Introduction Welcome to Move Closer. Move Closer is a twenty-one day journey to find what God has waiting for us this year. Jesus plainly stated Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened. Matt 7:7-8 NLT No matter where we are in our Christian walk, we can always Move Closer to God. Because of the work of Jesus to tear down the barrier between us and God, we can Move Closer to God with confidence and expect that He will receive us gladly. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4:8 ESV When we Move Closer we find ourselves in the presence of an awesome Father who loves us more than we can imagine and is ready to use His great power to do remarkable things in our lives. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.. Eph 3:20 NLT We expect to receive answers to prayer during this 21 day period, however Move Closer is about receiving direction from God for the months and years to come. The final step of Move Closer will be to develop a prayer list that you will use to guide your prayers for the upcoming months. We will be Learning to Listen for the voice of God. Much of the fruit of your 21 days of Move Closer will lie in the notes that you make each day in your prayer journal. These will be a record of your thoughts during a time when you are particularly focused on drawing close to God and hearing from Him. You will gain insight into His overall plan for your year and your life. This will be summarized when you record your Reflections at the end of your journal and create your powerful New Prayer List in the final pages of the journal. 5

Introduction Welcome to Move Closer. You will learn that Letting Go of what is outside of God s plan will produce true freedom. Things that hinder your life will fall away. You will have the opportunity to celebrate throughout the year as God answers your prayers. Your New Prayer List will be much more closely aligned with God s will, and therefore, may be the most powerful prayer list you have ever written down. You will see the following scripture come alive this year: 14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. 1 John 5:14-15 NASU We have set aside these days of Move Closer so we can make the most of the whole year. Our meals for 21 days will be impacted by a fast that each individual chooses as a way to humble our soul to hear from God. Each day will include times of communion with the Lord. As we complete the 21 Days of Move Closer we will also be challenged to move closer Together in relationship to one another. God has designed us to thrive in close relationship to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Your prayers and fasting have the promise of a reward from the Father when done with the motive to Move Closer to Him. "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. Matt 6:6 NASU "But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. Matt 6:17-18 NASU Through Move Closer you can expect God to reward you with answers and open doors in key areas of your life; setting you on a productive and fulfilling course for the year. May God reward you with knowing Him like never before. Pastor Steve 6

Getting To Know Your Journal Using the Journal Developing Your Own Plan The following page in the Journal includes suggestions for developing your own plan to Move Closer to God. Each Day of Move Closer 1. WORSHIP We will follow the instructions from the Word of God in Ps 100:4 (NASU). Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. a. Thanksgiving For each day in Move Closer, a specific scripture is provided in your journal for Thanking God. It is meant to encourage you to reflect on God s past blessings and give thanks to Him. b. Praise There is also a specific scripture given that deals with Praising God. This is to encourage you to think about God s greatness and to honor Him by expressing your appreciation of who He is. 2. READING THE BIBLE Each day your Prayer Journal will feature a special collection of scriptures for your consideration. Reading the Word of God builds our faith to receive the answers to prayer. Many of us will also follow the reading plan in the One Year Bible. Others will use a different plan. 3. PRAYER Each day will have three areas of focus for your prayer time: 1. Hearing from God - a request for Him to reveal His will for you, 2. Corporate Prayer Focus a prayer which everyone participating will pray that day 3. Personal Prayers - requests from your own Personal Prayer List. You can begin now to list prayer requests on page 11, Preliminary Personal Prayer List. 4. JOURNALING There is also a place each day () for you to write your own thoughts; whether it pertains to the requests you are making, guidance God provides, or answers you receive to your prayers. Reflecting Finally, the last pages of the Journal (Reflections and My New Prayer List) are for use both during the 21 Days and the weeks following. You may make entries on these pages at any time during the 21 Days. 1. Reflections - What Did I Hear From God? What Answers to Prayer Did I Experience? What Will I Do About It? As you continue to listen to God, you can write down (page 61) your impressions that came during the 21 days. You may also want to record the important things you feel you should do because of what you have heard. 2. My New Prayer List for this year is compiled on page 63. This could be the best prayer list you have ever prayed. It will serve as a good source of your goals for the year. 7

Personalizing Your Approach Using the Journal Making My Plan for 21 Days to Move Closer 1. How will I make Worship a part of each day? Your Journal includes scriptures of thanksgiving and praise which you can read aloud. Many of us will listen to Christian music and possibly sing along in worship at various times during the day. My plan is as follows: 2. How will I keep a regular schedule of Reading God s Word? There are a number of Bible verses listed in the Journal for each day. These verses relate to the subjects that will be emphasized in prayer on that specific day. It will be of great value to read and meditate on those scriptures. In addition many people have a regular plan of reading the Word. For example: Read the One Year Bible, Read the New Testament portion of the One Year Bible, Read just the Psalms and Proverbs readings in the One Year Bible, Read a chapter from a book of the Bible daily, or Any other plan of your choosing. My plan is as follows: 3. How will I set aside my time for Personal Prayer? For example: Pray first thing in the morning (5 min., 1 hour, etc.), Attend prayer meetings at the church, Pray during a meal that I skip, etc. My plan is as follows: 8

Personalizing Your Approach Using the Journal 4. How will I carryout my Personal Fasting? For example: Do the Daniel fast or a modified Daniel fast (like no meat, no caffeine, no sweets, etc.), Skip one meal per day, Skip two meals per day, Don t eat out at restaurants, or Some combination of methods of fasting. The important thing is to have a plan and stick with it. My plan is as follows: 9

Scriptures for January 8th Mark 16:15-20 NASU 15 And He said to them, " Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 " He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. 17 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." 19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. Acts 1:8 NASU 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." READING OF SCRIPTURE (spiritual gifts) In addition to your own reading plan, read 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 and 1 Corinthians 14:1, 4-5, 12-15, 18-19, 26, 32, and (listed on the next page). PRAYER 1. 19 Scriptures for January 9th 1 Cor 12:4-11 NASU 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. 1 Cor 14:1, 4-5, 12-15, 18-19, 26, 32, NASU 1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying. 12 So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church. 13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue. 26 What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 39 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40 But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner. 19

January 10th Worship: Follow your own plan to make worship a part of every day. THANKING GOD I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Ps 57:9-10 NLT Prayer: Thank God for His unfailing love. Prayer: Compliment God for His faithfulness. READING OF SCRIPTURE (bearing fruit) In addition to your own reading plan, read Gen 1:27-28, Gen 9:1, John 15:1-8, and Gal 5:22-23 (listed on the next page). PRAYER 1. Hearing from God - Pray these first three prayers every day of the 21 Days. Record in the thoughts that God gives you as you pray these prayers every day. Later they will be used to write your Reflections and My New Prayer List at the end of the journal. a) Give me a revelation of Your will for me. Show me where I fit in Your plans. b) Show me the goals that I should pursue this year. c) Help me to hear what You are saying to me as I meditate on Your Word and Pray. 2. Corporate Prayer Focus - Pray that as we stay Close to Jesus ( abide in Him ) we grow spiritually and bear fruit in these three areas: a) The fruit of the Spirit in our character (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control). b) The fruit of souls (people being saved and following the Lord). c) The fruit of answered prayers. 3. Personal Prayers - Pray for something on your own Personal Prayer List. 20

Gen 9:1 NASU And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, " Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. John 15:1-8 NASU 1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3 " You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 "My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Gal 5:22-23 NASU 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 21

January 11th Worship: Follow your own plan to make worship a part of every day. THANKING GOD Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT Prayer: Thank God for something you are grateful for. PRAISING GOD From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the LORD is to be praised. ~ Ps 113:3 NASU Prayer: Compliment God for something that is good about Him. READING OF SCRIPTURE (love) In addition to your own reading plan, read Matt 22:35-40, 1 Cor 13:1-14:1, and John 15:12 (listed on the next page). 2. Corporate Prayer Focus - Pray for Love to be present: a) Pray that the two greatest commandments (to love God and to love people) would increase in our lives. b) Since God is love, ask for His presence in everything you think, say, and do to such an extent that a God-kind of love comes from you. c) Pray that the bond between believers is so strong that nothing can turn us away from each other. d) Pray that love becomes our motivating force. e) Pray that our love is with actions and not only words. f) Pray to give the greatest expression of love possible; to lead a person to faith in Christ. 3. Personal Prayers - Pray for something on your own Personal Prayer List. 22

Scriptures for January 11th Matt 22:34-40 NASU 35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' 38 "This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' 40 " On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." 1 Cor 13:1-14:1 NASU 1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. John 15:12 NASU 12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 23

January 12th Worship: Follow your own plan to make worship a part of every day. THANKING GOD Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. ~ Hebrews 12:28 NLT Prayer: Thank God for something you are grateful for. PRAISING GOD I will call on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, for he saves me from my enemies.~ Ps 18:3 NASB Prayer: Compliment God for something that is good about Him. READING OF SCRIPTURE (unity) In addition to your own reading plan, read John 17:18-23, Phil 2:1-4, 1 Cor 10:16-17, 1 John 1:7, Heb 13:17 and 1 Peter 4:8 (listed on the next page). PRAYER 1. Hearing from God - Pray these first three prayers every day of the 21 Days. Record in the thoughts that God gives you as you pray these prayers every day. Later they will be used to write 2. your Reflections and My New Prayer List at the end of the journal. a) Give me a revelation of Your will for me. Show me where I fit in Your plans. b) Show me the goals that I should pursue this year. c) Help me to hear what You are saying to me as I meditate on Your Word and Pray. 2. Corporate Prayer Focus - Pray for unity in the Body of Christ as a result of Moving Closer to Him: a) Pray for unity in our own local church so that all of our work will be focused in the direction that the Lord leads and that we will be an unstoppable force for the gospel in our community. b) Pray that the prayer of Jesus (that we may all be one John 17:11, 21, and 22) would be answered among all the different churches. c) Pray that error which separates believers would give way to truth. d) Pray that love would cover a multitude of disagreements among believers. e) Ask God for direction for how to relate to those who have doctrines and practices that seem wrong to us. f) Pray for opportunities such as National Day of Prayer, Community Thanksgiving Services, Habitat for Humanity or Life Chain and for the believers there to fellowship, serve and worship in unity. 3. Personal Prayers - Pray for something on your own Personal Prayer List. 24

Scriptures for January 12th John 17:18-23 NASU 18 "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 "For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. 20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Phil 2:1-4 NASU 1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 1 Cor 10:16-17 NASU 16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread. 1 John 1:7 NASU 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. Heb 13:17 NASU 17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. 1 Peter 4:8 NASU 8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 25

Scriptures for January 13th Rom 13:1-7 NASU 1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. 1 Tim 2:1-4 NASU 1 First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 27

Scriptures for January 16th 2 Tim 3:1-17 NASU 1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. 6 For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. 9 But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes's and Jambres's folly was also. 10 Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! 12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 35

Scriptures for January 22nd Isa 53:1-5 NASU 1 Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. Matt 8:14-17 NASU 14 When Jesus came into Peter's home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and waited on Him. 16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: "HE HIMSELF TOOK OUR INFIRMITIES AND CARRIED AWAY OUR DISEASES." Mark 16:17-18 NASU 17 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." James 5:14-15 NASU 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 49

Because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15 " But not one has done so who has a remnant of the Spirit.
