7 FOREWORD I was deeply moved as I read John Bunyan: The People s Pilgrim, and realised how little I actually knew about this amazing man and the difficult period of history in which he lived. I was booked to preach in Bedford around the same time I was reading this, so that was very special. I recommend that those who read this book try to visit Bedford, especially the museum dedicated to John Bunyan. This book is important to me as we at OM (Operation Mobilisation) have distributed thousands of copies of The Pilgrim s Progress in many forms around the world. It is my hope that those who read this book will want to read (or have already read) that great classic. Never did I believe that we would come to a day when so few people even know the name John Bunyan, especially outside the walls of the church. My prayer is that many who don t go to church may still find this book unique and interesting; certainly people interested in English history will find it special. I hope people will get a few extra copies to give away to their friends. One of the powerful messages of this book is how God works within the culture of the day and how in the midst of so many difficulties, He continues His work of grace. Yes, here is a great man with all his humanness who manifested the GRACE of God. That s my prayer for those who take the time to read this special book about such a unique and special person. 8 TO ANNE, WITH ALL MY LOVE PERSONAL NOTE Half way through writing this book my wife Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have watched her come through a difficult operation and subsequently undergo a gruelling course of chemotherapy treatment, followed by radiotherapy. It has been a hard journey indeed. John Bunyan s suffering was in some ways quite different to hers, but his example of keeping close to God in tough times has encouraged and sustained us both. There were a number of occasions when I considered weaving our own experiences into The People s Pilgrim, but after some hesitation and a few false starts I have decided against that. This is mainly because the book really ought to focus on John Bunyan and the ways God worked in him and through him, not on us. But also if I m completely honest the events of Anne s illness are still too close and painful for me to write about in a clear and connected way. Nevertheless, our own questions and struggles do stand behind my writing in the application sections of some of the chapters. We thank God for the amazing peace and strength He has given us and we face the future as a couple full of faith and hope knowing, as I said at one point in Chapter Seven, that our times are in His hands. This book is dedicated to the brave and beautiful Anne, with immense gratitude for twenty-one years of very special pilgrimage together and looking forward, God willing, to many more years ahead. 9 INTRODUCTION FROM PREACHER TO PRISON On 12 November 1660, John Bunyan travelled the short distance from his home in Bedford to the tiny hamlet of Lower Samsel, where he was due to preach. The group that had come together for worship was small, numbering no more than forty people. Like many such rural congregations, they had no church building. In the summer they would often meet outdoors under a hawthorn tree in some woods, but this was a cold November day and so they had gathered in a farmhouse to await Bunyan s arrival. They were ordinary men and women, many of them poor and unschooled. Their speaker also had little by way of formal education. He was a simple tradesman, a tinker or brazier, someone who eked out a living making and mending pots, pans and kettles. But he was known in the locality as a lively, effective preacher, and as he arrived at Lower Samsel he knew what the subject of his message would be. He was going to speak, as simply and as clearly as he could, about the need for faith in Jesus Christ. All this might seem harmless enough. However, meetings like this had been declared illegal by the government. And on this day the preacher was in particular danger. 10 JOHN BUNYAN THE PEOPLE S PILGRIM was especially tense and nervous. He soon learned why. It was rumoured the authorities knew where they were meeting and, what s more, that a warrant had been issued for the preacher s arrest. What should they do? It was suggested they just abandon the service. Why take such a risk when they could simply disperse and then meet in secret on some other occasion? Bunyan went outside for a moment to consider his options. After a brief struggle with his feelings he determined they should go ahead with the meeting. He had often spoken about the need for courage in the face of persecution; now he had to back up his words with deeds. Bravely he turned and walked back towards the house. The meeting began with prayer, but before they could go any further the local constable and another man burst in to arrest Bunyan. There was no time for the prepared message, but before he was led away he did manage to shout out a few words of encouragement to the frightened people. He told them to be of good cheer for they had not done anything wrong. Rather they were being persecuted for their faith. They shouldn t be discouraged but instead press on to know Jesus better. Before he could say any more, he was hustled out of the building into the cold November air.
