Romans Sunday School INTRODUCTION REVIEW A letter to unknown people. Sometimes the greatest discoveries are made unintentionally e.g. Penicillin. The Epistle to the Romans is Paul s Opus Magnus, it is the Bible within the Bible. No Book in Scripture equates in Doctrinal Content and Exposition to Romans. Yet this is why Paul wrote this letter: he had never met most of these brethren in person. Paul did not found this church.
REVIEW II - THE LETTER Paul s theological thinking was well developed
III THE WONDER OF ROMANS It is just a letter. REVIEW It was written to a church probably spread into many smaller congregations throughout the city of Rome. The letter was written to and for common people. It is not a mysterious book for theology lectures only. Romans is the Old Testament re written. Jared Reed Learn Romans and you will know your Bible!
NAS Romans 1:1 Paul, a bond servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 whichhepromisedbeforehandthroughhisprophetsin the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles, for His name's sake, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
Preface 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God The author identifies himself and his job Pretty customary of the writing of the times, since documents were longer and they didn t have stationary. There are three aspects highlighted in this stationary 1A Servant of Jesus Christ 2 Called as an apostle 3For the gospel concerning Jesus
Preface 1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God a) Servant They were not captured in the days of Rome Slaves were many times educated (tutors) 2/3 of the Roman Empire was made of slaves In the west, their treatment was harsher than in the east They could accumulate wealth and after age 30 they could buy their freedom Paul uses this imagery repetitively in his ministry to the gentiles of the Greco Roman world of his day. A slave was a servant. Most of the people he addressed were slaves.
Preface 1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God aa) Servant of Christ Jesus His primary identification was not one of authority Even when the apostolic ministry bore the highest invested authority from Christ to the church. To forgive or retain sins John 20:23 comp Acts 8 & 13 To prescribe directives for the churches Acts 17 To establish the doctrinal foundation of the church Ephesians 2:20 Paul and for the matter none of the apostles were power mongers. They imitated their master Mark 10:45 Practical: beware of ministers who need to flex their arms!
Preface 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God b) Apostle Not self or peers appointed but called by God. Witness of the resurrection Acts 1:21 22 Appointed by Christ directly Luke 6:13 Their doctrine revealed and taught by Christ John 20:21 23 Ex: Galatians 1 They were given authority over the church 1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 2:20, Jude 1:17 They had the signs of an apostle to confirm their calling 2 Colossians 12:12 / Hebrews 2:4
c) For the purpose of the Gospel of Jesus II PURPOSE: To proclaim the Gospel 2 promised beforehand through God s prophets of the Holy Scriptures a) The Gospel is not something new, it was the plan from the beginning Genesis 3:15 / John 8:56 / etc. b) The Gospel was not a change in course. It was the path from the beginning > Peter s sermon Acts 2:22 ff c) Stephen s sermon mentioned the first Biblical author Moses Acts 7:37 as one who directed his readers to Jesus
III THE THEME OF THE GOSPEL 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, a) The Gospel is concerning Christ The gospel is not a conglomerate of beliefs It is not a program of reformation b) A descendant of David Connected with a land, a people and a covenant According to the flesh, because He was a man John 1:14 The word became flesh / Emanuel God with us / Jesus Savior of His people (Yahweh saves)
III THE THEME OF THE GOSPEL 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, c) Christ declared the Son of God by the resurrection. Eternal Filiation this was an older debate until JM admitted he was in error. Eternal Subordination is different, and it has been a more recent debate because of Wayne Grudem ST, and IT is used as an argument for complementarianism The text points to Jesus being declared Son of God by His resurrection
III THE THEME OF THE GOSPEL 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, c) Jesus declared the Son of God by the resurrection. AT Robertson. 1. The Resurrection publicly declared His claims of Deity and of Filiation to God 2. He was the Son before resurrection (Mark 1:11, 9:7) 3. He was the Son before His birth (Parable of the unfaithful servants Luke 20:13) 4. The Spirit of Holiness, not the Holy Spirit, but Jesus own holiness; the chords of death could not retain Him. Acts 2:24
III THE THEME OF THE GOSPEL 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, d) The Gospel is anchored on the Resurrection of Jesus As proof of His divinity As Proof of Jesus sinlessness As Proof of God s acceptance of His redemptive work Romans 4:25
IV JESUS THE MEDIATOR 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations a) The Mediator of God's grace, gifts and calling The OT lesson (particularly in Leviticus) is: we can t approach God, the God of Scripture, on our own Jesus is the enabler and intermediary between God and man cf 1 Timothy 2:5
IV JESUS THE MEDIATOR 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations b) The source of effectual faith: the obedience of faith Faith in Scripture is believing, tied to convictions

Cornerstone Bible Church Survey Romans 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; 4and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths. 5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
IV JESUS THE MEDIATOR 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations b) The source of effectual faith: the obedience of faith Faith in Scripture is believing, tied to convictions 1Timothy 6:3 4 If anyone advocates a different doctrine, and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing; Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed.
IV JESUS THE MEDIATOR 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ c) The Mediator of effectual calling to the gentiles vs 6 Notice where the calling points to: belonging to Christ The Gospel brings a transfer of dominion, from the Kingdom of Darkness to the Kingdom of Light Colossians 1:13 From the devil, to now belong to God s beloved Son You have been bought with a price.
IV JESUS THE MEDIATOR 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. d) The Mediator of the benefits of the Gospel: 1. The love of God 2. The Unmerited Favor of God (Grace) and 3. Peace from God
