INTERNATIONAL TRAINING AND EQUIPPING MINISTRIES The Institute in the Foundations of Church Leadership Dr. Steve Van Horn THE ROLE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS AND UNITY IN THE GROWTH OF THE CHURCH (Part 1) (I CORINTHIANS 12) Church Growth Lecture 7 INTRODUCTION: Ephesians 4:16 speaks of the proper working of each individual part. The individual parts of the church are the members. In this lecture we will talk about how each part, each member, can have and should play an important role in the church. We will see that each member has been given a special spiritual gift that equips them to minister to other members of the church. I. BACKGROUND A. The Corinthian church had many serious problems that Paul wrote about in 1 Corinthians 1. There was a lack of unity. (1:10 3:23) 2. They were not demonstrating servant heart. (4:1 21) 3. There were moral problems in the church. (5:1 6:20) 4. There was misunderstanding about marriage, divorce, and singleness. (7:1 40) 5. There was confusion about freedom and liberty in Christ. (8:1 11:1) 6. There were questions about the man s role and the woman s role in the church. (11:2 16) 7. There were some who were not taking communion seriously. (11:17 34) 8. There was misunderstanding about, and misuse of, spiritual gifts. (Chapters 12 14) 9. There was confusion about the resurrection of believers. (Chapter 15) 10. There were problems with their stewardship of what God had given them. (16:1 4) B. Spiritual gifts 1. True spiritual gifts are given by God to strengthen and manifest oneness, harmony, and spiritual power in the church. 2. Satan s counterfeit gifts (Matthew 7:22-23) are meant to divide, disrupt, and weaken the church. 3. God s gifts build up. Satan s counterfeit gifts tear down. 4. The Corinthian church, like much of the church today, was seriously effected by the counterfeit gifts, by misunderstanding, and by the misuse of spiritual gifts. 5. Just as the Corinthians had perverted almost everything else, they also perverted the nature, purpose, and use of spiritual gifts. This perversion was the result of their traditional religious practices, when they were involved in pagan religions. II. THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS (12:1-3) A. Spiritual gifts are important, so Paul wants the Corinthians to understand them. (12:1) B. As unbelievers, they had been led away from the truth by idols (false gods). (12:2) NOTE: We must be concerned about being led astray by traditional religions. IFCL, CG Lecture 7 - The Role of Spiritual Gifts and Unity (Pt.1) (rev ) 1

C. Paul gave them two ways to test spiritual gifts. 1. Negative test: No one can be led by God, and curse Jesus. (12:3a) 2. Positive test: No one can honestly say Jesus is Lord unless he is saved and the Holy Spirit lives in him. (This is speaking of someone who is truly making Jesus the Lord of His life.) III. THE SOURCE AND PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS (12:4-7) A. The variety of spiritual gifts ( 4:4) 1. Spiritual gifts are free and include the gift of salvation. 2. Spiritual gift, here (and in 1 Peter 4:10), means the divine equipping for believers to minister in the power of the Holy Spirit. 3. A spiritual gift is not just some natural talent. It is not like being able to build something well, or like playing a musical instrument. Even unbelievers have these natural talents. 4. Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit, and are given only to believers. (12:7). 5. Spiritual gifts are special, supernatural abilities given to all believers that equip them to minister supernaturally to others, especially to each other. a. If those gifts are not being used, or not being used correctly, the work of God will be negatively affected. b. Spiritual gifts in a church function like positions on a soccer team. i. A soccer team could not function as a team if everyone played the same position. The same is true in the church. The church cannot function if everyone is trying to do the same job. ii. God gives His people a variety of gifts just as players on a team play a variety of positions. 6. There are two general varieties of gifts: speaking gifts and serving gifts. (1 Peter 4:11) 7. The New Testament contains several lists of spiritual gifts. Two primary passages are 1 Corinthians 12:8 10, 28, and Romans 12:6 8. B. The variety of ministries (12:5) 1. One person with the spiritual gift of teaching may be especially gifted in teaching young children, another in teaching youth or adults. One evangelist may be able to address large crowds, while another s strength is in one on one witnessing. (These are just examples.) 2. Spiritual gifts are not given to make us look good or give us status, but as tools for ministry. The Lord gives them to His servants so they can serve Him effectively. 3. It is critical to understand that spiritual gifts are not given for self edification. (1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Peter 4:10) C. The variety of effects (12:6) 1. This is the power to use our gift effectively. 2. Just as spiritual gifts are given by God, so they are also empowered by God. IFCL, CG Lecture 7: - The Role of Spiritual Gifts and Unity (Pt.1) (rev ) 2

3. The emphasis here on varieties seems to imply that the Corinthians thought that the more dramatic gifts were the only gifts worth having. a. However, the Holy Spirit gives gifts to all Christians. He gives a variety of gifts, and every gift is as spiritual and important as any other. b. We should not envy anyone because of the gift they have. Every spiritual gift is equally important. D. Spiritual gifts have only one source and purpose. (12:7) 1. They are all given by, and are manifestations of, the Trinity. a. The gifts are given by the Spirit. (12:4) b. The ministries are assigned by the Lord Jesus. (12:5) c. The effects are energized by God, the Father. (12:6) 2. They are also given for the common good, or to benefit everyone in the church, not for the person exercising the gift. (12:7) 3. There are at least four results of people using their spiritual gift in the church. a. Christians receive great blessings by using their own spiritual gift to benefit others, and when others minister to them by using their own spiritual gift. b. When everyone does his part in ministry (using his or her spiritual gift), the church has a dynamic witness with power and effectiveness that it cannot have any other way. c. When each member ministers his gifts, God s leaders become obvious. i. In a church where everyone is ministering, spiritual leadership eventually emerges. ii. God equips His leaders when they are saved. Their leadership grows and becomes evident when they come to have the spiritual and moral qualifications that come from obedience to His Word, d. A church where people faithfully use their spiritual gifts in the Spirit s power, experiences the joy of great unity, love, and fellowship in ways that no amount of human ability, planning, or effort can produce. IV. VARIETIES OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS (12:8-11) A. Spiritual gifts have two major purposes. 1. The general, or common gifts, minister to the church. 2. The special, or sign gifts, are signs to confirm the Word of God. i. Sign gifts were special gifts given to those who were bringing the Word of God to the world in the beginning, and therefore were temporary. ii. The general, or common gifts, are still given to believers today. B. The general or common gifts 1. Speaking gifts include prophecy, knowledge, wisdom, teaching, and exhortation. 2. Serving, or nonspeaking gifts, include leadership, helps, giving, mercy, faith, and discernment. IFCL, CG Lecture 7: - The Role of Spiritual Gifts and Unity (Pt.1) (rev ) 3

3. Sign gifts, given only at the beginning of the church, included miracles and healing. a. The purpose of the temporary sign gifts was to give authority to the message of the apostles, and show that they were speaking and writing the Word of God. When the Word of God was completed at the end of the first century, the sign gifts were no longer needed. b. Paul s message in 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 is to illustrate the variety in the kinds of gifts, and to emphasize the common source of the gifts, each of which is given for the common good (v.7), not for self-edification. C. The list of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians12:8-10) NOTE: Some believe this list is only a list of examples. Others combine the gifts (e.g. teaching and mercy) so that each gift is unique. But these are at least general category of gifts. 1. The gift of wisdom (12:8a; James 3:13, 17) a. The gift of wisdom is the ability to make skillful and practical application of the truths from the Word of God to life situations. b. Communicating wisdom begins with in-depth Bible study. After learning what the Bible says, a person with the gift of wisdom is then able to apply what he or she has learned to life situations. c. Wisdom is also the ability a counselor must have in order to apply God s truth to the questions and problems brought to him or her. 2. The gift of knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:8b; 1 Corinthians 13:2) a. The gift of knowledge refers to understanding the truths of God s Word. b. God gives certain Christians a special ability to study the Bible, and discover the full meaning. c. The gift of knowledge is the extraordinary ability to understand the meaning of God s Word, which is a mystery to others. 3. The gift of faith (1 Corinthians 12:9a) a. The gift of faith is primarily expressed toward God through prayer, appealing to, and trusting God to do more than what He normally does. b. Those with the gift of faith have a special ability to claim the promises of God. c. Faith activates God when it is according to His own plan and will. (James 5:16b 18) 4. The gifts of healing (12:9b) a. Gifts here is plural suggesting that Paul is speaking of different kinds of healing gifts. b. The gifts of healing were the first temporary sign gifts that Paul mentions in this passage. c. These gifts were for Christ (Matthew 8:16 17), the apostles (Matthew 10:1), the seventy (Luke 10:1), and some associates of the apostles such as Philip (Acts 8:5 7). NOTE: In the example in Mark 2:1-10, especially verse 10, Jesus says the healing miracle was to demonstrate that he had authority to forgive sins, which meant He was God. IFCL, CG Lecture 7: - The Role of Spiritual Gifts and Unity (Pt.1) (rev ) 4

d. God still heals directly and miraculously in response to prayer. e. No Christian today has a gift of healing. No one today can heal as Jesus and the apostles did. With a word or touch, they could instantly and totally heal all who came to them. They could also raise people from the dead. f. The gifts of healing were temporary, given to the church for the purpose of giving authority to the apostle s message; that their message was God s Word. i. Paul used the gift sparingly, and only for its intended purpose. ii. It was never used for the single purpose of healing someone. There were always other reasons for it. iii. Paul himself was sick, yet he never healed himself. iv. Epaphroditus had been very sick, and would have died, but God didn t let him die. (Philippians 2:27) v. When Timothy had stomach trouble, and other sicknesses, Paul did not heal him, but rather advised him to drink some wine. (1 Timothy 5:23) vi. Trophimus was left sick at Miletus. (2 Timothy 4:20) g. A Christian today has the right to ask God for healing. God may choose to heal him in order to accomplish some purpose, and to show His glory. But, He is under no obligation to heal anyone. 5. The gift of miracles (12:10a) a. A miracle is an act of God that is opposed to the ordinary laws of nature. b. A miracle can ONLY be explained by God being directly involved. NOTE: God often leads us, helps us, or warns us by working through other Christians, through ordinary circumstances, or through natural laws. Those are supernatural acts of God, but not every supernatural act of God is a miracle. c. The ability to perform miracles was, also, a temporary gift to give authority to what the apostles were teaching and writing. d. Jesus performed miracles, and healed the sick only for the three years of His ministry. e. The apostles and a few other early church leaders performed miracles as signs to confirm the gospel message. f. Paul wrote that the miracles he performed were to demonstrate that he was a true apostle. (2 Corinthians 12:12) g. Miraculous signs were a mark of apostleship, giving authority to the apostles message and work. Miracles proved that their message and work were from the Lord. (Hebrews 2:3-4) h. The gift of miracles (signs) accompanied God s Word as long as He was still revealing His Word. When He stopped revealing new truth, the gift of miracles (sign gifts) stopped. 6. The gift of prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10b) a. Prophecy means to speak forth, to proclaim. b. The assumption that prophecy always involves a prediction was added sometime in the Middle Ages. c. The biblical prophets sometimes spoke new, revealed truth (1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Peter 1:21), and sometimes only repeated what had already been revealed. IFCL, CG Lecture 7: - The Role of Spiritual Gifts and Unity (Pt.1) (rev ) 5

d. A prophet of God is simply one who speaks God s Word. e. The gift of prophecy is the Spirit-empowered ability to proclaim the Word of God effectively. Before we had the Bible, God revealed His message directly to the apostles and prophets. Now he reveals His message through His Word. f. Since the completion of the Bible, prophecy has no longer been the way God communicates His revelation. Now prophecy is simply proclaiming what has already been revealed in the Bible. g. That primary purpose of prophecy is given in the book of Revelation: The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. (Revelation 19:10) 7. The gift of discernment (distinguishing of spirits) (1 Corinthians12:10c) a. The basic meaning of distinguishing is to separate out for examination, and judging in order to determine what is genuine, and what is false. NOTE: Satan is the great deceiver, the father of lies (John 8:44), and ever since the fall in Genesis 3, he and his demons have counterfeited God s message and God s work. b. All Christians should judge carefully what they hear and read, and not believe everything that they hear. c. False teaching can be judged by comparing it with the Bible says. But false spirits can be judged only by the Holy Spirit s gift of discernment. d. Those to whom God has given the gift of discernment have a special ability to recognize lying spirits. e. They should test the spirits who are influencing the speakers to see whether they are from God. (1 John 4:1). NOTE: That gift of discernment may be called the Spirit s gift to check the other gifts, because God uses it to reveal to His church whether or not a manifestation of the other gifts is from Him. 8. The gift of tongues a. Tongues are always a known language in the world. (1 Corinthians 14:10, 11; Acts 2:6-8) b. Tongues, like all gifts, are to benefit everyone else, not the one performing the gift. (1 Corinthians 12:7) c. The Corinthians were using tongues selfishly, to edify themselves only, (1 Corinthians 14:4a) which is wrong. (1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Peter 4:10a) d. If tongues are exercised in the church, there should only be two or three who do it, (1 Corinthians 14:27a), and there must always be an interpreter so that everyone understands and benefits. (1 Corinthians 14:13, 14:27b) e. Tongues are a sign to the unbeliever who is present. (1 Corinthians 14:21-22) NOTE: When these rules are applied, almost all of the modern day use of tongues becomes unbiblical.
