Pentecost Sunday The Birthday of the Church When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim (Acts of the Apostles: 2). 2 Page 2 Our Lady of Grace Dear parishioners: The Evangelist John gives us the setting for this post-resurrection appearance of Jesus: On the evening of the first day of the week It was Easter Sunday evening. Jesus disciples were assembled in a room where the doors were locked for fear of the Jews. Sometimes, we pray or go to Church out of fear. Since it was Sunday evening, Jesus disciples were assembled out of fear to celebrate the Eucharist it was probably a house-church. The fear was probably caused by their past failures betrayal, denial or worse and by the hostile atmosphere toward the followers of Christ. Jesus greets them, Peace be with you. This was the greeting that Jesus would have shared with them at the Last Supper: Peace is my farewell to you; my peace is my gift to you; and I do not give it to you as the world gives it to you (John 14: 2728). Next, Jesus shows them his hands and his side with wound marks inflicted during the Crucifixion (John 20: 25). He wanted to assure them that he was not a delusory figment of their imagination. In his wounds, He wanted to show them the meaning of sin. Jesus repeats his greeting, Peace to you. Or, is it a greeting? Peace is something that Jesus gives as gift to his disciples as they begin their ministry, namely, the assurance of his presence with them. If they are to bring peace to troubled souls and to a troubled world, they must first possess that peace in their own lives. Peace is that calm in the eye of the storm. What all of us seek most in life is that inner peace. Peace comes from an intimate relationship with Jesus. There is a difference between forgiveness and healing. Jesus followers knew that he forgave them through multiple meetings after the Resurrection. Even though they knew that they were forgiven, they still remembered their past failures. They were in need of a healing of memories. Jesus offers Graduate Brisa Luevano them this healing as they begin their public ministry so that they, in turn, will offer that forgiveness and healing Peace to those who are in need of it..
