Help Our Religious Education Children and the Delaware County SPCA The children are asking the parishioners of Sacred Heart and Saint Hedwig s to help them with their donations to the SPCA. The Feast of the Epiphany Is one of the oldest Christian feasts, though, throughout the centuries, it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany comes from a Greek verb meaning "to reveal," and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man. Mahatma Gandhi The Epiphany Every human person will find meaning in life by being open to God. The Three Kings, were not Jewish, they came from the Orient. Some scholars believe that they began their travels together from Persia, while others believe that they came from three different regions of the Orient, one of them maybe even being China. Obviously, the Magi were not part of the chosen people. They were not Jews. They were part of the vast populace of people extended throughout the known world at that time who were called pagans, or gentiles. The Three Kings are men who are left unsatisfied by their possessions of wealth, fame and power, and search for the only one who can satisfy the deepest aspirations of the human heart. They longed to find the very meaning of their existence. After a long and difficult search, they discover the place where he lays, and they encounter the One who has come to redeem us and fulfill our intense longings. They know who he is because they bring him the most appropriate gifts: gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, and myrrh for a victim. They know that he is the Messiah, Jesus the Christ, the only one through whom salvation can be found. Because the Three Kings were open, they were given the gift of faith. Through this gift they searched, they found, and they believed. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother" (Matthew 2: 10-11). The quest of the Magi reminds us that God is truly with us. Sometimes during our journey, clarity disappears and we begin to doubt. Let us remember that Jesus is always with us. He is Emmanuel, God with us. Like the shining star, he is present in the tabernacle, just as he was present in the manger of Bethlehem. The Solemnity of the Epiphany is not only about three wise men that visited the manger. Instead, this Biblical event speaks to us about the plan of God for the entire human race. "Lord, every nation on earth will adore you." 092-3

On weekdays when the conditions are bad enough for the area schools to be closed there will be NO MASS held at Sacred Heart. This is for your safety. Father Mike Official End of the Christmas Season According to the Catholic Church the official end of the Christmas Season comes as we celebrate The Baptism of The Lord. It is tradition to keep your holiday decorations until this Feast. This year The Baptism of The Lord falls on January 12, Calendars Please feel free to take home a 2014 calendar! They can be found in the vestibule and the Holly Street entrances of the church. Broadway Bar & Grille and Clam Tavern COATS for KIDS Campaign Through February 28, 2014 patrons will get $5 in Broadway Bucks good toward food and beverage purchases, for gently used kids winter coats which patrons can leave with staff or deposit in the drop box at the Broadway Bar & Grille. "With all the terrible things we hear about in the news, it's nice to know that there is still a lot of good in people's hearts," says Tony Blanche owner of both restaurants and the man behind the COATS for KIDS. "This is a great way for people to get involved to make things just a little better for kids facing tough times." Catholic Charities Night at the Sixers! It will save on fuel and keep the Church much warmer Read Sunday s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12. Gospel Summary The magi from the East came to Jerusalem and asked where the child who was King of the Jews might be found. Herod was concerned about this birth, and as a result had worked up the total population of Jerusalem as well. To the magi, he acted as though he wanted, like them, to go and worship this child. He asked the magi to figure out where the child was and then come and tell him after they had found the child. Of course, we know that in his heart, Herod only wanted to destroy Jesus. And we also know that nothing can be hidden from God, who knew Herod s heart. God sent an angel to the magi in a dream and told them to go home a different way and avoid Herod. Reflection for Families Children love this story because it s filled with things they treasure: gifts, adventure, danger, mystery. Through these elements, Matthew has made it clear that the magi are foreigners from the Gentile world in Matthew s day. It is reassuring for us to know and to help our children come to understand that God welcomes all people of the world to the family of God. By our Baptism, we are part of a family of faith, and as parents we spend our lives leading our children in that faith and demonstrating to them how we live our own faith.
