1 2 Heritage Herald Reclaiming Our Christian American Heritage First Prayer in Continental Congress Christian From the Beginning The Influence of Christianity Upon the Rise of America Written by Stephen A. Flick, Ph.D. A couple of years ago, one man took offense at an article published at CHF concerning the influence of Christianity upon America. He had been trained to deny that America could or should be called a "Christian nation." He commented on the article posted on Facebook, saying that he did not believe any nation could truly be called "Christian" because it "could not be baptized." CHF responded by pointing out the fact that there are many things that cannot Continued on 4 New Projects Points to Ponder Looking Ahead See our latest efforts to inform America of the truth concerning its Christian heritage. Contemporary and perennial issues to consider. One of the greatest opportunities to advocate America's Christian heritage is Thanksgiving week. See the details Page 2 Page 2 Page 3

Quotes Responding to the request by a minority to abolish tax-supported chaplains, the Judiciary Committee wrote (March 27, 1854): At the adoption of the Constitution, we believe every State certainly ten of the thirteen provided as regularly for the support of the Church as for the support of the Government: one, Virginia, had the system of tithes. Down to the Revolution, every colony did sustain [the Christian] religion in some form. It was deemed peculiarly proper that the religion of liberty should be upheld by a free people. To be continued (Artistic Project Rendering) Of the several projects the Board of Directors of Christian Heritage Fellowship has encouraged to be undertaken, the most urgent is The Christian Origin of the United States of America. This work will explain the Christian origin of America from the first patents and charters through the establishment of the United States as an independent nation and beyond. If the Christian New Projects Church in America is to confront the growing judicial tyranny, it must realize the formative influence Christianity played in the birth of our nation and must equip pastors to appropriately respond. This work will help Christians appreciate the role their faith has played in the origin of America. In addition to this work, other projects are being planned, including, How to Help Reclaim America, The Truth About the Crusades, The Founding Fathers and the Bible, and more. You may help us with the publication of these materials by supporting CHF through the link provided below: wship.com/supporting-us/ Points to Ponder Contemporary and Perennial Issues to Consider Possible subjects for conversation, further investigation, or subjects for sermons Where does secularism work? The irreligious would have America believe that the nation was founded upon secularism. The facts of American history clearly demonstrate that this is not so, but that America was founded upon Christian morality. Christians have a right to ask secularists, "Where does secularism work?" In his book, Intellectuals, Paul Johnson demonstrates that the heroes of secularism could not govern their own lives. As a political theory, secularism has resulted in seventeen constitutions for France since the godless French Revolution (to America's one) something that is true around the world. Secularism produces lawlessness in men and nations! 2

Christian Living in September Avenues to Advocate and Celebrate Our Faith While each season of the year offers Christians opportunity to celebrate various aspects of their faith, September is replete with reasons to reflect and give thanks. And, though awareness of our Christian heritage in no way should be used to deny us the opportunity to recognize local family or church observances, it should be an opportunity for believers to celebrate their heritage more fully. Our monthly Christian Living articles and calendar are only small windows that allow our readers to catch glimpses into the historical influence of the Church in America and around the world. These sources allow individuals, families, and churches to sprinkle their lives with an appreciation of the positive influence Christianity has exercised upon the world. Perhaps one of the single greatest facts to be realized by the American believer in the month of September is the role that Christianity sustained upon the formation of America from the convening of the First Continental Congress to the beginning of the Constitutional Convention. For nearly a century, secularist have been robbing America of it true Christian origin, but September provides an opportunity for Christians to speak of America's true heritage. As Thanksgiving and Christian Heritage Week approach, it is not too soon for Christian leaders to be planning for ways to observe this occasion. Please see the discussion below for more information. Additional information concerning September may be observed at the following webpages: September Calendar Christian Living in September 3

Continued from page 1 be baptized and yet we called them "Christian," such as the Bible, churches, and a number of other material objects. Undaunted, he referred to the book he had been reading on the subject, but CHF responded by suggesting he purchase a copy of the book by Supreme Court Justice, David Brewer, The United States a Christian Nation (1905). Surprisingly, this man was not a secularist, nor was he irreligious. He claimed to be a Christian, but, like so many who profess the Christian faith, he did not take seriously that portion of the Lord's Prayer that requested that God's "will be done on earth, even as it is in heaven." It Happened in September The month of September is sprinkled with many opportunities for families and the American church to remember the influence that Christianity exercised over the formation of the United States as an independent nation. It was also in early September 1620 that the Pilgrims set sail for America once again after their first attempt the previous month had ended in frustration. It was also in September that the First Congress completed the Bill of Rights and requested President Washington to issue a presidential thanksgiving proclamation something that the Continental Congress had previously practiced on several occasions. Prayer Begins Congress If asked to identify "The Nation's Church," many Americans may point to the Washington National Cathedral, but "The Nation's Church" is not in Washington, D.C, but in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where it is better known as Christ Episcopal Church. It was the church of Betsy Ross, the seamstress of America's first flag, and the church of many other Founding Fathers including George Washington when he was in town. Christ Church is known as "The Nation's Church" because of the important role its pastors played in the American Revolution. Prior to the organization of the United States Congress under the United States Constitution, the American colonies first banned together under the Continental Congress, which began in 1774 and voted itself out of existence prior to the formation of the United States Congress in The Continental Congress existed in three forms, as the First, Second, and Third Continental Congresses. Spoken of collectively, they are simply known as the Continental Congress. The First Continental Congress met from September 5 to October 26, 1774 in Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia. On the first day of Congress, Peyton Randolph was chosen president and Bible scholar, Charles Thomson, was chosen as the secretary. One the second day, September 6, Samuel Adams known as the Father of the American Revolution asserted "he was no bigot [or denominational partisan], and could hear a prayer from any gentleman of piety and virtue, who was at the same time a friend to his country," and then proceeded to nominate Rev. Jacob Duché to open Congress with prayer. Following this suggestion, the Continental Congress offered the following resolution: "Resolved, That the Revd. Mr. Duché be desired to open the Congress tomorrow morning with prayers, at the Carpenter's Hall, at 9 o'clock." Rev. Duche was the Anglican rector or pastor at Christ Church "The Nation's Church" and became Congress' first chaplain. 4

The following morning at 9:00, Rev. Duche appeared in his "full pontifical" or Anglican clerical attire, formally read several prayers, and then read the collect for that day from the Book of Common Prayer (from Psalm 35), and then, according to John Adams in a letter to his wife, "struck out into an extemporary prayer, which filled the bosom of every man present. I must confess," Adams' continued, "I never heard a better prayer, or one so well pronounced.... It has had an excellent effect upon everybody here." The result of this devotional exercise was that some of the delegates wept and earnestly sought the Lord in prayer as well (see front page for artists rendition of the events of this first prayer in Congress). Conclusion Before the first English settler placed a foot in the New World, they received patents and charters from English monarchs, the texts of which were distinctly Christian. Contrary to the claims of secularists and the irreligious, the first English settlers did not come to America dominated by commercial interests, but rather as indicated by King James' first Virginia Charter they came for the sake of "propagating of the Christian Religion to such People, as yet live in Darkness and miserable Ignorance of the true Knowledge and Worship of God." For more than half a century, the Christian heritage of America has been under attack from irreligious sources. While denominational leaders must not encourage pastors to forsake their faithful presentation of the truth of God's Word, they must do more to equip them with the truth to refute the errors concerning the place of Christianity in American and world history. It has taken secularists decades to break America down, and we may reasonably expect that Christian renewal may takes some time to revive the nation, and if Christians are unwilling to sow seed, there can be no harvest! Future generations will judge our response! Looking Ahead: Christian Heritage Week In August of 1992, West Virginia representative, Nick Joe Rahall, placed a request before his colleagues in the House to set aside Thanksgiving week as a time to celebrate the Christian heritage of America. Tragically, Christians throughout America have failed to capitalize on what Congress did in For more than twenty years, this opportunity has lacked wide-scale support from Christians throughout America. In fact, most denominations appear completely unaware of this fact or are entirely complicit toward it. If our youth fail to see the pivotal role Christianity played in the development of America, they will have no desire to be part of a scorned segment of American society. We can do better! Christians must become involved in the opportunity to remind the nation of our Christian heritage, and to help in the effort, Christian Heritage Fellowship has prepared a packet of materials as a resource to advocate the occasion at various levels of observance. The packets includes additional materials such as a legal opinion, brief history of the event, various proclamations suitable as templates, quotations from Founding Fathers, and annotated bibliography concerning some of the most relevant materials to prepare for Christian Heritage Week. For additional information, please see the following article at our website: Congress Celebrates Our Christian Heritage 5
