Christ the King Lutheran Church 111 West Magnolia Road Salina, Kansas (785) Pastor Dennis Kootz, Vacancy Pastor (785) Blessed Is the Fruit of Mary s Womb FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT December 23, 2018
MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of Christ the King is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people and to make them disciples of Jesus. Welcome: We are pleased that you are here to join us in worship today. We pray that our time together in God s word assures you that you are loved by God and your sins are forgiven because of Jesus Christ s life, death, and resurrection. If you are visiting with us today and we can be of any assistance to you, please let us know. Record of Attendance: We ask that all who are worshipping with us today would honor us by giving us a record of your attendance. Please fill out the blue card and then hand it to the center aisle. If you will be fellowshipping with us at the Lord s Table today, please fill out the communion registration on the blue attendance cards. Prayer Request: If you have any prayer requests, please place them on an attendance card. If you would like your request included in the prayers today, please inform one of the ushers and they will inform Pastor. Children are always welcome in the worship service. At Christ the King we believe that it is important for the whole family to worship together whenever possible. In order to assist you and for your comfort, we have a room just off the sanctuary that has a one-way glass, and we also have a nursery. If one of these areas would be helpful to you the usher will be happy to assist you. Communion Statement: The Lord s Supper is celebrated at Christ the King in accordance with doctrine of Holy Scripture and the confessions of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and the glad confidence that as we receive the bread and wine we also receive the very Body and Blood of Lord Jesus Christ. In this meal God offers and gives to each who receive His Son s body and blood forgiveness of sins, strength for
a holy life, eternal life, and fellowship. Our Lord invites to His table all who trust and believe His Words, are repentant, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. Because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, we ask that those who have not been instructed, have doubts, or hold a confession differing from this congregation and are not members of a congregation that belongs to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the Lord s Supper to first speak with the Pastor or Elder. Thank you. Altar flowers are given to the Glory of God by Thelma Rectenwald in memory of her husband Don. Order of Worship: Creative Worship As We Gather: In the Holy Gospel, Mary, already pregnant with Jesus, meets with her relative Elizabeth. Elizabeth is pregnant with the one who will be called John the Baptist. Still in his mother s womb, John recognizes Jesus at the voice of His mother. Jesus incarnation is so profound that it reaches even the unborn. Likewise, Jesus resurrection is so powerful that it reaches even the dead. All human creatures, no matter in what stage of humanity, are loved by this Jesus. And He is coming soon. LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES WELCOME & GREETING CHIMES
PREPARATION OPENING HYMN Of the Father s Love Begotten LSB Of the Father s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see Evermore and evermore. 2 Oh, that birth forever blessèd, When the virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bore the Savior of our race, And the babe, the world s Redeemer, First revealed His sacred face Evermore and evermore. 3 This is He whom seers in old time Chanted of with one accord, Whom the voices of the prophets Promised in their faithful word. Now He shines, the long-expected; Let creation praise its Lord Evermore and evermore. 4 O ye heights of heav n, adore Him; Angel hosts, His praises sing. Pow rs, dominions, bow before Him And extol our God and King. Let no tongue on earth be silent, Ev ry voice in concert ring Evermore and evermore.
5 Christ, to Thee, with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving And unending praises be, Honor, glory, and dominion, And eternal victory Evermore and evermore. Amen. Public domain INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. OPENING SENTENCES P: Alleluia! Christ is coming soon! C: He is coming soon indeed! Alleluia! P: Blessed is the fruit of Mary s womb! C: He shall stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the Lord! P: His flock shall dwell secure. C: And He will be their peace. P: My soul magnifies the Lord, C: and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. P: Alleluia! Christ is coming soon! C: He is coming soon indeed! Alleluia!
LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH P: On the four Sundays in Advent, we light a new candle each week. We mark the four candles with these four words: hope, peace, joy, and love. Jesus Christ is the hope of the nations. C: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we hope. P: Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. C: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we rest. P: Jesus Christ is the source of all joy. C: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word do we rejoice. P: Jesus Christ is the Lord of love. C: We wait for the Lord, and in His Word His love finds us. HYMN The King Shall Come to Bring Us Love (Tune: The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns) The King shall come to bring us love, To share His life and light! He came, a child from heav n above. He ll come again in might! We light this candle filled with awe At all the Lord has done! Since we could never keep God s Law, Christ kept it as the Son. Text: Andrew R. Jones. 7 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Hebrews 10:10) P: In the season of Advent we prepare for Jesus to come. Sometimes in our preparations we lose sight of God s grace. Sometimes we are so desperate for God s approval we think we can earn His favor by doing more, by being better, or by scheming in just the right way. Despite God s unconditional love, we still try to earn our way into security and salvation. We turn to the Lord for forgiveness. (Silence for reflection.) P: Heavenly Father, C: we confess that we have not trusted Your Word of forgiveness, life, and salvation. We have questioned if we are truly forgiven. We have doubted the new life we now live. We have distrusted Your way of salvation. Restore us, O God. Let Your face shine, that we may be saved! P: God s ways are not our ways. Despite our continued failures and our inability to trust as we ought, Christ s death and resurrection for Your forgiveness remains effective, and it always will. Hear these words of forgiveness for they are from Christ Himself: As an ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
WORD HYMN O Come, O Come, Emmanuel LSB 357; Sts. 1, 4, 6 and 7 1 O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Refrain ref Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel! 4 O come, Thou Branch of Jesse s tree, Free them from Satan s tyranny That trust Thy mighty pow r to save, And give them vict ry o er the grave. Refrain 6 O come, Thou Dayspring from on high, And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death s dark shadows put to flight. Refrain 7 O come, Desire of nations, bind In one the hearts of all mankind; Bid Thou our sad divisions cease, And be Thyself our King of Peace. Refrain Public domain SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your presence we may be defended from the attacks of Satan; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING (The ruler of Israel shall come from Bethlehem.) Micah 5:2 5a 2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. 3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. 4 And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. 5 And he shall be their peace. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Hebrews 10:5 10 ( We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. ) 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7 Then I said, Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is
written of me in the scroll of the book. 8 When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, Behold, I have come to do your will. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. VERSE (Matthew 1:23a) C: Alleluia. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 1:39 56 (Mary visits Elizabeth.) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the first chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said,
My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever. 56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY Tell Out, My Soul, the Greatness of the Lord LSB 935 (This hymn is based on Mary s Magnificat, found in Luke 1:46-55, which is today s Gospel reading and the text for the sermon.) 1 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; Tender to me the promise of His Word; In God my Savior shall my heart rejoice. 2 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of His name! Make known His might, the deeds His arm has done; His mercy sure, from age to age the same; His holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.
3 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of His might! Pow rs and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, The hungry fed, the humble lifted high. 4 Tell out, my soul, the glories of His Word! Firm is His promise, and His mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord To children s children and forevermore! 1962, renewed 1990 Hope Publishing Co. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no SERMON (Rev. Robert Schaedel) Honored by God Luke 1:46-55 NICENE CREED C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (LSB 357) P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord Jesus Christ, come to all those who are in bondage to sin and Satan. Break their chains and release them from their enslavement, that they serve You in peace and quietness. O come, O come, Emmanuel, C: and ransom captive Israel. P: Lord Jesus Christ, we live in a world where everyone does what is right in their own minds. Come to us with Your perfect wisdom, that we follow You and not our own selfish ways. O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, C: who orders all things mightily. P: Lord Jesus Christ, come to those whose life is in chaos and provide order, structure, and discipline, that they live in peace and unity with their neighbors. O come, O come, Thou Lord of might, C: who gave the Law on Sinai s height. P: Lord Jesus Christ, Satan remains an active voice in the world. Silence him by Your mighty power, and proclaim liberty to those who are under his influence. O come, Thou Branch of Jesse s tree, C: free us from Satan s tyranny. P: Lord Jesus Christ, there are many who do not know You and Your salvation. Send missionaries, pastors, teachers, and anyone willing to share Your grace around the world, that more might believe in
You and be saved by Your death and resurrection. O come, Thou Key of David, come, C: and open wide our heav nly home. P: Lord Jesus Christ, so many in this world are lonely and longing for friendship and a place to belong. Send us to those people, that we befriend them and bring them to You. O come, Thou Dayspring from on high, C: and cheer us by Thy drawing nigh. P: Lord Jesus Christ, come to Your broken Church with the gifts of reconciliation and restoration. Unite Your people once again, that we enjoy fellowship rather than fractured division. O come, Desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of all mankind; C: bid Thou our sad divisions cease, and be Thyself our King of Peace. P: Into Your hands, Lord Jesus, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your ever-present mercy. C: Amen. WE PRAISE GOD WITH OUR OFFERING PREFACE SACRAMENT P: The Lord be with you. (2 Timothy 4:22) C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. (Colossians 3:1) C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. (Psalm 136) C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
PROPER PREFACE P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who comes to dwell with us as Emmanuel, God with us. By His presence and protection, we are saved from the schemes of Satan. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Holy King (Tune: Savior of the Nations, Come) Holy, holy, holy King, Come and visit us, and bring Love throughout the heav ns and earth, As we raise Hosanna s mirth. Text: Andrew R. Jones. Copyright 2018 Concordia Publishing House. All rights reserved. Used by permission. [Permission is granted to reproduce this text for use December 2, 2018 March 3, 2019.] PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.
Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD (Matthew 26:26 28; Mark 14:22 24; Luke 22:19 20; 1 Corinthians 11:23 25) P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. (1 Corinthians 11:26) C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20) P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. AGNUS DEI (Tune: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel) O Lamb of God, You Take Away O Lamb of God, You take away Each sin that leads our hearts astray. Have mercy on us, great High Priest, And lead us to Your endless feast. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Your love is here, O Israel. Text: Andrew R. Jones. Copyright 2018 Concordia Publishing House.
