We Proclaim and Respond to the Word of God A Reading from 1 Kings [19:4-8] Elijah went a day s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: It is enough; now, O YHWH, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors. Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, Get up and eat. He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked Please be seated. on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of YHWH came a second time, touched him, and said, Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you. He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 34:1-8 1 I will bless the Holy One in all times and seasons; * God s praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2 I will glory in the Living God; * let all people hear this and rejoice. 3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Holy One; * let us exalt God s Name together. 4 I sought you, O God, and you answered me * and delivered me from all my cares. 5 Look upon God s face, and be radiant; * do not be ashamed to stand before the Holy One. 6 I cried out in my affliction, and God heard me * and freed me from all my troubles. 7 The angel of God abides with us * and rescues all God s children. 8 O taste and see that God is good; * blessed are those who trust in the Holy One. The Psalm is read responsively by whole verse. -6-

A Reading from Ephesians [4:25-5:2] Putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give This reading will be read in Spanish. grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Lector: Oiga lo que el Espíritu está diciendo al pueblo de Dios. Pueblo: Demos gracias a Dios. Sequence Music The people may stand. A Reading from the Holy Gospel [John 6:35, 41-51] Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, O Christ. Jesus said to the people, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. They were saying, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I have come down from heaven? Jesus answered them, Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. Deacon: The Gospel of Jesus Christ. People: Praise to you, O Christ. The Sermon A period of silence follows the Sermon, marked with meditation bell. Please be seated. Preacher: The Rev. Joe Fitzgerald -7-

The Nicene Creed The people may stand. The Nicene Creed is a historical statement of faith used by the early Christian community to define orthodoxy. Please join us as you feel called. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Filioque (Latin for and the son ), the dogmatic formula expressing the double procession of the Holy Spirit, was added to the Nicene Creed by the Western church. -8-

Table Chant The people may stand. The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant: God is with us. People: God is present here. Celebrant: Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. People: We lift our hearts to the Most High. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Holy One. People: It is right to offer thanks and praise Eucharistic Prayer A is adapted for inclusive language from The Book of Common Prayer. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Creator God, maker of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and People: Holy, holy, holy God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant: Holy and gracious One: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Maker of all. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine to be consecrated. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Deacon: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ is present now. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this act of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with Paul, John Mason Neale, Catherine Winkworth, Dominic, Herman of Alaska, Laurence, Clare, * and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Creator, now and for ever. AMEN. * John Mason Neale was a 19th-century Anglican priest who furnished several original hymns that remain in our Hymnal. He gave active support to the liturgical Oxford Movement and he founded the Sisterhood of St. Margaret for the relief of suffering women and girls. Catherine Winkworth was a 19th-century poet who is celebrated as the premier translator of German hymns and chorales into English. Dominic was a turn-of-the-13th-century priest and friar who founded the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominicans. Herman of Alaska was a turn-of-the-19th-century missionary to the Aleut, known in the Russian Orthodox church as St. Herman: Wonderworker of All America. Laurence the Deacon was a 3rd-century witness, one of the more popular saints of the Roman church, who was martyred during the persecution under the Emperor Valerian. Clare was a 13th-century woman of means who renounced her wealth after hearing a sermon preached by Francis of Assisi. She would become Abbess at Assisi. -13-

Affirmation of Faith (inspired by Ephesians 4:32) The people may stand. The Affirmation of Faith is adapted from Liturgy for Sharing Bread and Wine by Frank Henderson. Posted on the Third Space website, We believe that bread comes from grain that grows in the wind and the sun and the rain with the farmers help. We believe that bread comes from love the love of God the love of the farmer the love of the baker s hands the love of those who bring it to us. We believe that bread can be and should be broken and shared and given to all persons until all have enough. We believe that Jesus loved bread and took it and broke it and blessed it and gave it to his disciples. We believe enough in bread to want to receive it from Jesus to want it to nurture us. We want to be bread for others. We believe the Spirit will help us. Amen. Prayers of the People Parish prayer intercessions are listed on page 37. The Prayers of the People were adapted by The Rev. 25 Leader: God of Joy and Companionship, we thank you for the blessings and surprises of life. This week we give thanks for ushers and greeters who live into the GSP goal of promiscuous hospitality for all. (The people may add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God of all blessings, People: We give you heartfelt thanks and praise. The Collect after the Prayers of the People is by The Rev. Steven Shakespeare. Celebrant: Unseen God, drawing all people to the end of our desires: teach us to know true bread from false and to feed on him who shares our flesh to share your love, Jesus Christ, our communion. Amen. Prayer of Confession The Prayer of Confession is adapted from Thom Shuman, and posted on Lectionary Liturgies, Deacon: Before we speak, God knows our needs, yet our words open our hearts to God s grace. Let us prepare ourselves for God s healing as, in words and silence, we tell of all that separates us from God and one another: People: Everlasting God, we confess how we have not lived as your people. We serve many masters-work, wealth, power, addictions yet find no hope in them. We hear the cries of the poor, and shut the doors of our hearts to them. We ridicule those who expose their hopes and dreams to us. Silence Forgive us, Compassion s Heart, and heal us of our brokenness. Make us well, so that by our healing, we might be the hope and love others need in their lives, even as Jesus the Christ brought these gifts to us, calling us to be faithful with the grace, peace, and joy entrusted to us. Amen. Deacon: Now that we have let go of the pain, the bitterness, the anger of our lives, let us be kind, tender-hearted, and gentle towards each other, forgiving as God has forgiven us. People: We are God s beloved children, and will model God s grace and love in our hearts. Thanks be to God! Amen. -25-

Celebrant: God, the Creator, brings you new life. God, the Liberator, forgives you and rescues you. God, the Sustainer, lifts you up to live in the Spirit. May the blessing of God, Creator, Liberator, and Sustainer, be upon you and all of the cosmos. Amen. A Litany of Farewell Leader: Dear Friends: Join in proclaiming the saving presence of our Living God! in Creation Christ is risen in this community Christ is risen in the hearts of all people Christ is risen I bid you pray and give thanks now for Robert who is leaving our midst for expectations not met Have mercy for gifts not given Have mercy for promises not kept Have mercy Adapted from The Living Church, 1994 by Steve Kelsey And also; for this portion of your pilgrimage with the people in this place Thanks to God! for friendships made, celebrations enjoyed, and for moments of nurture Thanks to God! for wounds healed, expectations met, gifts given, promises kept Thanks to God! for all the thoughtful, little, unheralded things done for others Thanks to God! And so, to establish a home in another place with other members of the family of faith Go in peace To continue the journey with new friends, new adventures, new gifts to give and to receive Go in peace -26-

To offer wisdom and experience, competence and compassion, in the vocation to which, you are called Go in peace With whatever fears, whatever sadness, whatever excitement may be yours Go in peace With our faith in you, our hope for you, and our love of you Go in peace The Peace Celebrant: May the Peace of God be with you. People: And also with you. Meditation bell will bring us back to silence. The Liturgy of the Table Offertory Sentence Please be seated. Celebrant: For Yahweh your God is bringing you into a good land... a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing. [Deuteronomy 8:7a, 9a] Offertory Anthem Panis angelicus César Franck Wendy Pipentacos, soloist Pause Prayer over the Gifts The Prayer over the Gifts is from A New Zealand Prayer Book. Celebrant: Giver of life, receive all we offer you this day. People: Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church continue to work in the world through the hearts of all who believe. Amen. -27-

Table Chant The people may stand. The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant: God is with us. People: God is present here. Celebrant: Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. People: We lift our hearts to the Most High. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Holy One. People: It is right to offer thanks and praise. The Great Thanksgiving is adapted from Steven Shakespeare s Eucharistic Prayer 3 in Prayers for an Inclusive Church. Celebrant: Lifegiving God, your word speaks in the void, calling into being things that are not, inviting us to share your work of creation. We thank you for the ages long of gathering stars and cooling earth, of life evolving and waking eyes of wonder. We thank you for the creatures with whom we share the world, for their lives so different from our own and the richness they reveal. We thank you for the Son of Man, formed from Mary s flesh and nurtured by her faith; he walked the growing earth and proclaimed a fearless kingdom of bird and lily, child and stranger, the beggar and the blind. -28-

On the cross, he joined the labor of all creation s yearning; in his rising, he hallowed all flesh to bear the glory of God; he gives the brooding Spirit to bring to birth a living hope. Therefore, with all that has life through him with animals and angels and all who hope for a new creation, we share the song of love which sounds from all eternity: Sanctus (Holy) -29-

The Celebrant continues: We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us + and upon these gifts + that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our brother Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me. As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond what all words can hold. Deacon: Great is the mystery of faith. People & Celebrant: Christ has died Christ is risen Christ is present now. Celebrant: Therefore, we come to him in whom all is created in heaven and on earth, whose cross and resurrection make all things new. People & Celebrant: We offer this to you, asking you to smile upon the gift we bring, for you alone are the Giver and Christ s the gift through which we live once and for all. -30-

Through him who was emptied to bear your fullness we make our prayer with Paul, John Mason Neale, Catherine Winkworth, Dominic, Herman of Alaska, Laurence, Clare, * and all created life to the glory of the God who fills all in all now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer (Contemporary) The people may stand. Each Sunday at Grace St. Paul s, the Lord s Prayer alternates between English and Spanish. The Breaking of the Bread Fraction Anthem Deacon and People: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Fraction Anthem is adapted from other texts by The Rev. Steve Keplinger. Celebrant: Alleluia. Be known to us, risen Christ, in the breaking of the bread. People: The bread which we break makes all of us one with you. Alleluia. The Invitation to Communion Celebrant: The gifts of God for the people of God. -31-

Sending Eucharistic Visitors After communion, the service resumes here. The Celebrant may name the Eucharistic Visitors and those who may receive Holy Communion at home. All say together: We send you forth bearing these Holy Gifts. May those to whom you go share with us in the Communion of Christ s Body and Blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Postcommunion Prayer The people may stand. The Postcommunion Prayer is from Prayers for an Inclusive Church by The Rev. Steven Shakespeare. Celebrant and People: God revealed in the stranger s approach and the bread of hospitality, in the message of new life and the laughter of response: we thank you for this meal, this sharing in yourself, and we pray that our communion might be broken apart for the world. Amen. Blessing (inspired by John 6) The Blessing is adapted Nancy C. Townley, and posted on the Ministry Matters website, Celebrant: Filled to the brim with the goodness of God; the nourishment of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, and the power of the Holy Spirit, go now in peace to serve God in all that you think, do and say. And may the blessing of God, Creator, Liberator, and Sustainer be with you now and forevermore. Amen. -33-

GSP Parish Life August 9, 2015 The Sunday bulletin is filled with information about events at Grace St. Paul s or of interest to the Grace St. Paul s community. Please take it home and read it at your leisure. There s something for everyone! Check out GSP s website: Grace St. Paul s Episcopal Church 2331 E. Adams St., Tucson, AZ Grace St. Paul s parishioners were asked to share a response to the following question. Each week we will publish responses as we celebrate GSP in our lives. I am grateful to God for the Grace St. Paul s community because: It is open, welcoming, positive and understanding. My faith is challenged, nurtured and rewarded here. I am called to action! I find a community of seekers and path walkers who also challenge religiosity in an open, loving and non-judgmental way. People are happy here! It serves the needs of ALL the people. It reaches out to the homeless community with Joseph s Pantry. And their animals. SpiritSong On Summer Break SpiritSong (Taizé) will not meet in July and August, but will resume in September. Specific questions or comments may be directed to Roger Pierce at rpierce41@gmail.com. -38-

Good Grief Spiritual Support Group Grief isn t logical; neither is acceptance, but sharing your struggle with others can mysteriously help the healing process. Grace St. Paul s grief group is a place of solace, like a best friend, where you can fully express your loneliness, confusion, anger, sadness, or other feelings, and where people will listen without judgment. Our goal is to support each other during the grieving process. For some of you, your loss may have been some time ago. The spiritual journey of grief involves remembering and talking about the person or animal companion who has died. Learning to accept one s life without them is part of this. Sometimes a transformation in one s relationship with God occurs, either in subtle or strong ways. The group will meet for 7 weeks on Saturday mornings from 9 10 a.m., starting August 22, If you are interested, please call Rev. Chris Ledyard, or Karen Hanson through the church office, (520) There is limited space available for this support group. Materials will be provided. Please note this is not a therapy group. Youth Trip to Casa Hogar Emmanuel Orphanage in Naco, Sonora GSP s youth will be making their second trip the orphanage in Naco, Sonora on Saturday, August 15. We are bringing quilts, pillows, coloring books and crayons, knit hats, and gently used toys. We are also bringing lunch. If you would like to help us by purchasing lunch items, please contact Rosalind Garcia at Rosalind.Garcia@grace-stpauls.org or at Kiosk? What s That? It s that little machine that looks like an ipad, the one in the narthex of the church and it is there to help you make your financial giving to GSP so much easier. Remember, you can make a one-time gift, indicate your new financial intentions for 2015, and make regular contributions through your friendly Kiosk. If you re unsure how it works, just ask. Try it you ll like it! -39-

Coffee Hour Hospitality We d like to make coffee hour self-supporting. Your donations of food and any monetary contributions you make can help offset the costs of condiments and paper products. Coffee and light refreshments are offered on Sundays at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in McBride Hall. We have wonderfully generous members and talented bakers and we want to take advantage of both. So, in an effort to have the wealth spread evenly across the various Sundays each month, we ll ask folks to provide goodies based on the first letter in their last names:! The first Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters A F! The second Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters G L! The third Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters M R! The fourth Sunday of each month: last names that begin with letters S Z Our hope is that, by providing some sort of schedule, we will have something delicious to offer consistently every Sunday. Let s have a feast every week! Of course, anyone inspired to share good food on additional Sundays is welcome to do so. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Allen, the chair of the Coffee Hour Hospitality ministry, at
