8 The + World on the Turtle s Back (pg. 36) This is a creation myth Myth is a traditional story usually involving supernatural being or events, that explains how some aspect of human nature or the natural world came to be. Science fiction novels and films often use supernatural and mythic elements in their narratives. (Ex: Star Trek) This is a story of how the Iroquois believed the earth was formed.

18 Puritan Customs and Beliefs: The Puritans were a group of people who criticized (wanted to purify ) the corruption and hierarchy in the Church of England which was the official church in England that everyone automatically belonged to. Puritans believed that the final authority came from the Bible, not from church officials, and therefore, every individual had direct access to the word of God. Some Puritans wanted to completely separate from the Church of England (they were called Separatists). The group of Pilgrims who came on the Mayflower in 1620 were Separatists. 10 years after the Mayflower, a group of Puritans, led by John Winthrop landed in New England and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were still loyal to the Church of England, but believed they could purify the behavior of individuals (purify the Church from within).

21 Think about the appeals that are being used. Persuasive writing is pentacle to the language found in many of the sermons (or speeches). You who gossip about your neighbors your tongues will shrivel even as you speak. End your gossiping ways. Edwards is using vivid, emotional language to persuade his congregation to believe deeply in a vengeful God. You will see how Edwards in trying to show how God will show great anger to those who sin and at any moment, God may send you to hell, which Edwards describes in vivid detail. Think about the PURPOSE, the AUDIENCE, and the CONTEXT for some of the advertisements that you have seen. What made them have such an impact on you?

25 Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God + Edwards uses imagery to paint a horrifying picture of eternal damnation for unsaved souls. Uses graphic words to describe the torment that awaits sinners Imagery of God holding sinners above the fiery pits of Hell Figure of speech to compare abstract concepts of God s wrath and the sinner s evil to common experiences to make his message easier to understand. Metaphors spans over several paragraphs. Ex: the bow of God s wrath being drawn and held over the hearts of sinners. Compares sinners to spiders and serpents, creatures that are despised by humans, just as sinners are despised by God. All of this is to show the congregation how poorly God thinks of them

26 Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Edwards conveys frightening images to induce his congregation into believing they are vulnerable to God s wrath. Continually uses images of pain and eternal damnation Ex: details about what Hell is like and what kind of tortures await sinners frightens to leave old ways and convert. Edwards held his audience captive with his promises of eternal damnation if proper steps were not taken = living in fear of the power of God.

You will have 50 minutes to complete the test. Do not write on the test. Turn in your test and your piece of paper when you have completed the test. When you are done, please sit quietly and continue working on your PURITAN PROJECT.

33 Graduation Project Workshop Day: Make sure everything is hole-punched and placed in your binder. I will be conferencing with EVERYONE today. The goal is that every student will leave class today with their finalized topic and a working thesis statement. Everyone must complete the thesis statement form and turn it in to me prior to leaving. Use today as a day of gathering as much research as possible. Use your time wisely! So, how are you being graded today? 1. Do you have your binder with all of the materials that I have given you concerning the Grad Project? 2. Can you provide evidence of 90 minutes of quality and effective research? 3. Did you complete the thesis form and turn it in?
