4 Next Step 2 Some Things Never Change Heb. 13:8 Richard Foster: Money, Sex, and Power: The demon in money is greed; the demon in sex is lust; the demon in power is pride. These really are not matters we can be neutral about in hopes that they will disappear - if we ignore them, we will be dominated by them. When Jesus is our anchor and our compass, we will have strong marriages, exercise brotherly love and hospitality, and live out a strong moral system regarding purity, money, and leadership. EXTRA INSIGHTS Sex gets complicated and distorted when sexual expression is separated from the context of marriage. The world s refusal to accept that simple fact explains the headstrong determination of sinners to have everything their own way and to define their own existence apart from the Creator and His intention. The biblical writers address human sexuality honestly. Paul acknowledged the reality of sexual passions (1 Cor 7:9) and admonished those who have not been given the gift of celibacy to marry, rather than to allow their passions to turn into sinful lust. The reality of sexual brokenness is also addressed. The pain and shame of adultery, for example, are demonstrated in the account of David s sin with Bathsheba. Paul s horror in learning of sexual sin among the Corinthians occasioned some of his clearest teachings on sexuality and holiness. At the same time, the Bible points to salvation and the atoning work of Christ as the ground of our sexual healing and the promise of forgiveness. As Paul reminded the Corinthian Christians, such were some of you, listing the sexually immoral, adulterers, and homosexuals (1 Cor 6:9-11). The tense of the verb is critically important in this text, for the such were some of you serves to underline that Christians cannot continue in such sins. The biblical writers affirm sexuality as a part of our existence. As human beings we are sexual creatures, and as sexual creatures we are called to honor God with our bodies. Within the context of the marital covenant, the husband and wife are free to express love for each other, experience pleasure, and join in the procreative act of sexual union. This is pleasing to God, and is not to be a source of shame. Also read: From RE: Hebrews 13:4 There is so much about the historical setting and recipients of Hebrews that is uncertain. fornicators The term in the OT means sexual relations between two unmarried people, but in the NT it has the wider connotation of sexual immorality of any kind. We get the English word pornography from this Greek term. adulterers This refers to sexual relations between people, one or both of whom are married to other people. Sexual sins were a major concern of the early church because of the rampant immorality and worship practices of pagan culture (cf. Gal. 5:19-21). God will judge God s judgment of improper human sexuality can be seen in Rom. 1:24-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 4:19; Col. 3:5; Rev. 21:8; 22:15. However, there are other passages like I Cor. 5:5 and I Tim. 1:9-11, which relate to believers who commit these immoral acts. The early church had to face immorality in the lives of believers and try to draw some guidelines. 1. They need to repent 2. Other believers are to help them (cf. Gal. 6:1; James 5:16,19-20) 3. Believers are not to be best friends with immoral believers (cf. I Cor. 5:9-13).

7 More Opportunities at New Cov Silent Auction for Art During our services on Hebrews 11, Kevin Johnson produced two paintings to reflect the message entitled Wandered the Desert and Home in the Promised Land. They represent the highs and lows of faith, and the fact that God is present in the midst of whatever we go through. On June 24, 2 prints of each will be available for silent auction bidding.
