1 GOAL LIFE NIGHT OVERVIEW THE DOCTOR A LIFE NIGHT ON JESUS, THE DIVINE PHYSICIAN The goal of The Doctor is to explain that Jesus assumed the consequence of sin, disease and death, through His work on the cross, so that we might be healed. KEY CONCEPTS Jesus is a doctor unlike any other doctor. Most doctors come and go and treat our illness. However, Jesus treats us by assuming the consequence of our sin Himself. The great work of healing and salvation was accomplished by Jesus on the cross. The faithful today can be saved from the sickness of sin by looking to Jesus death on the cross. ABOUT THIS LIFE NIGHT The Life Night begins with a simple, quick, and thoughtprovoking skit on the Divine Physician s methods. The Proclaim dives into the healing and saving work that Jesus accomplished on the cross. The Break is a small group discussion on how Jesus assumes our sin. The Send is a prayerful reflection on the wounds of Christ and how they heal and forgive us. ENVIRONMENT Create a large structure that is a combination of a cross and a caduceus. A caduceus is the international symbol of medicine. Get two large rods, one shorter than the other, and glue or nail them together to make a cross. Crunch and wrap two long sheets of butcher paper around the horizontal rod to make the serpent s body. Use cardboard to make a serpent s head and glue it to the top of the serpent s body. Have the front of the main meeting space set up for the skit. Put the medicine symbol behind the set and bring it up to the front of the stage for the Proclaim and Send. For an alternate Gather, in small groups or in a large group as an upfront game, have the teens take turns guessing the specialities of doctors. Use the following list: Audiologist - Hearing Allergist - Allergy Cardiologist - Heart Cardiac Electrophysiologist - Electrical Activity of Heart Dermatologist - Skin Hematologist - Blood Heptaologist - Liver Immunologist - Immune System Neonatologist - Newborn Infant Nephrologist - Kidney Neurologist - Brain Oncologist - Cancer Psychologist - Mental Health Rheumatologist - Musculoskeletal and Autoimmune Radiologist - X-rays Pulmonologist - Lung Peccatumologist - Sin Doctor Transition to the Proclaim by explaining that Jesus is the doctor who heals us by assuming the consequence of sin, death, and giving up His life on the cross. For a Gather for a small church, have the teens practice and put on the skit themselves. Then, when the parents come to pick them up, have them perform it for their parents. For an alternate Send, pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet as a large group or in small groups. HISPANIC INCULTURATION By Stephanie Espinoza The title of Divine Physician was close to the heart of St. Rose of Lima. Saint Rose was born in Peru during the sixteenth century. She felt strongly called to unite prayer and work in order to serve the poor, oppressed, indigenous populations, and African slaves who were ill, since they were largely ignored by the doctors of Peru. She was quite sickly herself, and used the knowledge she acquired from her numerous ailments to treat the sick in a room of her parents home as a Third Order Dominican. There are countless recountings of St. Rose asking her Doctorcito, or Little Doctor, to be with her patients in their suffering. It is said that Jesus name never left her lips as she tirelessly worked to care for her patients. Through prayerful intercession, St. Rose witnessed many miracles of healing, even for the most ill, and she attributed them to Christ the Healer. Even today in Lima, many turn to el Doctorcito de Rosa, or Rose s Little Doctor, in prayer to obtain a miracle for their loved ones who are in need of healing. 3 GATHER LIFE NIGHT: THE DOCTOR Welcome and Opening Prayer (10 min) Gather the teens into the meeting space, welcome them, and open in prayer. Invite up any teens that are at the Life Night for the first time. If there are no new teens, randomly select two to three returning teens. Ask them to introduce themselves by saying their name and answering the following questions: Do you like going to the doctor? Why or why not? Have the group welcome them with applause or another form of affirmation. Skit: The Doctor (10 min) While the teens remain seated, quickly transition into the skit. Be sure to cast, practice, and memorize the skit in advance. BREAK Small Group Discussion (20 min) Divide the teens into small groups with a Core Member to lead each group. Begin in prayer. Use the following questions to lead a small group discussion: What was different about the three doctors in the skit? What stood out to you from the skit? Has anyone ever assumed your responsibility? Has anyone ever done your part of the group project, or covered for your shift at work, or picked someone up from the airport when you were supposed to? Would you share this story? To follow up ask, how did it feel when someone assumed your responsibility? Have you ever assumed somebody else s responsibility or covered for someone? What s the story? How does Jesus cover for us? The story of Jesus and His death on the cross can be familiar. What was new to you this time you heard it? SEND Healing from the Wounds of Christ (20 min) Instruct the teens to spread out throughout the main meeting space and find a quiet, comfortable spot where the they can pray. Dim the lights. Project Rembrandt s Christ on the Cross. Play Gregorian chant. See media suggestions. Invite the teens to close their eyes or look at the image projected. 4 KEY TERMS THE DOCTOR PROCLAIM OUTLINE Salvation: The forgiveness of sins and restoration of friendship with God, which can be done by God alone. Cross: The instrument of execution on which Jesus Christ died. TEACHING POINTS A DOCTOR LIKE NONE OTHER Most doctors come and go and treat our illnesses. God told Adam and Eve that if they ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they were surely doomed to die. Project and read Genesis 2:15-17, followed by Romans 6:23. God sent His Son to take on the consequence of our sin so that all His children might live. Project and read 2 Corinthians 5:21. The great work of salvation was accomplished by Jesus on the cross. Project Rembrandt s Christ on the Cross. THE CROSS Project and read John 19: Jesus death on the cross healed the wound of sin once and for all. However, this wasn t the first time in the history of God s people that we were healed and saved by looking at a cross. THE BRONZE SERPENT When God s people were wandering in the desert in search of the Promised Land, they suffered greatly. They were hungry, thirsty, and walking aimlessly through a hot and barren desert. For a time, it seemed as though they had lost His favor. Then, another pestilence hit. Project and read Numbers 21:4-9. God s people were plagued by poisonous serpents. Those who were bit, died. Moses interceded for God s people and a remedy was prescribed. Project and read Numbers 21:8. Moses did as he was told, and God s people were saved from death. Project and read Numbers 21:9. Jesus later explains that just as God s people were healed of their sickness by looking at the serpent on the pole, the faithful today can be saved from the sickness of sin by looking to Jesus death on the cross. Project and read John 3: This happens concretely at Mass. During the entrance processional, the cross is held high for all to see, and the faithful are called to remember that through Jesus death we, too, are healed. WITNESS ON FORGIVENESS AND HEALING Share a testimony or have a Core Member or teen leader share a testimony about receiving healing and forgiveness through Jesus.
