The Folly of God A Theology of the Unconditional John D. Caputo This book is a mind-changer. Richard Kearney, Boston College In this radical reading of Paul s famous claim that God stands with the nobodies of the world, Caputo explores the idea that the real interest of theology is not God especially not God as supreme being. Here, God, as the name of what happens when we listen to the unconditional demand for justice, is an event that transforms us. Clayton Crockett, University of Central Arkansas as playful as it is serious, as foolish as it is wise, as theological as it is atheological The Folly of God asks how far into the theology of the cross we are willing to go, and what we are willing to give up along the way. Amy Frykolm, editor at The Christian Century It s not easy to find a guide who knows the rough terrain of [God] questions, but Caputo occupies this zone and will take you with him if you have the curiosity and courage to accept the invitation. Brian D. McLaren, author of We Make the Road by Walking 2016, 148 pages, paperback, $22 ISBN We were taught to believe in God, but Caputo shows that the more important quest is how we think about God. Bernard Brandon Scott, Phillips Theological Seminary God and the Human Future Series Series Editor, David Galston This new series tests the very limits of God questions the meaning of God, the existence of God, the future of God. It takes seriously that such questions are mediated through human language and scientific thought, that even God is historical, and asks: What is the value of religion? Does God have a future? If so, in what changed or altered way?
Gospels, Jesus, and Christian Origins Collected Essays William O. Walker, Jr. Representing a half century of research on the gospels, this collection of essays explores topics such as demythologizing, son of man, and the Synoptic Problem. Includes a critical analysis of ways in which scholars have attempted to recover the historical Jesus. [explores] some of the field s knottiest problems through the eyes of a meticulous craftsman who is, above all, a master teacher. We are amazed by the clarity of Walker s explanations and the honesty with which he discerns what we can and cannot know and what, finally, is important. Wayne Meeks, Yale University Walker s arguments are always impressively presented and remain essential reading for all serious students of Jesus, the gospels and earliest Christianity. Christopher Tuckett, University of Oxford, UK 2016, 368 pages, paperback, $35 ISBN Paul and His Legacy Collected Essays William O. Walker, Jr. Representing three decades of research on the Pauline letters, these essays gives special attention to historical-critical issues in Galatians, 1 & 2 Corinthians, and Romans, along with the often problematic dependence of the book of Acts on the letters of Paul. As informed and informative as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking, fully accessible to the non-specialist general reader, Paul and His Legacy is very highly recommended for personal, seminary, community, and academic library Christian Studies collections. Midwest Book Review A treasure-trove of straight talk on the use and misuse of the Pauline letters. Careful, lucid, clear, insightful, lively, cogent and intelligent, these essays help unscramble the tangle of problems the letters contain. Calvin J Roetzel, University of Minnesota 2015, 336 pages, paperback, $35 ISBN A must have for any graduate student or scholar hoping to engage with the legacy and writings of Paul. Daniel N. Gullotta, Exploring the World of the First Christians and the New Testament blog 4
Ethics in the Last Days of Humanity Ethics in the Last Days of Humanity is not about the science of global warming so much as the absence of a serious ethical and religious response to it. When all existing reality breaks down, ethics can no longer be based on nature or religious law. Cupitt advocates an alternative inspired by the historical Jesus. The question Cupitt addresses, How can we be worldaffirming and ethically active in the face of very large scale disaster? will resonate with many readers. His answer deserves close scrutiny. Michael Zimmerman, The Clergy Letter Project In these apocalyptic days of global collapse Cupitt offers a bold reappraisal of our modes of thought and action, sketching out a new humanitarian eschatology. Catherine Pickstock, Cambridge University... outlines a philosophy that will enable us to be resilient, courageous and ethical , 126 pages, paperback, $19 ISBN John Shuck, Religion for Life Creative Faith Religion as a Way of Worldmaking Very early on Christianity split between two different pathways: one stayed with the teaching of Jesus and the primacy of ethics, the other started with the return of Jesus and, therefore, with supernatural belief. Belief prevailed: ethics is largely viewed as secondary or subservient. The time has come, argues, to give ethics priority in defining and shaping religious life. A forceful and clearly-written call to open a new religious horizon suited to our time. George Pattison, University of Glasgow It s unusual to find a book which satisfies both mind and spirit, but has pulled it off. Creative Faith offers sparking insights about religion and human life. Linda Woodhead, author of Christianity , 160 pages, paperback, $19 ISBN

Using his vibrant Scholars Version translation, Pervo introduces the text of the Acts of John, identifies its sources, investigates early witnesses, and illuminates the motivations of its author. Includes the text, notes, and cross-references. 2015, 112 pages, paperback, $18 ISBN Early Christian Apocrypha, vol , 80 pages, paperback, $18 ISBN Early Christian Apocrypha, vol , 144 pages, paperback, $ , 130 pages, paperback, $ , 144 pages, paperback, $ , 144 pages, paperback, $18 ISBN ISBN ISBN ISBN Early Christian Apocrypha, vol. 1 Early Christian Apocrypha, vol. 2 Early Christian Apocrypha, vol. 3 Early Christian Apocrypha, vol
Acts and Christian Beginnings The Acts Seminar Report Dennis E. Smith & Joseph B. Tyson, editors Acts was long thought to be a first-century document, and its author Luke to be a disciple of Paul thus an eyewitness or acquaintance of eyewitnesses to the earliest generations of Christianity. But the Acts Seminar, a decade-long collaborative project by scholars affiliated with the Westar Institute, upended these standard teachings. The Acts Seminar found that: Acts dates to the early second century The author of Acts used the letters of Paul Jerusalem was not the birthplace of Christianity These and other carefully argued conclusions directly challenge the view of Acts as history and raise a host of new questions, addressed in this final report.... a valuable resource especially for students of the New Testament outside of the scholarly guild, such as upper-division majors in religious studies and history of Christianity, seminary students, and clergy. Review of Biblical Literature 2014, 400 pages, paperback, $29 ISBN The First New Testament Marcion s Scriptural Canon Jason D. BeDuhn History preserves the name of the person responsible for the first New Testament, the circumstances surrounding his work, and even the date he decided to build a textual foundation for his fledgling Christian community. So why do so few people know about him? Jason BeDuhn introduces Marcion, reconstructs his text, and explores his impact on the study of Luke-Acts, the twosource theory, and the Q hypothesis. The most generally accessible, comprehensive, and useful edition of Marcion s scriptures. Without yielding a centimeter of scholarly high ground, BeDuhn writes with considerable ease and sharp clarity.... An undergraduate could read and comprehend this book. Review of Biblical Literature Jason BeDuhn s lucid and authoritative study of Marcion and his concept of Christian textuality offers the best we can know about this figure, certainly since Adolf von Harnack s [1924] classic. Catholic Biblical Quarterly provides a good entry into the sources for Marcion s text The Journal for the Study of the New Testament... an essential contribution to personal and academic Christian Studies collections Midwest Book Review 2014, 440 pages, paperback, $29 ISBN
Rudolf Bultmann A Biography Konrad Hammann Translated by Philip E. Devenish This definitive biography of the life and work of Rudolf Bultmann traces his career in Germany through the tumult of two world wars. Through richly drawn connections between events in Bultmann s life and his theology, Hammann illuminates Bultmann s contributions to biblical historical criticism and the changing role of religion in public life in Europe. Every section of this book is riveting... An exhaustive masterpiece of biographical scholarship, Rudolf Bultmann: A Biography is a strongly recommended contribution to academic library collections. Midwest Book Review A Beginning-Intermediate Grammar of Hellenistic Greek third edition Robert W. Funk Originally published in three volumes in 1973, Robert Funk s classic Beginning- Intermediate Grammar of Hellenistic Greek utilizes the insights of modern linguistics in its presentation of the basic features of ancient Greek grammar. Now redesigned and reformatted for ease of use, this single-volume third edition makes Funk s ground-breaking work available once more. A gold mine of information on postclassical Greek Review of Biblical Literature 2013, 608 pages, paperback, $48 ISBN A clear and intelligent presentation displaying a linguist s understanding without the linguist s jargon. Carl Conrad, Washington University emeritus 8
The Real Paul Recovering His Radical Challenge Bernard Brandon Scott A slow rumbling that has been building up among New Testament scholars for the past twenty years is only now beginning to make its effects felt on a more general public. A new Paul, who is no friend to traditional orthodoxy, is beginning to emerge. He may prove an even more radical challenge to church and society than the historical Jesus. Scott recognizes the role that the historical devaluation of Judaism still plays in the way that Paul is usually interpreted and explicitly resists solutions that fail to counter that legacy. What a welcome read. Mark Nanos, University of Kansas 2015, 256 pages, paperback, $27 ISBN as thoughtful and thought-provoking as it is seminal and iconoclastic. An inherently fascinating read from beginning to end, The Real Paul is highly recommended for seminary and academic library NT studies reference collections in general, and Paulinian studies supplemental reading lists in particular. Midwest Book Review An engaging all-out attack on the Augustinian-Lutheran reading of Paul and his letters. The Real Paul takes Paul s claims seriously Stanley K. Stowers, Brown University The Authentic Letters of Paul A New Reading of Paul s Rhetoric and Meaning Arthur J. Dewey, Roy W. Hoover, Lane C. McGaughy, Daryl D. Schmidt Anyone wanting to defamiliarize an author whose message is easy to take for granted will find here a useful resource. Religious Studies Review 2010, 286 pages, paperback, $27 ISBN In many ways the [Scholars Version translation] offers a satisfying rethinking of how to express concepts in Paul s undisputed letters. I welcome many of these efforts and commend the editors for their careful thought... Review of Biblical Literature
The Gospel of Jesus According to the Jesus Seminar second edition Robert W. Funk, Arthur J. Dewey & the Jesus Seminar For centuries the voice of Jesus has been obscured and his vision skewed even by well-intended gospel writers who transmitted his words to serve their own concerns. The Gospel of Jesus frees Jesus voice from the accretions of time and lets his challenging wisdom stand out as never before. Here the reader has a chance to rub shoulders perhaps for the first time with an historical figure whose words continue to stir imaginations. A thought-provoking book which will delight or threaten and/or test your knowledge of the New Testament. Portland Book Review A small and very striking collection of believable sayings of Jesus and commentaries about them This volume is very useable, individually or in a small group, by the layperson interested in what Jesus might have actually said. Spokane Faith & Values 2014, 130 pages, paperback, $18 ISBN Embracing the Human Jesus A Wisdom Path for Contemporary Christianity David Galston How does one incorporate the historical Jesus into contemporary Christian practice? Virtually all scholars see Jesus as a participant in the Jewish wisdom tradition, says David Galston. And the ancient wisdom of Jesus can be grasped in the contemporary world. Thus it can find life in the thinking and practices of a new church. He offers helpful reflections from a real community attempting to follow the wisdom path of a purely human Jesus. Includes sample liturgy and hymns. A thought-provoking study of the historical Jesus that not only demonstrates a wide acquaintance with the relevant literature but also manifests much original thought. Lloyd Geering, Victoria University of Wellington, NZ 2012, 283 pages, paperback, $24 ISBN
Reimagining God The Faith Journey of a Modern Heretic Lloyd Geering Described by the BBC as the last living heretic, Lloyd Geering has spent much of his life wrestling with God. Of late, however, he finds himself struggling with the absence of God. The rise of nonreligious, secular culture around the world testifies that he is not alone. This book blew me away. Ryan Bell, A Year Without God Reimagining God is surely the key challenge for any still drawn by the stories of or about the man Jesus from Nazareth, in the world after theology, which so many now recognise as the territory we together inhabit. Sofia 2014, 180 pages, paperback, $20 ISBN The Last Western Heretic The Last Western Heretic, a documentary about the life and ideas of Lloyd Geering, was shown on New Zealand TV last weekend. It was excellent extremely well made and great intellectual content. Ken Perrott, Open Parachute 2007, 72 min, DVD, $24 Top Shelf Productions Ltd. NTSC format (North America) Is God Needed in the Kingdom of God? Of all the possible ways to think about God, which concept makes the best sense for our world today? This celebration of the work of radical theologian John D. Caputo invites listeners to consider a new way of thinking about God as weak but potent, God as the great perhaps. 2015, 251 minutes, 4 CD Set, $35 The Problem with God Peter Steinberger Peter Steinberger challenges listeners to set aside as nonsensical the question, Does God exist? He argues that theism, atheism, and agnosticism are all incoherent positions and addresses the implications of his thesis for ethics, the meaning of life, and the limits and aspirations for human knowledge of the universe. 2015, 120 minutes, 2 CD Set, $

Featuring the Scholars Version translation a fresh translation from the original languages into living American English The Complete Gospels Robert J. Miller, editor The Complete Gospels is the first ever collection of the canonical gospels and their extracanonical counterparts, from the first and second centuries, under a single cover. Each chapter comprises an updated translation of the gospel an introduction that sets the text in context and discusses its structure and themes notes to important translation issues and background information cross references It surpasses all other modern English versions in its ability to evoke the distinctive voices of the original writers, and it does it in dead-on American vernacular that s always clear and never clumsy. Miller An essential resource for the analytical study of the gospels, The Complete Gospel Parallels gives those who study the gospels in English a one-volume compendium of synopses not only for the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but also for the Gospels of Thomas and Peter, as well as for a few smaller gospel fragments.
