3 SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2017 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Jesus said to His disciples If you love me you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot accept because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him because he remains with you. I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. The priestly prayer of Jesus, similar to a pep talk or farewell speech, reassures the disciples of Jesus ongoing concern before His imminent departure. The promised Spirit offers life, protection and guidance to us all. How rarely do you treasure the fact that Jesus speaks to the Father on your behalf and promises you the gift of the Spirit when He leaves. That same promise continues today, as we need the Spirit. He continues to watch out for us in our need as He speaks to the Father on our behalf. The advocate is present to us all to guide and guard, to direct and sustain us on our journey of holiness. Jesus tells you that you are loved by all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 8:5-8, Philip preaches to the people of Samaria, who accept his word after witnessing the miracles he performs. Peter and John pray that they will receive the Holy Spirit. Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:15-18 Christians are urged to remain steadfast in their allegiance to Christ, giving evidence always of gentleness and hope. Gospel: John 14:15-21 In His words to the apostles at the Last Supper, Jesus promises to send them a comforter, a Paraclete, the Spirit of Truth, who will be with them always. 4 SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2017 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER THE ROSARY AND FATIMA Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco often said the rosary as they watched over the families sheep, but, (as kids sometimes do!) they used a very quick method. Instead of saying the entire prayer on each bead, they simply said, Our Father and Hail Mary and then moved on to the next bead. However, after the first apparition of Our Lady, they began to pray in earnest St. Padre Pio called the Rosary a weapon for these modern times. It is perhaps fitting, then, that so often when Mary has left her throne and came back to us, she comes wielding her Rosary, imploring us to pray it every day. This was one of her central messages in Fatima. The Rosary is often misunderstood as a form of worshiping Mary. But, in fact, it is a biblical prayer that draws us closer to Christ and teaches us about His life. The Rosary prayers consist of the Apostles Creed, confirming belief in our faith; the Glory Be, praising the Holy Trinity; the Our Father, given to us by Christ Himself; and the Hail Mary, the words coming primarily from the greetings to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel and by Mary s kinswoman, Elizabeth, as recorded in Scripture (Lk 1:28, 42). As we pray, we are encouraged to meditate on the mysteries of Jesus s and Mary s lives in Scripture. Some struggle with the repetitive nature of the Rosary, but this is the source of its strength and power. When we say the Hail Mary repeatedly, our prayers to Mary become like familiar, soothing music that paces us and sets our souls at ease. While many people have a great devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, it seems as though the world is in nearly the same state now as it was when Mary appeared in Fatima. We still need to pray the Rosary, work to convert sinners, and continue to pray for peace. The message of Fatima is needed now more than ever. The 100 th Anniversary is a great reminder that all of us are called to this message of peace and prayer. THE MEMORARE The Memorare is an ancient prayer directed to Mary, asking for her intercession. The word memorare is Latin for remember. This beautiful prayer reminds us that Mary can never refuse one of her children who comes to her with a sincere heart. Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen. CARDINAL S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL We are so close to our goal of $119,000, with pledges of $109,000. Please consider making your donation today. Pledge envelopes are available on the Ushers tables in the lobby. You may also make your gift online at MARY S FLOWERS Christians of the early Church frequently used floral symbolism to honor the Blessed Mother. Mary was associated with this passage from the Song of Songs, I am the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valleys. (2:1) Roses and Lilies became Mary s flowers. A legend from the Second Century says that when Mary s tomb was opened to show Thomas that her body had been assumed into Heaven, it was filled with these flowers. The Rose, emblematic of her purity, glory, and sorrow was her attribute as Queen of Heaven and a symbol of her love for God, and for Christ, her son. Although Roses are beautiful, there is a hidden suffering in their thorns. For Mary, the thorns on the Rose remind us that Our Lord Jesus Christ wore a crown of thorns and gave up His life for all humanity. Mary witnessed this suffering and death first hand at the foot of the cross. The Lily of the Valley was a symbol of the Virgin Mary because of its pure white flowers, sweet smell and innocent, humble appearance. Lily of the Valley are called Our Lady s Tears. It is told that when Mary cried at the cross, her tears turned into this tiny fragrant blossom. The faithful saw Mary s attributes in the herbs and flowers growing around them and named many plants after her. Legends about the flowers developed as people sought to connect them with events from Mary s life. The lowly Violet was associated with humility and became known as Our Lady s Modesty. It was said to have blossomed where Mary said to the Angel Gabriel who had come to tell her she was to bear the Son of God, Behold, I am the handmade of the Lord. Columbine was called Our Lady s Slipper because it was said to have grown where Mary s feet touched the earth when she was on her way to visit Elizabeth. We can honor Mary by recalling the attributes of these flowers and herbs named for her. The flowers can serve as starting points for prayer and meditation about Mary and her life. Here is a list of some common annuals and perennials named after or dedicated to Our Lady: Sweet Alyssum Mary s Flower Marigold Mary s Gold Petunia Our Lady s Praise Sweet Pea Our Lady s Smile Cornflower Our Lady s Crown Pansy Our Lady s Delight Forget-Me-Not Eyes of Mary Morning Glory Our Lady s Mantle English Daisy Mary s Rose Snowdrop Our Lady s Purity Daffodil Mary s Star Bleeding Heart Mary s Heart

5 SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2017 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD THIS THURSDAY, MAY 25 th The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Easter, is the final act of our redemption that Christ began on Good Friday. On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven (Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9-11). The Ascension is one of the chief feasts of the Christian year and dates back at least to the later 4 th Century. It is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus the others being His Baptism, Transfiguration, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. Then-Pope John Paul II stated that Scripture positions the significance of the Ascension in two statements: "Jesus gave instructions, and then Jesus took His place. St. John Paul II emphasized that Jesus had foretold of His Ascension several times in the Gospels, e.g. John 16:10 at the Last Supper: "I go to the Father, and you will see me no more," and John 20:17 after His Resurrection He tells Mary Magdalene: "I have not yet ascended to the Father; go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." The reality of Christ's Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of our belief) of Christianity all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." For the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, a Holy Day of Obligation, we have Masses as follows Wednesday evening Vigil Mass at 5:30 PM, Thursday Masses at 6:45 AM, 8:30 AM, 12:10 PM and 7:30 PM.
