John Politan Matthew 3:13 December 16, 2018 Reading from the Valley of Vision, The Gift of Gifts (pp ) I hope you have your Bibles with you, and I hope you would turn them, please, to Matthew, chapter 3. I have already set it up for you in my opening remarks (apologies to those who are getting this on media now at this late date), but we have been studying the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are in the middle of the Christmas season. And, yes, the timing of the baptism was such that one of our own, our Marine Sergeant, could be here, because there was only a special time when he, being deployed, when he could be back visiting family. We knew it was going to fall most likely sometime in December, but we weren t sure when. And, so, we hit it here. So, everybody says, Oy vey! We are interrupting the Christmas season to do a baptism! Wrong, wrong, a thousand times wrong. This has got everything to do with the deity, the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ, and Christmas. Thirty years He lives in total obscurity. He comes to earth. By the way, He identifies with sinners. You know why? He was born of a woman, Mary, who was herself a sinner I am sure a very godly Jewess, a very godly Jewish young lady (whose real name, by the way, was Miriam, not Mary). But, in any event, still a sinner. He is born of a virgin. She is impregnated by the Holy Spirit. Why? Because He is not going to have a sin nature and the Holy Spirit of God, God, of course, will have nothing to do with sin. And, therefore, what does it say in the prophets? A virgin shall conceive and the child within her shall be what? Holy. Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, 1
the Prince of Peace, the Savior of the world. So, He identifies with sinners in His birth, and, of course, Isaiah 53 says He will be numbered with the transgressors. And, He was, in His death a thief on one side and a thief on the other side. He is numbered with transgressors in His death. But, I want you to see that He literally steps out of the shadows after thirty years of living life to start a public ministry. And, when He does, He does it with such a humble approach to everything, again underscoring what Christmas is all about: God humbling himself to do something, to fulfill a mission. Well, in Matthew, chapter 3, let s orient ourselves one more time. Matthew, chapter 3. Let s just get to the heart of it in verse 13: Matt. 3:13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried [in the Greek it means kept on trying ] to prevent Him, saying, [and, every one of these personal pronouns is emphatic in the Greek, so I am going to read it that way] I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me? 15 But Jesus answering said to him, Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us [key word] us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he [John the Baptist] permitted Him. 16 After being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him [Christ], 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased. The Trinity is nowhere mentioned in the Bible, but it is everywhere, and there it is again. The Holy Spirit comes down like a dove, Jesus is coming out of the waters, and a voice comes out of heaven with the Father: you have the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit right there, the Trinity right there. Now, the word in verse 13 then connects us back with verse 5: 2
Matt. 3:5 [All] Jerusalem was going out to him [John the Baptist], and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan; 6 and they were being baptized by him [John the Baptist] in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. So, all these people are going out to be baptized by John, and then all of a sudden it says here in verse 13, Then. Well, when was that? We don t have a clue. Now, Jesus, we know from the Scripture record, was approximately thirty years old. We know that John the Baptist was a cousin of Christ, and that he was six months older than Christ. So, a lot of people think that certainly John had to have been baptizing and doing his ministry out in the wilderness long enough for a whole bunch of people from Jerusalem, Judea, and all the countryside to go out to where John was. Now, where was John? We don t know. We know it is a place called Bethabara. We don t have a clue where that is today somewhere out in the wilderness, out on the Jordan River. It could be as far as a sixty-mile walk from Nazareth and Jerusalem to get there, okay? And, there, all of Jerusalem and all of Judea; does that mean every human being who lived there was going out there? No, it is an idiomatic phrase, but it meant a whole lot of people had been going out there for a long time. Most theologians think that he was probably ministering for at least six months. Why? Because he is six months older than Jesus. Jesus started his public ministry at about the age of thirty, and they think maybe John the Baptist started his at the age of thirty, which would have been six months before. Why do they think John the Baptist may have started then? Well, because in Numbers, chapter 4, it says that priests need to be thirty years of age. But, that is a problem, because in Numbers, chapter 8, they change it and they lower the age of the priests to 25 years. And, in I Chronicles 23, David lowers it again to 20 years. And, so, the bottom line is, we don t know how old John the Baptist was when he started, but we know this much: Jesus started when He was about thirty. We know John is six months older than Him, so 3
John has been out there since some point in time, okay? And, that phrase then connects Jesus. Now, Jesus hasn t made any disciples yet. Jesus hasn t called anybody yet. Jesus is on His own. What has He been doing for thirty years? And, this is a part of the humility of Christ: for thirty years He has been getting up, as a kid, sitting at mom and dad s table, eating breakfast, going to school, doing what they do, going and working and helping out around the household, going to synagogue, doing this, doing that. Then He is a pre-teen, then He is a teen, then He is a mature teen, then He is in His early twenties, then He is in His mid-twenties. He was working in the carpenter s shop. He is getting up, He is going to work, He is doing this, He is doing that. He is going to weddings. He is going to Bar Mitzvahs. He is going to funerals. He is getting tired. He is getting hungry. He is sweating. He is living life, but get this: He is fully human. You have a Savior that can identify with everything about us. But, He is also fully God, and the entire time that is going on, in the back of His mind, He knows [points to the cross] that is coming. He is constantly living in light of the cross in the light of the cross. So, He steps out, if you will, into a public ministry, and it starts right here. This key word in verse 13, then He arrived, that is the same word, paraginomai, that is often used when a teacher, or a judge, or a politician, or somebody would take a new position and a new office and would be installed. They would say he or she arrived on the scene. It is almost like an announcement, if you will. And, it is interesting that back in verse, where it says, Now in those days, John the Baptist came preaching, verse 1, the same word there for came, arrived, is translated in verse 13. It is come on the scene, if you will. And, so, it is sort of a statement where he sort of publicly comes on the scene. The same word there. And, again, we don t know exactly where. We just know that He came and He came on His own. It is significant, by the way, a key verse (we won t go there because of time, but just write down, and I want to get it on the recording here) in Luke 3:21, a parallel passage, it says, 4
Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized [meaning by John the Baptist], Jesus was also baptized What is the point? The Luke 3 passage shows us that Jesus came along with the crowd. It wasn t some private little one-on-one with John in some remote setting out in the Jordan. Jesus is coming along with a whole crowd, all of these people that day after day keep coming out there to see John. One day, He just comes. And, like I said, it might have been a sixty-mile walk. It may have taken two or three days for Him to ultimately get out there to wherever John was in the wilderness, as a part of the group, to do this. It is key, key that you understand that: He is a part of the group. He was just living life, patiently waiting on the Father s will until this time comes. Did Jesus and John know each other? Well, they were first cousins. Most likely, they did. They may have played as kids. We don t know. Certainly, John knew that Christ, that Jesus was to be the Messiah, because even his mother Elizabeth at one time calls Christ Lord. And, so, before John goes out in to the wilderness and lives his life out in the wilderness with locusts, and wild honey, and all of that stuff, getting ready to be this prophet who is going to declare to everybody, Repent! Repent! Repent! The kingdom of heaven is coming, before he goes and does all that, he knows that his cousin Christ is a significant individual, and is this Messiah, but he has never had divine confirmation of that. Again, we won t go there, in the interest of time, but a very interesting passage to look at some time is John 1:29 33, because he even says, I did not know Him. Now, he knew Christ physically, but he said, I really didn t know Him. Then he talks about the day that Christ was baptized, and John had been told, When you see the dove descending upon Him, the Holy Spirit, He is the One, John. He is the Messiah. So, he gets his spiritual confirmation, if you will, from God, right here at this baptism, okay? 5
Now, this is a problem passage for a lot of people a lot of people Jesus coming to be baptized. Why? Because, if you back up, look at verse 2. What was John s baptism all about? What is John saying in verse 2? Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Look at verse 6: Matt. 3:6 [A]nd they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. Look at verse 11: Matt. 3:11 As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance Stop right there. Why is this shocking? What is the problem? Christ is coming with a bunch of people who are all have their hearts prepared to confess their sins, repent of their sins. They want to get their heart right with God, and He is coming along with all of them to be baptized. Well, wait a minute! This is Messiah. This is the sinless Son of God. This is Jesus born of a virgin, right? This is God in human form. What in the world? And, that is why those emphatic pronouns: What do you mean You are coming to me? I should be baptized by You. John had a problem with it. And, a lot of scholars had a problem with it, as well. And, some cult groups go crazy over this, as well. Let me give you some of the theories. There is an apocryphal book it is not a part of the canon of Scripture. It is a part of the nine books that make up a part of the Old Testament in the Douai version of the Bible, and they are not inspired. They are not really a part of the Scriptural record. But, one book is called The Gospel of the Hebrews. And, basically, its theory is that Jesus mother and His brothers wanted Him to be baptized, and so they told Him to go out and to get baptized. That is not in the Bible. It is not Scriptural. It is not accurate. And, of course, the Apocrypha is nothing but an additional attempt by Satan to try to destroy the truth of the Scriptural record. But, the nice thing about it is that at least you know that even at the time 6
(whoever the guy was who wrote this phony book The Gospel of the Hebrews, at least), it was on the minds of the people way back then, Why did Jesus get baptized? The Gnostics which comes from the Greek word to know ( We have got the inside track on spiritual stuff, and we know ) these Gnostics, who were heretics, who taught that Jesus was just a man? They take this account and they say, You see, He really was just born a sinful human being like the rest of us. But, when He went to get baptized, the Holy Spirit descended on Him, and at that point in time He was incarnated, if you will. He was spiritually born again, if you will. And, that is when He became the Messiah. Again, total, total heresy. Why? That is why this underscores what Christmas is all about. What do we say the child will be called? Emmanuel, which means what? A fallen, depraved human being who is born and lives like the rest of us? No. Emmanuel means what? God with us. That is why the virgin birth is so critical. A virgin will conceive and have a child, and He shall be called what? Holy. Wonderful Counselor, and so forth. II Corinthians 5:21, to show you that heresy: He wasn t born a depraved sinner, and then somehow gets born again at His baptism. No, no, no, no, no. II Corinthians 5:21: He who knew no sin ever became sin for us. So, you talk about all of those various reasons. He didn t have any sin. But, still, John the Baptist is saying, Okay. Then what in the world is He doing? You see, John had the same problem. Verse 14: Matt. 3:14 John tried to prevent [the word means kept on trying to prevent ] Him, saying, I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me? He couldn t get it, either. And, then, Jesus says something that underscores it and nails it, and John finally relents and says, Okay. He says, Listen By the way, don t miss this. This is too good for you to miss. Go back to verse 7: Matt. 3:7 But when he [John the Baptist] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming 7
for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance I love that fact that John the Baptist treats the Sadducees and the Pharisees totally different than he does Christ. And, it is an underscoring, again, of the deity of Christ. The Sadducees and the Pharisees are coming to baptism and their heart is wrong. They are sinners. They don t want to acknowledge it. And, they are not wanting to repent. And, he says, I am not about to baptize you. Your heart is wrong. You are sinners. You need baptism, but you need to repent first. But, when Christ comes, he says, Good grief! I am going to refuse to baptize You, too, but not because You are a sinner and You are not repenting, but because I, John the Baptist, am a sinner and You are not. You should be baptizing me. No way in the world this should be taking place. So, again, it underscores the deity of Christ. And, think about this: John the Baptist is described in Matthew 11:11 by Jesus as what? No man ever born of woman is greater than John the Baptist. No prophet was ever greater than John the Baptist. Listen, cults! Listen, all members of all cult groups! Jesus Christ was not just a great prophet. Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. Why? Because the greatest prophet who ever lived said, Slap a T on that. I need to be baptized by You. I am in a class of all of these people that I am baptizing. I am a sinner like they are. You are not in this class. You are wholly other. And, again, it underscores the deity of Christ. And, John s statement is absolutely incredible: You can t be baptized with my baptism, because mine is a baptism for sinners. Mine is a baptism for those who had a spiritual transformation. Mine is a baptism of those who need to repent and turn their life around. By the way, every individual who is going to be baptized today is an individual who has had a supernatural, spiritual work of grace in their heart. They are getting into this water. There is no magic in this water. They are getting into this water, why? They are getting into this water 8
as a public testimony to what God has done in their heart. The transformation has already taken place. Jesus Christ didn t need any transformation. Jesus Christ knew no sin. Jesus Christ is God in human form. So, why is He being baptized? He gives the reason. Everybody goes to this. It isn t because His mother and His brothers told Him to do it. It isn t because, Oh, He is now going to become spiritually unique. It isn t any of those things. Some people want to say, Well, it is because, you know, there was a proselyte baptism that they did in Judaism, and, you see, He was sort of identifying with the Gentiles. Well, that would be sort of weird, to tell all of these Jews that, By the way, your Messiah is acting like a Gentile. It is just... no. He gives you the reason, right there in verse 15. What does Christ say? John, it says in the King James, suffice it so for now. Allow it to happen for now. It is an idiomatic phrase. He is saying, John, it is okay. We can take a pass on this one. It is okay. Why? He says, Allow Me to do it, because I want to fulfill all righteousness. Two things. Two things, real quick. Again, back to Isaiah 53:12, He was numbered with the transgressors. I used to always think, and it is true, His crucifixion! A thief on either side. He is numbered with the transgressors. That is true. Guess what? What did He say? I came to seek and to save the lost. The Son of God did not come to be served but to serve, and to what? Give His life a ransom for many. The baptism of Christ, just like His becoming man to begin with is a colossal statement of His humility, His identification, right off the bat, right when He starts His public ministry, He steps out of the shadows, and He is coming with the group. He says, John, it is okay. Allow it to happen for now. I want to fulfill all righteousness. He is identifying with sinners. He is a friend of sinners, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. He is identifying with sinners. And, get this, He is fulfilling all righteousness. You know what He is saying? A lot of people who are going out to be baptized in that water were God-fearing Jews (and maybe 9
Gentiles, but certainly God-fearing Jews) who were coming to John, and were sorry for their sins, and were actually repenting. A lot of righteous people, if you will, were coming to John to be baptized. Not those Sadducees and Pharisees, he nailed them, but a lot of the others. And, what is it saying? If it is a good, moral, a good thing to do, if it is a right thing to do, even though I am not morally bound by it, I, Jesus, am going to do it. Now, what happened in Matthew 17? A tax collector says to Peter, Hey does your Lord, and all of your friends, do you guys pay taxes? Peter is concerned about that. He goes in, he talks to Jesus, in the house, and he says, Lord, they are asking, should we pay taxes? And, what does Jesus say to him? Peter, does the king tax his son, or strangers? Peter says, Oh the king only taxes strangers. He doesn t tax his own children. He doesn t require taxes of his kids. And, so, who are we, Peter? Well, we are children, we are citizens, of the kingdom, Lord. You are right, Peter. So, quite frankly, we should be free from all of that. But, what does Jesus say? But so as not to offend, Peter, we are going to pay our taxes. It is a right thing to do. Yes, I am God. I am Christ. I am God in the Person of Christ. I am not obligated. But, you know what? We are going to do it. We are going to fulfill all righteousness. If it is a good thing to do, Christ would do it. Christ came to do every good work there was to do. Do you know that these four people (and maybe others; who knows what the Spirit of God is going to do today) have come to be baptized, and do you know that there are people who still may refuse to be baptized? And, there are several reasons for that. One is ignorance. Some people come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. They thing that because they were baptized like I was, a couple of times, really, in the Catholic church as an infant, maybe your church background as an infant. Maybe you were baptized when you 10
were seven or eight in a Protestant church, but then later on you come to know Christ. No. A Scriptural baptism is baptism by immersion after you have come to know Christ. It is an outward, external statement of your belief in Christ. And, by the way, it is a command: Go ye unto all the world, and all the nations, and make disciples of them, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Guess what? You are going to see the Great Commission lived out in front of you in part today: four disciples of Christ are being baptized. They have come to know their Lord and Savior in a personal way, and they are being baptized. Ignorance is a huge issue. A gentleman sat here, helping us set up the baptismal a couple of days ago, sat right where Terri is sitting right now, and said, You know what? You need to underscore that, John. I sat in church for 50 years and nobody ever told me it was a command of Scripture that I was to be baptized. Well, now you know. If you have never been Scripturally baptized and you are a genuine believer in Christ, you are in sin if you do not, as soon as possible, make plans to be Scripturally baptized. A second reason why people don t get baptized is spiritual pride. You know what? This is humbling. Jordan, and Cynthia, and OJ, and Doug, they are sitting there in their bathing suits, and so forth, and we are all dressed up. And, they are going to get in water, and the makeup gets messed up, and their hair gets messed up, and the water is running everywhere, and so forth. It is sort of embarrassing, and it is uncomfortable. It is out of our comfort level. Yes, right! It is very humbling. What did God do in the Person of Christ? Good grief He becomes one of the creatures. Moreover, He is obedient obedient in baptism, fulfilling all righteousness. And, obedient all the way to the point of death praise God! death on a cross. Christmas, again, is all about the cross of Christ. That is what this is all about. Christmas is all about the humility of Christ. There is only one place in all the word of God (in the Gospel of Matthew) that Jesus, in 11
His own words, describes Himself. He says, Take My yoke upon you. My yoke is easy; My burden is light, and He says what? For I am what? Meek, or gentle; it means power under control. I am gentle and what? Humble in heart. The character quality that Christ used to describe Himself is humility. Christmas is all about humility. And, I have got news for you: this [pointing to baptismal] is really humbling. And, it is supposed to be. And, that is why baptism is a means of grace, because what does Scripture say? He gives more grace to the humble. Humble yourself. I told Jordan (I keep picking on you, Jordan, but you are big enough to be picked on), by the world s economy, he is looked upon as a man s man. And, indeed, he is, from a worldly perspective. Tough as nails, strong, confident, fighting for our country, defending our freedoms, dealing with evil around the globe things that you don t even want to discuss. A man s man. Spiritually speaking, he becomes a man s man today, because he stands in this water humbly before his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and says, I am all in for Christ. It maybe humbling, it may be embarrassing, it may take a lot. Let me tell you something: when it comes to being a spiritual man of God, you obey the word of God, whatever it says. That, in part, is what this is all about. Another reason, quite frankly, is indifference. People are very indifferent any more to baptism. It is not talked about, it is not preached about. It is almost thrown on the slagheap of the archaic. And, another reason why a lot of people don t get baptized is defiance. People know they are in sin. They already know they are living a hypocritical life. And, they are not about to stand in this tub and talk about their faith in Jesus Christ, and being all in for Jesus Christ, knowing they are going to walk right out those doors and live the same vulgar life they have been living. They just don t want to do it. By the way, one candidate for baptism has been baptized a couple of times before, but 12
never baptized in front of her local church. It is very significant that you get baptized in front of a body of believers, and hopefully your local church. I have encouraged her with this. Why? Because baptism is a statement to the whole church congregation, I publicly declare I am all in for Christ, and I am giving every one of you license to hold me accountable. Join me in a quick word of prayer. 13
