1 6481 FAUSSETT ROAD HOWELL, MICHIGAN Sunday, November 25, 2018 The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King (Thirty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time), Cycle B John 18:33b-37 Jesus is questioned by Pilate about the charge brought against him that he is King of the Jews. This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church s liturgical year. On this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. Each year we set aside this Sunday to reflect upon this title that we have given to Jesus. In Lectionary Cycle C, we read a portion of the passion from the Gospel of John, which is also part of the Gospel reading proclaimed each year on Good Friday. Parish Directory Fr Gregg A Pleiness... It really works. Last Sunday after 10:30 a future parishioner approached me, handed me his business card with the words: I m a mason. I ll be happy to do the work. The Lord does provide. Advent begins next week. So besides all your Christmas shopping, our Sunday in December are busy: Dec 2: Advent Fair Dec 9: Advent Tea Dec 16 Lunch with Santa. If you don t have your own kids, rent some, steal some (make sure you return them), kidnap your grandkids, everyone has a good time at these events. The Advent mailing has gone out. VINCENT de PAUL CONFERENCE Today as we celebrate Christ the King, may we open the door of our heart so wide that we may listen to the voice of Jesus calling us to help build his kingdom here on earth. This month, through your gifts, the St. Augustine, Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God's kingdom of love and mercy to more than 25 families, providing assistance with food, utilities, and rent. Advent Retreat Focuses on O Antiphons In Western Christian traditions, the O Antiphons which begin with a name of Christ, such as O Wisdom and O Key of David are prayed the week before Christmas. Father Martin Iott, OP, leads an Advent Retreat, The O Antiphons: Prayers of Desire and Promise, from 6:30 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2018, through noon Friday, December 7, 2018 at Weber Retreat and Conference Center in Adrian. Father Martin guides participants in exploring and embracing the spirituality of hopes and dreams expressed in the Hebrew Scriptures and found in the O Antiphons. A Dominican Friar of the Southern Province, Father Martin has been engaged for 30 years in the ministry of preaching retreats and parish missions. The cost for the event which includes meals and snacks is $220 for commuters, $320 per person for double occupancy, and $420 for sngle occupancy. Registration is required. FAITH FORMATION Last week we began class with a group Thanksgiving Prayer. Together we thanked God for His beautiful creation. Then we individually gave thanks for something special in our lives. The retreat house fills up fast, so I try to get our reservations in early. Christ the King "Hail the King of the Jews." The kingship of Christ has always been different than the world expected. Many of Jesus' disciples hoped for an earthly Messiah who would overthrow the Romans. But, as Jesus says in today's Gospel, his kingdom is "not of this world." And yet it is a very real kingdom. Jesus is a very real Lord. And we are called to invite Jesus to be king of our lives. In the early 20th century, disillusionment with authority of all kinds was growing. Revolutions, atheistic thinkers, and World War I contributed to a rejection of faith. In 1925, Pope Pius XI called the Church and the world back to a sense of hope in Christ. He instituted the solemnity of Christ the King on the last Sunday before Advent.
