3 St. Mary on the Hill May 15, 2016 I love Pentecost. On this day, we commemorate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples. It is not only a day to celebrate the birth of the Church, but it is also a time to celebrate the presence of God s Spirit active in the Church today. The exciting thing for me as pastor of this faith community is that more and more of you are taking the gospel seriously; you are living gospel values and when that happens, the church begins to come alive with new life. There are hundreds of people who practice a ministry in our faith community. Some are talented teachers, some are musically talented, some visit the sick and homebound, some welcome inquirers in our RCIA program, some work with our young people in Youth Ministry, Scouting and Sports, some help with the Jesus Caritas Fraternity of Priests that I head up, some help Sr. Janet at Catholic Social Services to reach out to the poor in our midst, others are involved in helping the homeless get some stability in their lives through Family Promise, some serve in a liturgical position. I could go on and on. None of these ministers are on the fringe of the parish. All make up the heart of our faith community because we are all united by the Holy Spirit. God s grace is active in so many different ways in our parish. And it is good to rejoice in the activity of the Holy Spirit in our midst. But it is also good to be honest and say that there are still too many times that we fail to live in the Spirit of God s Love. We still are at times too cliquish and too gossipy. There are still too many times when our stubborn hearts are closed off to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. So, we come to this Pentecost Sunday rejoicing in what God has already accomplished in and through our faith community and praying that more and more we may keep our hearts open to the action of the Holy Spirit in our midst. So, this day, this Pentecost, I ask all of you to think out your involvement with the ministries of this faith community. If you are involved, I thank you for the vibrancy that you ve helped to create. If you are not as involved as you might like to be, I d ask you to consider why not? As you spend some time in quiet prayer and you listen to that inner voice of the Holy Spirit within you, what is God asking you to do? Perhaps, God wants you to be more focused on your spouse or your parenting than on your career. Perhaps, there is some family healing that God wants you to work on. Perhaps, you see a need in our parish or in your community that needs to be addressed. Or perhaps you d like to talk to me about some of the special needs that I see in our faith community. Specifically, I am looking for: I. a Volunteer Coordinator our parish needs someone who can help parishioners discern their gifts and guide them to specific parish ministries that could use their help. II. a Family Life Minister - at a recent parish meeting it was determined that our Family Life Ministry needs to be comprehensive and not just focused on one particular age group. III. a Coordinator of our Faith Sharing Groups the good news is that there are a good number of people in our parish who meet on a regular basis to share faith. The bad news is that most of them started organically, which is great but as they are flying under the radar, I ve no way of offering guidance or resources to them. IV. a Parish Advocate for ministry with people with disabilities who would Incorporate a disability perspective into all areas of our faith community so as to help us all to assume our responsibility to welcome and include parishioners with disabilities. Initially, these would not be paid positions and at the beginning might require 6 to 8 hours a week. The parish of course would cover the expenses involved for training in these areas. If any of these positions intrigue you, please take some time this week to discern if the Lord is calling you to be involved and then set up an appointment to talk to me. What does discernment involve? Discernment begins by welcoming the presence of the Holy Spirit as our guide, and seeking the wisdom of others as your companions on the journey to living out God s will for our lives Discernment seeks to align our life s direction and decisions with our sense and experience of God s call Discernment is intentional it doesn t just happen; and it requires that we be radically open to where the Holy Spirit might lead us even if it is to unexpected places Discernment is about gratitude for all the blessings and gifts that God has bestowed upon us. It is a gratitude that expresses itself in a generosity of heart; a willingness to pay it forward. On the Way Home: Jesus said, Peace be with you, and the disciples first task after receiving the Holy Spirit was to forgive sins. Do you need to be a more peaceful and forgiving person? Forgiveness is such an important part of bringing God s love to our world. Who do you need to forgive? Is there anyone that you should ask to forgive you?
