A Chosen People: General statements showing that God has an elect people, that He predestined them to salvation, and thus to eternal life. Deuteronomy 10:14, 15: Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. 15 Yet the LORD set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. Psalm 33:12: Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! Psalm 65:4: Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! 5 Psalm 106:5: that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance. Romans 8:33: Who shall bring any charge against God s elect? It is God who justifies. 5

6 Romans 11:28: As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. Colossians 3:12: Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 1 Thessalonians 5:9: For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, Titus 1:1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 1 Peter 1:1,2: It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 1 Peter 2:8, 9: and A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Revelation 17:14: They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful. B. Election Not Based on Foreseen Responses: Before the foundation of the world, God chose particular individuals unto salvation. His selection was not based upon any foreseen response or act performed by those chosen. Faith and good works are the result, not the cause of God s choice. 1. God did the choosing. 6

7 Mark 13:20: And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. 1 Thessalonians 1:4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 2. God s choice was made before the foundation of the world. Ephesians 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. 8 foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. Revelation 17:8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come. 4. John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 6. God s choice was not based upon foreseen faith. Faith is the result and therefore the evidence of God s election, not the cause or ground of His choice. Acts 13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. Acts 18:27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, Philippians 1:29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, Philippians 2:12,13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 1 Thessalonians 1:4,5 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 9

James 2:5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 7. It is by faith and good works that one confirms his calling and election. 2 Peter 1:5-11: For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with 7 steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. C. Election Precedes Salvation: Election is not salvation but is unto salvation. Just as the president-elect does not become the president of the United States until he is inaugurated, those chosen unto salvation are not saved until they are regenerated by the Spirit and justified by faith in Christ. Romans 11:7 What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, 10

11 2 Timothy 2:10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. D. Sovereign Mercy: Election was based on the sovereign, distinguishing mercy of Almighty God. It was not man s will but God s will that determined which sinners would be shown mercy and saved. Exodus 33:19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name The LORD. And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. Deuteronomy 7:6,7: For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, Matthew 20:15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity? Will what is molded say to its molder, Why have you made me like this? 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory 24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? Romans 11:4-6; But what is God s reply to him? I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal. 5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. Romans 11:33-36: Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? 35 Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid? 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Ephesians 1:5: he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, E. Sovereignty over All Things: The doctrine of election is but a part of the much broader Biblical doctrine of God s absolute sovereignty. The Scriptures not only teach that God predestined certain individuals unto eternal life, but that all events, both small and great, come about as the result of God s eternal decree. The Lord God rules over heaven and earth with absolute control; nothing comes to pass apart from His eternal purpose. 1 Chronicles 29:10-12: Therefore David blessed the LORD in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: Blessed are you, O 12

13 LORD, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all Job 42:1, 2: Then Job answered the LORD and said: 2 I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Psalm 115:3 Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Psalm 135:6 to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever; Isaiah 14:24, 27: The LORD of hosts has sworn: As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand, Isaiah 46:9-11: remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose, 11 calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it. Isaiah 55:11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Jeremiah 32:17 Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. Daniel 4:35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, What have you done? 13

In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. Predestination is a combination of destination a point toward which we are moving, but have not yet reached; and pre relates to the question of time; from all eternity, before the universe was ever created. God is the agent of predestination, while human beings are the object of his action. Predestination refers to God s sovereign plan for human beings, decreed by him in eternity. It also includes whatever comes to pass in time and space. Election God s choosing of certain individuals to be saved. It is the benevolent predestination that results in the salvation of those who are elect. Reprobation the predestination of those who are not elect. 4 What is Reformed Theology, R.C. 15 Definition of Predestination From all eternity God decided to save some members of the human race and to let the rest of the human race perish. God made a choice He chose some individuals to be saved unto everlasting blessedness in heaven, and he chose others to pass over, allowing them to suffer the consequences of their sins, eternal punishment in hell. 1. Conditional or Unconditional? A. The Issue: On what does God base His decision to elect some and not others? B. Unconditional: The Reformed View is God elects with no conditions attached, either foreseen or otherwise. C. Conditional: Armenian View is God elects certain people to salvation, but only if they meet certain conditions. D. Prescient View: refers to foreknowledge; the idea that God looks into the future to see who will respond in faith to the gospel and on the basis of prior foreknowledge, God chooses those whom He knows will have faith E. Romans 8:29-30: For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. F. Problem with Prescient View: Because foreknowledge precedes predestination, it isn t necessarily the basis of predestination. It says nothing about whether this foreknowledge includes the person s meeting some condition for election. G. The Golden Chain of Salvation: 1) Foreknowledge 2) Predestination 3) Calling 4) Justification 5) Glorification 15

16 H. The Process of Calling 1) External Call the proclaiming of the gospel, which many hear but reject. Justification is not by hearing the call but by believing the call. 2) Internal Call (effectual calling) which is not given to everyone, but is the inner work of the Holy Spirit, giving them a new heart and thus enabling them to repent and believe and be justified. 2. The Order (Ordo Salutis) of Salvation A. Reformed View: God predestines some people to receive a divine call that others do not receive. Only the predestined, or the elect, receive this call, and only those who receive this call are justified. We are elected unto faith and justification; thus faith is a result of election B. Prescient View: makes faith a condition of election. This is the fundamental difference between conditional election and unconditional election, between Calvinism and Arminianism. C. The Golden Chain of Salvation: From all eternity God foreknew His elect. He had an idea of their identity in His mind before He created them. He foreknew them not only in the sense of having a prior idea of their personal identities; but also in the sense of foreloving them. The Reformed view is that all whom God has foreknown, He has also predestined to be inwardly called, justified, and glorified. D. Unconditional Election: God sovereignly brings to pass the salvation of His elect and only of His elect (WCF 3:3-5). 5 out of his mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other think in the creature, as conditions; or causes moving him thereunto, E. The Sovereignty of God s Mercy & Grace: 15 For he says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. G. The Basis of God s Choice, His Own Good Pleasure: Ephesians1:3-5: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, H. However His Choices Not Capricious or Arbitrary: Arbitrary means for no reason at all. God has His reasons known only to Himself. He chooses according to His own pleasure, which is His divine right. If it pleases God it must be good, as there is no evil in God. I. Jacob & Esau 1) Two distinct historical individuals. 2) Not only brothers but twin brothers. 3) God elected before the children were born or had done anything good or evil. 4) It was not anything God saw in terms of their actions and decisions in the future, but He sovereign choice of Jacob over Esau: It is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. 5) The decisive factor in election was not the willingness of the believer, but on God s sovereign grace. 3. 18 A. Conditional View of Election: 1) Protects God from being unfair, arbitrary, or unjust, choosing some without considering their own choices. 2) Protects human freedom B. Unconditional View of Election: 1) Charge that God is unrighteous (not fair or right ) to bestow His grace on some but not on others i.e. Jacob over Esau. 2) It is God s prerogative to dispense His grace however He decides to, as He owed neither Jacob nor Esau any measure of grace. 3) God, to be fair, ought to give grace equally. It is this oughtness that is foreign to the biblical concept of grace. All of fallen humanity is guilty of sin before God and no one has any claim to God s mercy. It is up to God, as He pleases, to grant mercy as a gift to whomever He wishes. 4) Those who are saved have received God s sovereign grace; those who are not saved are simply recipients of God s justice. They have received what they deserve. If mercy is deserved, it is not really mercy, but justice. C. Unconditional Election in Biblical History 1) Though God is never unjust to anyone, he does not treat all people equally or the same. 2) Abraham: Abrahamic Covenant, calling Abraham, a pagan, out of Ur of the Chaldees, that he didn t do with other pagans. 3) Moses: God revealed Himself to him in a manner He did not grant to Pharaoh. 4) Saul of Tarsus: God revealed Christ to him, a blasphemer, that he did not reveal to Pilate. 5) We today: Why have you come to faith when a close friend or relative, exposed to the same influences, have not? Are you nicer, smarter, etc.? To believe we deserve salvation more than others is the worst of pride. 4. Election and Moral Inability A. Serious Difficulty of Conditional View: Semi-Pelagian 1) They must assume that fallen persons are morally capable of responding positively to the gospel. 18

19 2) This assumes that original sin weakens the will but does not make it morally unable to incline itself to the things of God. 3) Total Depravity if it is true, moral inability follows, and election must be unconditional. 4) Left to themselves, no fallen person would choose Christ. B. Salvation is a Grant from the Father: John 6:64-68 But there are some of you who do not believe. (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father. 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, Do you want to go away as well? 68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 1) Jesus says that no one can come to Him without a grant from the Father. 2) Jesus knew from the beginning who those elect were. 3) Why were many offended and walked away? Because Jesus was teaching they can t believe unless it has been granted to them by God. 4) Simon Peter s reaction, in contrast to the many who walked away, said, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. C. God Must Draw the Sinner: John 6:43-44 Jesus answered them, Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 1) Draw to compel by irresistible superiority to compel not just be wooed by the Holy Spirit, but compelled to come. 2) James 2:6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? It is the same word as drag here. D. Arminian Problems with Drawing 1) God draws (woos) encourages the sinner to come of their own will. 19

20 2) Does God woo or draw all men equally? 3) Why do some people respond favorably to the Holy Spirit s wooing? E. Reformed Answer: faith itself is a gift given to the elect. God Himself creates the faith in the believer s heart. God fulfills the necessary condition for salvation, and he does so without condition. F. Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. 5. Double Predestination A. Single Predestination 1) Reprobation God s decreeing from all eternity that certain unfortunate people are destined for damnation. 2) Single Predestination though some are predestined to election, no one is predestined to damnation or reprobation. God chooses some whom He will definitely save, but leaves open the opportunity for salvation for the rest. They can somehow become elect by responding positively to the gospel. 3) Logic Unless predestination is universal, either to universal election or universal reprobation, it must be double in some sense. 4) The question then is not if predestination is double, but how it is double. B. Double Predestination 1) Equal Ultimacy Just as God intervenes in the lives of the elect to create faith in their hearts, so he similarly intervenes in the hearts of the reprobate to work unbelief ( heart hardening ). 2) Classical Reformed Theology rejects the doctrine of equal ultimacy ( hyper-calvinism ). 3) The Reformed view makes a crucial distinction between God s positive and negative decrees. 20

21 4) God positively decrees the election of some and negatively decrees the reprobation of others. This is the manner by which God brings His decrees to pass in history. 5) The Positive Side God actively intervenes in the lives of the elect to work faith in their hearts. 6) The Negative Side not to God s working unbelief in the hearts of the reprobate, but simply to His passing them by and withholding His regenerating grace from them. 7) Calvin: that God by His eternal goodwill (for which there was no other cause than His own (purpose), appointed those whom He pleased unto salvation, rejecting all the rest; and that those whom He blessed with this free adoption to be His sons He illumines by His Holy Spirit, that they may receive the life which is offered to them in Christ; while others, continuing of their own will in unbelief, are left destitute of the light of faith, in total darkness. 6 8) Orthodox Calvinism teaches to God so works in the hearts of the elect as to make them willing and pleased to come to Christ. They come to Christ because they want to. Likewise the reprobate do not want to embrace Christ earnestly. They have no desire for Christ whatever and are fleeing from Him. Predestination of the Elect (PE) and of the Reprobate (PR) Orthodox Calvinism PE is positive; PR is negative. PE & PR are asymmetrical. The ultimacy of PE and the Ultimacy of PR are unequal. PR: God passes over the reprobate. Hyper-Calvinism PE is positive; PR is positive. PE & PR are symmetrical. The ultimacy of PE and the Ultimacy of PR are equal. 22 9) When Paul speaks of God s having loved Jacob and hated Esau (Rom. 9:13), this divine hatred is not the same as human hatred. Divine hatred is never malicious, it withholds favor and dispenses justice. No one is treated unjustly. Conclusion: Election is unconditional. No foreseen actions of the elect cause them to be elect or provide the grounds of their election. The conditions for salvation or justification are met by the believer, but they are met because God provides these conditions for them by His sovereign grace. Calvin: Many controvert all the positions which we have laid down, especially the gratuitous election of believers, which however cannot be overthrown. For they commonly imagine that God distinguishes between men according to the merits which He foresees that each individual is to have, giving the adoption of sons to those whom he foreknows will not be unworthy of his grace, and dooming those to destruction whose dispositions he perceives will be prone to mischief and wickedness.
