3 THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT WAITING IN JOYFUL HOPE Pope Francis tells us that Advent is a time of waiting for the Lord, who will not only visit us all on Christmas, but also, will visit each one of us in our own heart. As the four weeks of the Advent season proceed toward Christmas, we experience more and more that the risen Christ is drawing near to us in our hearts and in all the circumstances of our lives. This growing awareness of His presence then begins to change everything for us, by awakening in us a growing sense of hope, a new feeling of joy, and a greater desire to create peace by imitating Jesus example of mercy and loving service to others. THEMES OF THE WEEKS OF ADVENT Each week of Advent represents our growing faith that Jesus is coming and takes us on a journey from hope to celebration. Hope. The First Week of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet s Candle. It represents the hope that Christ will come to us and knowing that when we reach out to Him, He will lead us through the darkness. Faith. The Second Week of Advent symbolizes Faith with the Bethlehem Candle reminding us of Mary and Joseph s journey to Bethlehem. This week we focus on peace and preparation. As we are called to prepare for the coming of the Lord, we may enjoy the peace we have with God through the birth of Christ. Joy. The Third Week of Advent is all about joy with the Shepherd s Candle. It is also known as Gaudete Sunday, Gaudete means rejoice in Latin. This week, we are reminded of the joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. It is a turning point in Advent where we move from hope and preparation to rejoicing. Love. In this last week before Christmas, we focus on God s love as we prepare for the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ with the Angel s Candle reminding us of the message of the angels: Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to people of good will. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The days are coming when the LORD will fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah (Jeremiah 33:14-16). Psalm To you, O Lord, I lift my soul (Psalm 25). Second Reading Abound in love for one another and for all (1 Thessalonians 3:12 4:2). Gospel Stand erect and raise your heads; your redemption is at hand (Luke 21:25-28, 34-36). +SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION+ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8 SPECIAL MASS SCHEDULE Friday, Dec. 7, 5:30 PM Vigil Mass; Saturday, Dec. 8, 6:45 AM, 8:30AM, & 12:10 PM THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION+ It is important to understand what the Immaculate Conception is, and what it is not. The doctrine tells us that Mary, conceived in the normal way through an act of love by her mother and father (St. Joachim and St. Anne), was born free of original sin and its effects from the first moment of her existence. This special favor was conferred on her because of her role in God s plan for our salvation. Historically, this doctrine has sometimes been misunderstood as the conception of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit in the feast we know as the Annunciation. Instead, the Immaculate Conception celebrates the special gift of God s grace to Mary because she to be the mother of Jesus, God s chosen agent to bring about our salvation. We hail Mary in faith and prayer because she is full of grace, and because the Lord is with her. In other words, Mary was filled with God s life well before the Messiah was conceived in her womb. With the sixteenth Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes, Thursday, March 25, 1858, Bernadette asks The Lady her name, repeating the question three times. The Lady smiles at her and then Bernadette gets the courage to ask The Lady her name for a fourth time! Now, she is given the answer: I am the Immaculate Conception. Herewith the Blessed Virgin confirms to all the truth of her Immaculate Conception. 4 THE YEAR OF GRACE DECEMBER 2, 2018 TO NOVEMBER 30, 2019 The word translated grace in the New Testament comes from the Greek word charis, which means favor, blessing, or kindness. We can all extend grace to others; but when the word grace is used in connection with God, it takes on a more powerful meaning. Grace is God choosing to bless us. Grace is the main theme that ties all of Scripture together. It is expressed in the promises of God throughout the Bible and is embodied perfectly in the person of Jesus Christ. The entirety of Scripture tells the story of God s grace. Every story echoes the promises of God. It s that seed message of grace that is planted and then begins to flourish throughout the Old Testament and comes to full manifest flower in Jesus Christ. In Western Christian theology, grace has been defined, not as a created substance of any kind, but as "the love and mercy given to us by God because God desires us to have it, not necessarily because of anything we have done to earn it." In 1 Corinthians 15:10 Paul writes, But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Paul knows that any work that he did was ultimately not his own doing but through the grace of God. The grace of God is the most beautiful and powerful thing we will ever encounter, but it is also the most difficult concept for us to wrap our minds around. Grace pushes back against our understanding of what is fair and what people deserve. But the message of grace is one that the entire world needs to hear. Grace is love that seeks you out when you have nothing to give in return. Grace is love coming at you that has nothing to do with you. Grace is being loved when you are unlovable. The cliché definition of grace is unconditional love. So, when God is giving food to the hungry, when He is giving rest to the weary, strength to the weak, victory to those who shouldn t have victory at all, pardon to those who are sinful, faithfulness to the unfaithful all of these are means by which God s grace is on display and unfolding ever more fully throughout the Bible until it culminates in Jesus Christ. Ultimately, grace is God bestowing wonderful blessings and giving the greatest treasure to people who cannot always provide for themselves. In this coming Year of Grace, you may wish to think of ways God s amazing grace has blessed you in your life. Amazing Grace, indeed! Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. Psalm 46:10 Even a few short moments in the silent presence of the Lord is a precious treasure, for it is in this silence that the Lord speaks to us. NEXT WEEKEND S - SECOND COLLECTION RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT This annual appeal benefits 31,000 elderly sisters, brothers and religious order priests, women and men who have consecrated their lives to serving God and His Church. In thanksgiving for their faithful service, please be as generous as possible. ST. CATHARINE S CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS CONCERT & PAGEANT NEXT SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9 th, 6:00 PM Our Children s Christmas Concert & Pageant will take place in the Church next Sunday, December 9 th, beginning with our Concert at 6:00 PM. The Christmas Pageant, beginning at 6:30 PM, is a beautiful, reverent telling, through song and action, of the events surrounding the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. PARISH CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING NEXT SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9 th The beautiful evergreen tree in front of St. Catharine s Church was dedicated in memory of Rosemary D Andrea, and, each year, is lovingly decorated by her family. The Christmas Tree Lighting will take place following next Sunday s Christmas Concert and Pageant. OUR PARISH CRÈCHE Each year, our beautiful Parish Crèche is constructed by our Parishioner, Dave Dinan, in loving memory of his beloved Father and Mother, Dan and Rita Dinan. DOMINIC S HOME FOR ADULT MEN St. Dominic s Home for Adult Men serves individuals who are developmentally disabled and have multiple handicaps. Gifts may include NEW socks, t-shirts, sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves, and grooming items, e.g., combs, brushes, etc. ADOPT A FAMILY AT CHRISTMAS You may choose to adopt one of the families right here in our parish, who, for one reason or another, find themselves in need at this time. With your kindness, we would like to help provide them with some Christmas presents so that they have something under the tree for themselves and their children. Please call the PREP office at , and bring a little joy to someone this Christmas. GIVING TREE Families in need within our parish have given us Wish Lists for their children, but we believe these parents need to experience the joy of Christmas, too! Please consider donating gift certificate for a manicure, haircut, slippers, a gift card to a restaurant, move, etc. Please take an ornament from the Giving Tree in the lobby, buy the item noted and return the unwrapped item under the tree. We are asking that all items be returned no later than Sunday, December 16 th.
