The First Weekend in Advent Dec. 1-2, 2018 CLC Carmel T DIVINE SERVICE T As We Gather: Today we start a new sermon series called What They Learned. In this case they are some of the enduring, fictional pop culture figures of the season Ebenezer Scrooge, George Bailey, The Grinch, and Charlie Brown. All were characters transformed by their experiences. God also transforms his people during this season, through his Spirit, his Word and sacraments, and often through significant interactions with other Christians. This week we reflect on Scrooge, startled by the reality of his situation through encounters with three spirits. For us there is a new reality, too. It comes in a manger, God becoming human in the fullness of time. (Galatians 4:4-7) And we are changed forever. Preservice Music The Advent of Our King... Haan Savior of the Nations, Come... 4 T Service of the Word T Old Testament: Jeremiah 33:14-16 (God promises a Savior from the family of King David.) 14 The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the gracious promise I made to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. 4

5 29 He told them this parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 34 Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. Keep us alert for signs of your presence in the world around us. Send us as healing oil and sheltering comfort to those in need and make us bold in testifying to the light of Jesus Christ our Lord.
