishable food donations in support of the East Bridgeport Community. A voluntary monetary offering will also be collected at the service in support of Neighbor to Neighbor. NEXT WEEK Annual Advent "Make Your Own" Craft Workshop Next Sunday Mark your calendar for the Annual Advent Make Your Own Craft Workshop next Sunday, November 27 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Daniels Center sponsored by the Church School Task Force. We will make gifts and ornaments for friends, family and even pets, listen to music of the season and enjoy being together. A great time will be had by all! NEWS AND NOTICES Messiah is coming!

the Christmas Shop. And if you have a special request, come to the shop and see Santa Maria or speak to one of the elves. Manager Maria s Wish List: Everything Christmas, and more elves to help out over the Holiday Season. Thought for the Week: We have the right to believe in the Sun even when it is not Shining to Love one another even when we are Alone and to believe in God even when He is Silent. Let us praise and give thanks to The Lord by reaching out our hands to others less fortunate every day of the year.
