1 Order of Worship Christmas Music for Harp Opening Carol (all stand) Once in Royal David s City IRBY Solo Once in royal David's city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. Christmas Eve A Festival of Lessons and Carols December 24, :00 pm Choir He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and scorned, the lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy. Congregation We, like Mary, rest confounded That a stable should display Heaven's Word, the world's creator, Cradled there on Christmas Day, Yet this child, our Lord and brother, Brought us love for one another. For he is our lifelong pattern; Daily, when on earth he grew; He was tempted, scorned, rejected, Tears and smiles like us he knew. Thus he feels for all our sadness, And he shares in all our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love; For that child who seemed so helpless Is our Lord in heaven above, And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, where his saints his throne surround: Christ, revealed to faithful eye, Set at God's right hand on high.
2 Bidding Prayer First Lesson Genesis 3:8-15 He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love, And wonders of his love, And wonders, wonders of his love. Choir Carol Adam lay ybounden Frank Boles (b. 1955) Adam lay y-bounden, bounden in a bond; Four thousand winters thought he not too long. And all was for an apple, an apple that he took, As clerkes finden written in their book. Ne had the apple taken been, the apple taken been, Ne had never our Lady a-been heavené queen. Blessed be the time that apple taken was, Therefore we moun singen, Deo gracias. (Thanks be to God.) Second Lesson Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 Choir Carol Lux Aurumque Eric Whitacre (b. 1970) Lux, calida gravisque pura velut aurum et canunt angeli molliter modo natum. Light, warm and heavy as pure gold, and the angels sing softly to the newborn babe. Fourth Lesson Isaiah 11:1-4a; 6-9 Choir Carol Ding Dong! Merrily on High French Carol, arr. David Willcocks ( ) Ding dong merrily on high, In heav n the bells are ringing: Ding dong! verily the sky Is riv n with angel singing. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! E en so here below, below, Let steeple bells be swungen, And Io, io, io! By priest and people sungen. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Pray you, dutifully prime Your matin chime, ye ringers; May you beautifully rime Your evetime song, ye singers. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Fifth Lesson Luke 1:26-35, 38 Third Lesson Isaiah 11:1-4a; 6-9 Congregational Carol (all stand) Joy to the World ANTIOCH Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and heaven and nature sing. Joy to the world! The Savior reigns: Let us our songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. Congregational Carol (all stand) Angels We Have Heard on High FRENCH CAROL Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o er the plains, And the mountains in reply Echo back their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? Say what may the tidings be, Which inspire your heavenly song. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come adore on bended knee, Christ, the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.
3 Sixth Lesson Luke 2:1-7 Congregation Carol (all stand) What Child Is This GREENSLEEVES What child is this, who laid to rest, On Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the son of Mary! Why lies he in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here The silent word is pleading. So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come, one and all, to own him. The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone him. Seventh Lesson Luke 2:15-20 Choir Carol A Child is Born Leo Nestor (b. 1948) Offering A child is born in Bethlehem, Alleluia! Wherefore rejoice, Jerusalem, Alleluia! With joyful hearts in praise, Christ the newborn King adore now as newfound songs we raise. Hic jacet in praesepio, Alleluia! (There he lies in a lowly manger,) Qui regnat sine termino. Alleluia! (He who reigns above the skies.) In cordis jubilo, Christum natum adoremus cum novo cantico. (Christ the newborn King adore now as newfound songs we raise.) De matre natus virgine, Alleluia! (He is born of a virgin mother,) Qui Lumen est de Lumine, Alleluia! (Who is Light from Light.) In cordis jubilo... In hoc natali gaudio, Alleluia! (On this joyful natal day,) Benedicamus Domino: Alleluia! (Let us bless the Lord.) In cordis jubilo... Now praise the Blessed Trinity, Alleluia! Who reigns for all eternity, Alleluia! With joyful hearts in praise, Christ, the newborn King adore cum novo cantico. Choir Carol The Little Road to Bethlehem Michael Head ( ) As I walked down the road at set of sun, the lambs were coming homewards, one by one, I heard a sheepbell softly calling them along the little road to Bethlehem. Beside an open door, as I drew nigh, I heard sweet Mary sing a lullaby. She sang about the lambs at close of day, and rocked her tiny King among the hay. Across the air the silver sheepbells rang, The lambs are coming home, sweet Mary sang, Your Star of gold is shining in the sky, so sleep, my little King, go lullaby. Offertory Carol Sure On This Shining Night Samuel Barber ( ) Sure on this shining night Of starmade shadows round, Kindness must watch for me This side the ground. The late year lies down the north. All is healed, all is health. High summer holds the earth. Hearts all whole. Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder Wandering far alone Of shadows on the stars. Eighth Lesson Matthew 2:1-12 Ninth Lesson John 1: John 4:9-11
4 Congregational Carol (remain seated) Silent Night STILLE NACHT During the introduction to the carol, the choir will light the candles of those seated on the outside aisle. Please pass the light down your pew until all candles are lighted. Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing: Alleluia; Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born. Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
